Gotta say DC, when I was a bit younger it was the bus drivers who looked like they could give you a floggin' who you were wary of and generally behaved for. And you look like you can throw one... With good money on offer it wouldn't be a bad gig. And you could work around comp days. The more I think about it the more appealing it sounds...

DC, i know a few blokes who got the flick and they turned to security work. they reckon its a doddle and the pay is very very good (for what you do).

One bloke was getting $25 an hour for sitting in a control room all night watching video cameras, and he took his laptop with him and watched DVD's.

Cost about $800 to get the license, and is probably a handy thing to have for getting casual work on the side, and suits a golfer.

As far as danger goes, its all non confrontational now (mostly), you actually aint expected to biff anyone anymore

Criticism doesn't bother me, as it means I am doing something and people are watching.

I agree with Mark that there are 'cooshy' security jobs, but you'd have to work in some funny places to get there.

I was doing some work in Perth, and we wound up in the basement of one of our managed buildings (the "QV1" building on St Georges Tce). We ended up spying on all sorts of things all around the building, including the cops who were doing a bust on a car they had pulled over with an unmarked patrol. Basically they had about a dozen plasma's looking in all sorts of directions, with remote controls to scan the grounds, an internet connection, as as Mark said, if you wanted to watch DVD's all night there would be very little to stop you (just hope that someone doesn't smashing the place up when you're not watching).

Having said that, it was 2:30am and you would be working crap shifts, even in you were in a good location.

I just survived a review a couple of weeks ago, and plenty have been given a redundancy from my project now. I have informally been told that I'll be dumped in June. I was hoping to survive until May next year so they would have to pay out my accrued long service leave.

Get a job with the government, you'd be a shoe in for a job with DMO.

my work "restructured" approx 100 people (8%) out of their jobs last week. My business unit was cut in half two years ago, so things are already pretty stretched. Who knows what will happen. Are Qantas still looking for mechanics?

Yeah, a trade certificate in Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (either Mechanical or Avionic) for an AME jobs. Or a CASA Group 21/22 type licence for LAME jobs.
