Quest to break 80

Rate this Entry
After posting the break 80 link and receiving some good advice, I am going to cronicle my quest to break 80. My best round to date has been 80 at Wynnum. I am overcoming some injuries, bone on bone in the right hip and various damaged joints.

At this stage, I can not do the 3 hours a week thing. So I have to do it another way. Suggestions always welcome.

Advice from Vegas - look to hit more GIR. If you have no putts for birdie it is hard to break 80. This seems like good advice.

Marto - Has recomended using a GPS to get a better idea of my distances. I will need to find time to go to the practice fairway at Reddy to do this, but I am paying more attention when I am playing a round.

I am also going back to the instructions books etc that have helped me previously. These include Harvey Penick's stuff, Mike Mave's e-Book, Gerry Hogan's book, 5 Lessons, the vids on SITD site and Virge's posts.

Quest step 1 - Reread the e-Book from Secret in the Dirt.
Reading Mr Mave's story reminded me of a number of things in the old WRX thread that had worked for me. The main one being sure we have a solid and stable base (the pre-torque move he talks about) that enables you to swing from the earth. Also reminded to grip the club strongly, but not have tension in the forearms. I think Martinez did some figure of 8 swinging of a club that helped me picture this. I know that I have a tendancy to tense up at the wrong time.

So going into my first round I took these ideas, and a reminder from Mr Penick to 'Take Dead Aim'.
