Today's lesson: Always show up early and warm up.
Clattered out of the house with seconds to spare for a hit on Friday morning with the club's vice president. Murphy's law was in full effect as I found myself stuck behind a guy with a kayak on his roof who sat on 60k-80km/h all the way - even in the 100 zones.
Late by five minutes, so I forewent the usual warm-up swings and confirmation of my woeful short game on the practice green and went straight to the first tee and topped one 40m on a 45 degree angle to the left, then chopped my way to a quadruple bogey 8. I think my partner was considering faking an illness, but fortunately I warmed up and parred the next 3 holes, all greens in regulation. I told him that was a perfect summation of my game.
Highlight of the day was a par on a short par 4 that went like this:
- Perfect drive to within 60m
- Duffed pitch
- Duffed chip
- Putt from 20m off the green due to fear of third consecutive duff - in the hole!
Finished with a 92 including at least 5, maybe even 10 duffed chips. Didn't three-putt once, which is an event of Earth-shattering proportions in my golfing world. Driver is starting to get wayward, so I'm sure that when I sort out my chipping I will start missing fairways.
Handicap looks like coming out somewhere around 18. Happy days!
