  1. Second Handicap Round

Today's lesson: Always show up early and warm up.

Clattered out of the house with seconds to spare for a hit on Friday morning with the club's vice president. Murphy's law was in full effect as I found myself stuck behind a guy with a kayak on his roof who sat on 60k-80km/h all the way - even in the 100 zones.

Late by five minutes, so I forewent the usual warm-up swings and confirmation of my woeful short game on the practice green and went straight to the first tee and ...

  2. First Handicap Round -

Playing to 20 - as long as we're not playing stroke!

Interesting day for the first round. 97 off the stick and should have done a whole lot better. Plenty of rust evident from months out of the game, but I managed to scrape along well on the back of some consistent form with the driver until I had a brain fart on the 12th and blew things out considerably. 4. Dead set chopper, or half decent golfer who never played enough?

I've always wondered if my chopper-ness was the by-product of a prodigous talent left to go to waste through lack of regular golf and the demands of elite bush cricket, or if I was just crap at the game and my only saving grace was that at least I had an excuse for not improving.

Now I'm going to find out for sure.

Three rounds to get a handicap, and hopes of further comp golf as the year unfolds. My goal is to start on 20 and get down under 18 by year's end. Why is the ...

  5. 9 hole golf courses...cheap and nasty, or something else?

My first year or 2 of golf was spent honing my game on 9 hole courses. When one mentions that phrase, the thought "goat track" often comes to mind. At some venues, this response is justifiably so, however there are some relative gems that pop out from amongst the unadulterated crap.

I don't claim to be an expert course reviewer, but I thought I'd give it a go, and do some reviews of some of Sydney's smaller courses, where 18 proper golf holes are not the order of the day. ...
