If he successfully defended the civil suit there’s probably next to no chance he would have recovered costs. At its most basic it was likely a smart financial decision.

Well thats the interesting thing. I doubt he ever intended to defend the civil suit, I think he voluntarily opened that opportunity to settle with the girl in a way that causes him the least damage. He made the public statement "apology/admission" immediately after the trial was dismissed not as part of the civil settlement.
