View Full Version : Golf Australia Magazine club reviews

Hi

As some of you may know I am now part of the Golf Australia Magazine review team. My first review has just come out, the Nike Sumo2 Hybrids, this week in the June issue.
Was a great club and really liked them, bit pricey if you were to pay retail though, $249 a club.

Next review to go in print are the Callaway i-brid irons.

Tried to get a plug for OzGolf on the day, I wore an Ozgolf Shirt, but the pics so far are only a mug shot (rough one too) in this months review. They normally put more shots in the full set reviews so there may be one in next months magazine.

Had to take hat off for the photos (was not an Ozgolf one, should have been though), Manufactuers dont want any other advertising.

sounds like a bit of funI haven't read a golf magazine in ages, but I think they get a low marker, a mid marker and a hacker to review each club?

Grunt, I think that most of us here wouldnt be that interested in the reviews (anything outside of Bombsquad golf ain't worth reading), but we sure as hell wanna know how the heck you scored this gig [cos we are jealous as hell]

Did the editor happen across Ozgolf and was impressed with your literary style? I find it hard to imagine he could have overlooked DC68 if that was the case.

Grunt
14th May 2008, 07:13 AM
I got the gig by simply replying to an article by email. Have been told I wil get a good run of reveiws as I am in the right handicap zone for the majority of equipment.

Smails did a some club reviews for GA a few years ago.

Grunt, is it a paid gig ? Any freebies ?

Grunt
14th May 2008, 07:47 AM
Just free rounds of golf with new gear, the last time I was told to bring my putter, wedges & Driver. I have been told the majority will be at St Mick's as GA is a corporate member there.

Did you give everything more than 90%?

It seems to me they only score between 89% (for the truly loathesome) to 99%.

That explains why it is only available over the counter in plain brown wrapping

No actual scores just comments, around 30 min interview after the round.

New Review in this months Golf Australia.

Callaway I-brid irons this time. Was done the same day as the Nike Sumos. Not a bad set but the price was quite expensive. My review never made the website version though:(

Even got a full page of Grunt in fullswing. Not sure if I can post a copy of the pic due to copyright so I wont. Don't want to get clicchic into trouble.

Grunt, what would happen if you told the truth in one of these reviews?

Scottt
29th May 2009, 06:33 PM
The bloke who does the reviews is a friend of a friend. I asked him that one night over a beer, MTB, and he said they very rarely get really bad feedback on gear, but they don't use all of the user's comments, so they avoid where possible giving a club an absolute shellacking.

Sometimes the ratings and narrative don't seem to correlate, which I have sometimes found a bit strange.

Well it looks like the test will be in some pretty tough conditions at St Mick's today. Will be a little wet with 15-20km/h NE wind. Guess we will see if the TM Burner Irons can make me play well :)

Grunt

TM Burner Irons, what can I say. I had my best round in a long time today in pretty tough conditions. 40 points around St Mick's in any weather is good but 40 in wind and rain is awesome.

The Irons- 4i -PW + SW in TM Stiff flex 85 steel

Feel - Better than that of the R7 Draws I have now
Forgiveness - Very Good
Distance - Same as R7 Draw

Was my first full game with Stiff flex shafts and I must say I liked how I played. I also liked the gunmetal finish. One low point was the faces wore quickly, the SW had a noticeable mark in the middle of the face from a few bunker shots late in the round.

Highlight was the PW from 115 out on the 2nd to 2 feet for a tap in birdie, the day started well.

Would have loved to buy them then and there but at $150/iron I think I will wait.

The other guy today was an older guy playing with the same irons in Reg Graphite shafts, he hated them. Said that they did not have the feel of his R7's.

You mean the 9-iron with the "PW" engraved on the sole?

"So they will only get 9/10 from him then?"

LOL too funny, plus they'll be "one club longer than his current irons" hehehe

Grunt
3rd June 2009, 09:14 PM
I made sure I did not say there was any improvement in length. I said the distances felt about the same as my current R7 Draws.

They bring a set that suits your details and then you play a round of St mick's with them. A 15 min interview afterwards makes the majority of the review.

So Grunt - how do you feel about having the golfing world able to see your swing in all its' glory? A couple of guys I've shown it to have both commented the same way. "How hard does that guy swing - he's nearly going to fall over by the looks".

To which I can only reply - "Yeah he has a bit of a lash at it."

Was a pretty big day out at St Michaels today. 4 sets of irons tested and one Driver.

Cobra S2 Forged irons
Cobra S2 irons
Titleist AP1 Irons
Titleist AP2 Irons
Cobra Driver (cant remember the name, will post a pic later)

Played mainly with the Cobra Forged, nice clubs indeed and if I were in the market these would be my choice out of the 4 sets. The normal S2's were not for me. AP1's were nice but the shorter clubs just did not feel right. AP2's were very nice indeed but were out of my reach in terms of suitability to my game, would suit a better player than I.

Driver was nice, it is like a Cobra R9 with adjustable face angle. I used the stiff and regular shaft versions in both 10.5 and 9.5 degree lofts. had best ball flight with the stiff Voodoo shaft but I think the 10.5 was more forgiving.

Also the review may be good as I played the lights out with a best ever score around St Mick's, 42 points with 7 pars.

Head was shaved to raise funds for a mate at works daughter, she has a severe brain tumour and has quite a fight on her hands.
