Because you can doesn't mean you should.

Their right to use the road should be dependent on them not impacting on everyone else's ability to use the road in accordance with their rights.

According to the law I have the right to stand at the top of an escalator right at the spot where everyone gets on or off.

In that case trucks should **** off and get off the road too. They hold traffic up AND destroy the road underneath them.

I am not sure if you are a reasonable bloke fishing for a bite, a genuine cyclist hater or a full on ****-head but the attitude you have shown in this thread is why my wife checks find my Iphone every 20 minutes while I am out riding to make sure the dot is still moving...the law says that cyclists are allowed to ride on the road and in a lot of instances claim the lane.

Just because you or anyone else does not agree does not mean you can just chose to ignore the law and say the people following the law should do otherwise.

I don't agree with a lot of the speed limits around, does not mean I can drive 20kmh faster because that is what the law should say.

All that said I do agree with you in the regard that ALL road users should be conscious of their impact on others. But that goes for life in general.

You keep saying cyclists need to get off the road even though legally they have the right to be there and you seem to think because that is your opinion it should over ride the law.

Vehicles going under speed limits...caravans do it all the time, L platers are legislated to do it, and there are a couple of roads I ride on where I am constantly held up by cars...being held up is part of being on the road.

As far as anger issues...this is about the only topic that gets me pissed at all...so well done.

The cyclist at the back wasn't even bothering to pedal, since they could just roll down the hill. I could have safely passed the cyclists giving them their one metre space (except the fact that they were weaving over the whole road since they had the vehicle putting the block on), but overtaking the vehicle was too hard on this road. Cyclists, in general, give me the shits.

That's clearly the support car driver's fault, and I've been both a cyclist and the support vehicle driver in those exact circumstances.

As a cyclist, I would shout myself hoarse at the other riders to be single file for their own safety (and ironically it is the law). I would hear the feeble excuses about 'being protected by the support vehicle', or it is a country road. Amazingly, they wouldn't do it in the months of training rides, but logic goes out the window for 'the big event'.

As a support driver, the idea of the 'Cyclists Ahead' banner on the back to the large furniture trailer is to warn the following drivers and not to block their vision. Sit well back from the riders, and let the car driver determine how they get past the cyclists. This also gives a buffer zone for the situation of anger/drink/drug/selfish drivers from gunning it past the support vehicle, only to be confronted by 20 cyclists obliviously meandering across the road and absolutely nowhere to pull back in. (When we have inquired about an event permit, the guidelines came back requiring escort vehicles 300m behind the last rider.)

I was involved for 14 years with that group and have too many stories, including 'Dickhead Dave', who likes to ride on the Monaro Highway a metre right from the white side-line (where there is enough bitumen to the left), so he 'can be more visible to the road users'.

I'm glad I've play golf for the last 10 years.

I'm with you on the lighting..... I must admit a lot of my cycling gear is dark. But even in the middle of the day I ride with rear and front flashing, If it's even remotely dark I have one flashing on my helmet too (and the new Bolle helmets have a light built into the helmets, can't believe it's taken this long for someone to do that) and I also have a little flasher on my rear seat stay as well. Can't have too many lights. But I would say I am one of the rare ones who do this that I see out. And I think many prefer the 'clean' look of their bikes without the lights so when they 'think' they can push it a bit and go out without them they'll do it.

Me, I prefer to not get hit.

I agree 100% on this. When riding at night I am lit up as bright as possible and I do not do any turns, lane changes etc when cars are around. I stay straight or if needed I get off the side of the road as I know how hard it is to see signals like that in the dark.

Unfortunately some cyclists think they are too cool for lights on the their bikes. Also without wanting to sound elitist a lot of the night riders around here are not people who are passionate about cycling at all, they are riding to get from A to B and a lot of the time seem to not care about rules etc at all.

Not good that these guys got run over, but why are they riding 2 abreast along a busy stretch of road when there is a cycle lane there??

I've driven along there many times and get held up by groups of cyclist doing 40 in a 70-80 zone.
