Perhaps a few single stabs would be a good bet for the first few comps. My trouble is not pars or birdies, it's the crazy 4-overs. (I had four pars and two birdies in 9 holes this afternoon, but I also had a 9 on a 4 )
I usually have one or two brain-fades per round. So at least in single stabs, if I send a ball or two OOB I can just wipe the hole, move on and not piss off my playing partners.

If you play like that, Henno, you'll make a lot of friends very quickly winning 4BBBs

some of the old blokes playing off 20+ at my club are the best fun by a mile, even if they do routinely do me out of my cash in the side bets!

I played 18 chasing the comp today.
Shot 101 with an 11 on the 18th (yes, an 11) and two other quads. No birdies, a string of pars (stangely all on par 4s). Par 5s and par 3s were my nemesis - only one par on a par 3, no pars or better on the 5s.
Needless to say, I didn't head to the ballot for tomorrow's comp. I think I'll get a few more rounds under my belt, eliminate those quads and at least get to low-mid 90's before jumping in and making a fool of myself.

I'd just get in there and play and not worry about the quads.
Have you signed up for the Champs yet?

Just get in there and join the comp. How else are you supposed to burgle the old farts at the club if you start with too low a handicap.

Henno, I hope you put that card in for your handicap.
In the handicap calculations, those 'sundries' will probably be converted to 'doubles', so you've really played to around 20-22 over par (not 29-30).
btw. If you had that round in a stableford comp, off a handicap of say 24-25, you probably been in the top 10% of the field. In a par comp, you'd possibly win it, as a par (sometimes bogey) will get you maximum points for that hole, for your handicap. (Birdies are a waste for C-graders in a par comp.)
Don't worry about the 'sundries' in comp. rounds, provided they were scored quickly, and didn't unduely delay play.
Once you play in a stableford or par comp, you would be picking up after 5/6/7 strokes, depending on your handicap. (Actually, you could even be picking up after 4, if you only got one stroke on a par 3, and it is a par comp.)
Get out there and enjoy.

Nope. My playing partner did not have an AGU.

Just did a quick count-back, and it would have been 22.

I know where you're coming from there henno. One of my recent rounds was a 102 that converted back to 18 after I adjusted all the blow-outs.
If I'm ever in Sydney I'll let you know and we can go burgle somebody's 4BBB.

Welcome to the world of club golf - warts and all. From reading your posts there is no doubt you will fit in at any club. You seem like a very nice young man. Your Mum would be proud of ya.
Don't worry what you may think that your playing partners think. Most golfers don't care what you are doing as long as you don't upset their game. I once broke my handicap playing with a women off 45 who shot 100 - on the front nine!!! ( I kid you not - I added her card up and it was exactly 100!!!)

When we chucked the balls up today for the side bets I ended up with old Cecil. He plays off 32, can't make the carries on 2, 12 or 16 and needs to swap into a cart at the turn as he gets a bit tired. He's 80 years old but is no chance of ever shooting his age.
He is a delight to play with.
Chop away - we play golf with people not just their golf game.

Went & played with 3 great blokes this arvo, all casual & easy going. They needed to be!
I had a bit of a shocker, but I still enjoyed my time on the course with them.
Shot 111.
Nerves really got the best of me over the first 4 holes, 3 balls on the beach & 1 out of bounds.
Only hit one straight drive all day, it was on a long Par 3 & it rolled off the back.
How does the song go....

Henno If you are like the majority of players you will find you will improve faster in a competition setting. most guys seem to concentrate better when they are playing comps.
Hey Dazza, That,s the first one out of the way. Keep trying mate. It,s great fun when you start winning things. It will happen Just give it time.

Get out there and have some fun, we all have to start somewhere with a handicap and golf is not just about hitting the ball in the hole as quickly as you can, otherwise we would never play in four balls. With your humor on this forum you'll be a riot for any group and thats half the fun of a comp day any way.
