Shame to see Turps has gone. Not a total surprise I heard he was pretty sick on Hinch's program a few weeks back.
I loved tham show he did from Petersham RSL on the ABC in the 90s.
So sad, he was also Olivia Newton-John's first serious boyfriend.
Ronny's Golflink
I had a 'run in' with Turps about 15 years ago. He was doing a shopping centre promotion in North Sydney, that involved a putting mat and a couple of dollars for 4 balls, to win prizes. It was around 2pm, I sunk three out of four, and looked for my consolation prize. He said 'Only the first person to sink three got the prize.'
'That's a bit unfair. Okay, what am I playing for then?'
'Either 4 out of 4 or with the long putter.'
So I gave him another couple of dollars, begrudgingly gave the long putter a go, sunk one and got the kebab lunch voucher.
Six months later, they repeated the promotion and I made sure I was there at 11am. 'Here's $15. Give me five goes.' and his eyes sparkled, as he thought it could be a good day.
I was the first to sink '2 out of 4', then '3 out of 4', then with the long putter. Turps went back to being the abrupt old TV discard, like he was six months ago.
RIP Ian. Thanks for the story.
You don't get me. I'm part of the Union.
Apparently he used to fill his golf bag with stubbies when playing at 6am at Cromer GC. Major piss head.
Forum needs more banter.

Golf is, in part, a game; but only in part. It is also in part a religion, a fever, a vice, a mirage, a frenzy, a fear, an abscess, a joy, a thrill, a pest, a disease, an uplift, a brooding, a melancholy, a dream of yesterday and a hope for tomorrow. - New York Tribune, 1916.
