Well, I finally took the plunge...

I've been toying with the idea of going for surgery to get rid of the spare tyres I have...I have made my appointment with the specialist and now just need to work with him on whether I will go the Gastric Band or the Tube...Daly got the Band and the results speak for themselves, a friend of mine got the tube and he has lost a gazillion kg's....I think I am leaning towards the tube but really need to discuss this with my specialist....guess I'll keep updating as I go...

When looking at the long term health impact how does surgery compare with natural weight loss (eating healthy food and exercising)?

I hope it turns out ok, mate. I'd be interested in your thoughts on Peter's comment.

Yeah Pete, good question. The long term health outlook is very good, generally you are looking at losing 50 to 80% of excess weight using either a lap band or a tube. To be honest I have tried natural diets and it just doesn't work for me, I need a helping hand...this is not my first attempt at losing weight but I will make damned sure it will be my last. A big part of the process is eating healthy and exercising, this is something I just have to do and I believe the surgery will greatly assist me in this process (the surgery will make me feel full after a very small amount of food, it is tried and tested and it works)....to be honest if I don't do anything I really doubt I'd see 50 (I am 37 now).

Thanks for the posts of support...I hope to have a John Daly result .....and I promise, no photos

Go for it, I had it done 6 weeks ago and have already lost 9.5 kgs. It has other positives also. If you have diabetes it will eventually bring that under control, if sleep apnea is a problem that will be brought under control and not to mention blood pressure, and less weight on your joints i.e. knees and hips especially. The first month is very tough to work through because you are on a liquid diet anything that you can't drink through a straw is off limits.
Whatever decision you make good luck.

Good luck with it all mate. It sounds like you're approaching this with the right attitude. If anyone tries to get a photo give their camera the Daly toss in the direction of the nearest tree!

Good luck with it. Anything that can help make the weight loss easier has just got to be good.

Yeah good luck mate, it would be good to see some before and after pictures, might put things in perspective for other potential candidates.

there's always biggest loser too, but that's probably more invasive and out there than lap band surgery. all the best for it live4.

    Update time...

I had my first consultation with my doctor today and we decided that the sleeve would be a better option than the band, basically they remove 75% of the stomach and put a sleeve in that almost makes it a tube...still acts like a stomach, just much smaller. Removes the hunger urges. Usually it takes months to get into for the surgery, I am going in on May 4...a lady had to cancel and I happened to be in the right place at the right time. Cool

Now I am on OPTIFAST for the 2.5 weeks prior to surgery, the objective is to make the liver smaller but an obvious side-effect is weight-loss....

    So, the journey begins
