Second Handicap Round

Today's lesson: Always show up early and warm up.

Clattered out of the house with seconds to spare for a hit on Friday morning with the club's vice president. Murphy's law was in full effect as I found myself stuck behind a guy with a kayak on his roof who sat on 60k-80km/h all the way - even in the 100 zones.

Late by five minutes, so I forewent the usual warm-up swings and confirmation of my woeful short game on the practice green and went straight to the first tee and topped one 40m on a 45 degree angle to the left, then chopped my way to a quadruple bogey 8. I think my partner was considering faking an illness, but fortunately I warmed up and parred the next 3 holes, all greens in regulation. I told him that was a perfect summation of my game.

Highlight of the day was a par on a short par 4 that went like this:

- Perfect drive to within 60m
- Duffed pitch
- Duffed chip
- Putt from 20m off the green due to fear of third consecutive duff - in the hole!

Finished with a 92 including at least 5, maybe even 10 duffed chips. Didn't three-putt once, which is an event of Earth-shattering proportions in my golfing world. Driver is starting to get wayward, so I'm sure that when I sort out my chipping I will start missing fairways.

Handicap looks like coming out somewhere around 18. Happy days!

What course are you playing at?

Queenscliff. I'm blaming the sandy lies for all my duffed chips.

I was a member there for 3 years when I was a junior. They where the best club for juniors as they did alot for them. Robin Holms was the junior coordinater back then, and funny thing is, is that here husband was the captian of the club and his name was John Holms.

True that was his name, he is a copper.

John Holms? lol. Poor bugger. As a policeman he probably would have had to walk into pubs wearing that on a name tag too.

Not sure if the junior stuff is still running, but I hope they are - Queenscliff are pretty keen to get new members in, so the junior route should be one they are looking at. Somebody was telling me that they have an 'OzKick' style golf skills program that runs at Ocean Grove for 8-12 year olds, but I don't know the full details or whether or not that runs elsewhere.
