Vale Rod Marsh.
Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.
Renowned for coming second in the infamous Boonie Ashes trip. Had 49 beers and apparently Boonie stole the other three. Apparently Boonie was sh*t scared of flying so Rod pushed him to start drinking.
I sat next to Glen (Greg, sorry) Ritchie on the way to the Gold Coast one year; said it was 100% true that Boonie had 52 and Rod was not far behind him with 49.
Could drink most people under the table. Did well IMO to get to 74 considering

They would have been different trips. Marsh retired before Boon was in the team. He also retired before I was born but as a cricket fan I was sad to hear the news this morning 😞
I wouldnt trust a word Glen Ritchie says anyway.
Here is the story from the original record holder;

Went to an 'Underam' lunch today that has been put off half a dozen times.
Plenty of Rod Marsh drinking and other stories from the Chappells, all three and Thommo. Due to the rain Dougie had a golf day called off so he turned up as well.
Who the hell is Glen Ritchie?

Everything I said was 100% what I was told. Statutory Declaration if required.
Are you sure Rod didn’t travel with the team as an assistant. He had the academy going at that point and probably was mentoring the youngsters

Greg, sorry.

Took it on face value, it was the morning and Greg was drinking. Perhaps it was separate trips but the stealing beers part honestly was what he told me.
He was carrying a Srixon carry on bag. Memory is vague but I remember him saying his wife is a golf instructor and they own a driving range.

That is correct. The have or had the range out back of Gold Coast airport. Ritchie wasnt in the 1989 team when Boon got legless. Great Story teller, heard him at a function. Said he he faced up to Holding when he was young and was so scared he deliberately got out after after something like four balls for a duck, when i looked up the test scorecard, didnt match his story at all. Still funnny though.
Shane Warne... hope these things don't come in threes
