I need a program to do up some 2D drawings to scale for potential house renovations. Any recommendations of free apps that could do this on the Mac?

I looked hard for something like this for some simple technical drawings at work. Couldnt find anything that didnt seem to be crap. We ended up using Libre Office i think.

Google Sketchup should be worth a look.

I tried using Google Sketchup at work last year and didn't find it very easy to use for what I was trying to do then. I might have another look.

Can't really help you as far as functionality goes, but I know of someone who needed to do detailed electrical schematics who tried Sketchup and ended up loving it & highly recommending it.

I ended up using Dia at work for connectivity diagrams. It's similar to Visio.

Gents, I've been thinking about getting the high spec 27" inch iMac, with the 3.4 GHz quad core i5 processor, 16GB ram, but I'm undecided about the hard drive, I've been considering either a 1TB fusion drive or spending a bit more and getting 512GB flash storage. The computer will be used mainly for internet, email, and some photo editing.

Has anyone had any experience with either drive?

What is the preferred antivirus software I should use on it?

I have a 27" 3.4GHz i7 w/ 16GB of RAM. I went with the dual drives (256GB SSD for the OS for quicker startup, and 1TB SATA for bulk storage). The fusion drive wasn't available at the time, from memory.

While there is antivirus available for the Mac, most people don't bother.

My limited understanding of the fusion drives is that the OS runs on Flash and the storage is normal ~7500rpm HDD storage, so I reckon the 1TB Fusion is the way to go. Best of both worlds, high speed, double the storage, save some money.
We've got one iMac with Fusion drive for work but haven't deployed it yet, I'll be interested to have a play with it and see what the speed is like compared to the flash storage MacBook Pros and Airs I'm familiar with.

Sophos do a free antivirus. It's more an added precaution than an absolute necessity like Windows, but better safe than complacent.

Cheers Guys, sounds like the fusion drive is the way to go for me. Is the 3.5Ghz i7, worth the upgrade from the 3.4 Ghz for my needs?

The i7 is an extra $250.

Unless you're doing super-intensive stuff that uses all of the systems resources (e.g. editing/ rendering full HD video in Final Cut Pro), I doubt you'd notice the difference in performance between the two.

Gents,I finish uni at the end of next semester, which means I'll most likely bin my cheapie laptop which has served me well.Given I am not looking at doing anything much academically for a while, I'm looking at scaling back to an iPad only. All I'll really be using it for will be browsing, movies, music and photos. Has anyone set up an iPad to connect to an external wireless HDD? If so, what, and how has it gone?Cheers,Tim

you are gunna have to get a HDD that throws out iTunes sharing, unless its jail broken and you are using XBMC/Kodi then its a no brainer.

Spotify having a sook about apple making things difficult for a competitor is a bit much though.

How Apple has avoided Antitrust Prosecution in the US has me totally beat. The Right to Repair movement is right up their ribs at present. Apple are down right dishonest in many of their business practices. And the numpty Appleoids just keep drinking the juice.

    Just ask Louis;
