I am finding it difficult to get a game. Club membership is too expensive to justify, and without friends or family also keen to play, or not living close enough, it seems beginners don't have many avenues to get out on the course, unless you want to play by your self every weekend.

Would be nice to do a different club every month just for the overall Brisbane course knowledge - I've only been able to play 3 Brisbane courses in a year.

Mate have a look at the mega membership options. There is a few of those members on this site and it only costs around 140 dollars a year. That will give you the handicap you need to play in open comps and doesnt hold you to only one course like most memberships. Go through Robina Woods website and all the info is there. :)

You are right in a sense, a lot of golfers tend to play with people at the same level, to a degree. I know what it feels like to be out of my league, its very intimidating, regardless of whether the others say that they dont mind.

Sounds to me like a Social Club is more your scene, because that is exactly the market that they cater too. Some of these can even offer real handicaps. There is hundreds of these around the place and they are cheap. You would also be mixing with golfers of your own 'speed' and that would make you feel comfortable.

You could ask the golf clubs close to you about any social clubs that regularly play there, should be heaps. Commonly they play at sparrows on sundays (as members would be playing later)

Peter_RS here often plays with a social group called Hackers. Actually he might be one of many golfers here who have graduated from the Social Golf clubs scene :-)

Also it seems we have a few 'green' golfers joining the forum lately. maybe we should begin to organise more Ozgolf days outside of the normal club comps!

I'm not so much intimidated by better players, it's more about there appearing to be no place for beginners in the golf system of club membership and handicaps - like it's an obstacle that a bemused beginner must negotiate in order to gain access to the golf fraternity. If they want to grow the game they could make this more friendly, perhaps introduce an inclusive b-handicap (beginner handicap) system or something similar. ie. a beginner - amateur - pro system rather than just amateur - pro. Maybe this would just be impractical because a hacker is just going to play so much slower than an amateur.

Anyway, I will look into the mega membership.

When I first joined a club, I relished getting out with strangers. My first hc was just about the max allowable, but I enjoyed the getting out with different people every week. It may feel like you've gotta break your way in, but I think you'd find it easier than you expect.

The trouble with golf is if you don't have a hc, it's harder to get a game, especially on weekends. But if you have a hc you can just put your name down on a comp timesheet and have a game with some strangers. But you get a game and meet some new faces.

The mega membership option could suit you down to the ground. You'll get access to any clubs open comps (mid weeks and sundays usually) and often at a reduced rate compared to the social fee. And there's plenty of games organised here for you to jump into, so you won't be with total strangers.

I can hit the ball okay, and I live in the Valley if that's what you're asking - I have no club I regularly play at in Brisbane although I do play the par 3 in Gympie and sometimes Gympie Pines GC whenever I visit my brother.

I will just keep an eye out for the next ozgolf hacking event. I'm sure there are others like me who just want a bash and don't want to commit to membership just yet for whatever reason (mine being I only bought my clubs 3 months ago, only discovered the flat left wrist 3 weeks ago, haven't sampled enough Brisbane courses to decide on one yet, and don't even know if I want to get that into it anyway).

I think I'm going to have to look harder for social days at any club and see if I can join in also.
