Well the Par 3 comp has been played, is it one of those events that the bloke that does well there has taken himself out of the running. If So Rory Sabbatini is now out of hte running for the Masters. He shot 5 under.

IBF once hit, for those who know Terrey Hills, a drive on the first that finished in the right rough on 12! :D

From what I can see the holes are cut in collection areas in the par three tourny to give the guys more chance of holing out.

What!! But what about the integrity of the course? Surely they can't have blokes going out and scoring -4 or -5 every year. Something will have to be done.

They need to Rory proof the course obviously!

They'd just need to pair him with behnard langer and make sure that at least 4 of the surrounding groups were made up of behnard langer's. Maybe some harringtons thrown in for good measure! That should through rory's game out the window, and make for some interesting sound bites!

No he still flushes his irons but can't keep it on the planet with the driver.
The opposite to Brett Ogle who still flushes it but has the yips bigtime with the short game. A waste of 2 top players right there :(

I got this story this morning, apparently circulating from 'the inside' of the golf industry. The source is reliable, but that doesnt mean much these days :-)

MICKELSON'S GAMBLING DEBTS CAUSE UPROAR AMONG AUGUSTA MEMBERS

Last week Phil Mickelson was playing a practice round at Augusta and
went away from protocol and convinced his playing partners to up the
stakes in the usual $1 game. It was Mickelson versus the other three
which included some of the deepest pockets among the membership. The
stakes: $5000 skins and a pot of $130,000, $100,000 of which was
contributed by Mickelson for the low net score - Mickelson would play
off scratch.

According to one of the threesome which obviously will remain anonymous,
"everything was going great until the back 9 when Mickelson really could
not believe the good fortune of 'chuckie'. He was draining everything on
the greens and when he missed the green twice he had two chip-ins.
Phil's lead on the scorecard looked safe but in the clubhouse we added
it up and lo and behold, Phil owed $200,000." And then it got ugly. The
stories by witnesses conflict, but in effect Mickelson tried to pass the
bets off as laugh on the first tee and insisted "there was no way he
would bet hundreds of thousands on golf." Mickelson believed the
standard one dollar game was in effect.

The threesome was having none of it and before you know it the foursome
was sitting in the office of Billy Payne who was none too happy about
the loud conversations taking place in the dining room. But even in the
privacy of the office, Mickelson was being very difficult. According to
the same anonymous member: "Phil slipped up and admitted that he
initiated the stakes and set the terms of the bet. Then he protested at
having to pay so much and offered 30 cents on the dollar right then and
there, take it or leave it. Billy was aghast and told Phil, you will
arrange to pay every dollar or you will never be welcome at Augusta
again, TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT. Mickelson tried to protest and even made a
snide remark that Billy couldn't stop him from being welcome at Augusta
every April. Billy simply asked are you taking it or leaving it."

Mickelson later called his accountant with the banking details of
'chuckie' and an arrangement was made for a wire transfer of an
undisclosed amount. The worse of this may not be over as the other
member of the threesome was upset enough to call the PGA Tour. When
contacted for a comment, the PGA Tour declined to comment and would not
even acknowledge whether or not they have been contacted about the
conflict at Augusta National.

Courty
12th April 2008, 06:49 AM
Refusing to pay a bet is a low act.

+8 supposedly, not that I've seen anything. All I'm getting to see is Tiger making bogeys...

goughy
12th April 2008, 07:55 AM
I love watching bogeys! I should be used to it. It's what I see all around when I play golf at my club.

Hang on, why do I wanna watch pro's shooting what us weekend hacks do! Can't they show more birdies?

Oh, and isn't phil renowned for his gambling?

sms316
12th April 2008, 08:18 AM
Not exactly flying around are they? Tiger has played 6 holes in 2 hours.

Courty
12th April 2008, 08:27 AM
I get the impression that Cabrera & Appleby are getting impatient with Tiger, particularly on the greens. You can see them their body language and fidgeting in the background whenever they show Tiger putting (which is quite often ).

sms316
12th April 2008, 08:29 AM
It's not like their group is out of position though. The group in front was on the green on 15 when Woods layed up.

Courty
12th April 2008, 08:34 AM
Yeah I know, but he just looks like he's taking forever to walk around & line up his putts.

sms316
12th April 2008, 08:41 AM
He's by no means quick on the greens at any time. Generally speeds up on the basis that he usually doesn't miss many though.

Augusta's greens can't help you just walk up and hit it either.

goughy
12th April 2008, 08:52 AM
I can't imagine how slow a slow player today must be compared to the pace of play from years ago. I remember Faldo being called a slow player in his day. I heard he recently timed some of his old rounds against the current pace of play and found he was actually faster than the current crop. So how slow are the slow guys!

Courty
12th April 2008, 09:45 AM
I think it's probably exaggerated by the fact they showed lots of Tiger and only fleeting glimpses of everyone else. You'd think there were only 3 or 4 groups out there all day.

Eag's
13th April 2008, 09:45 AM

It was great to see a bit more coverage of other players today but I bet that changes tomorrow if Woods gets on a roll.

Grunt
13th April 2008, 11:01 AM
Hope someone in the final pair get up tomorrow, they both look like genuine blokes that enjoy each others company. The 2 shots to 18 were great to watch.

Iain
13th April 2008, 11:15 AM
But how different were their shots in? Immelman hits a big cut, started on the left edge, and Snedeker looked like he hit a draw that started over the right bunker!!

Grunt
13th April 2008, 11:17 AM
I thought it must have been a little fade Iain. You could hear his caddy saying No more, no more, as it was getting close to the bunker.

Iain
13th April 2008, 11:27 AM
Is that what he was saying?? If it was, it wasn't anywhere near as big as the cut Immelman played!!

Grunt
13th April 2008, 11:36 AM
Oh for sure, Immelman played the shot that was needed. Just how many times at Augusta does the player have to hit a straight shot? Seems to be the place where a guy can work it both ways is in the box seat.

Moe Norman
13th April 2008, 01:04 PM
Snedeker hit a high soft fade and Immelmen hit a low power fade.

Immelman has a much lower ball flight and spins it more.

How lucky was he on 15?!

BrisWesty
13th April 2008, 01:20 PM
Very lucky Moe.

Great golf to watch by the last group.

But is anyone getting tired of the ads. Given that they're playing Pierce Brosnan, the grey hair fencing guy, a phone camera, Drummond Golf and Golf World and the Holden Caprice; looks like the demographics are upwardly aspirational older guys who are worried about how they look and who want more loving.

Better find the mute button on the remote. If I hear "You nailed me" one more time, I'm gonna scream!

goughy
13th April 2008, 01:29 PM
Ads would be a joy! They are putting it on the HD channel up here, but we don't get any ads at all. Just the test signal when you guys get ads. Ads may be boring, but a few minutes of test signal is like death!!! It's soooooooooooo boring, and makes 3 minutes seem like 3 hours!

sms316
13th April 2008, 01:32 PM
Could be worse still. It seems that there are only 2 ads going in Canberra. One for the local golf retailer (a knob called Pete) and this lazy eyed wog advertising a real estate website.

jimandr
13th April 2008, 09:18 PM
It is great to see a real Masters again, because the greens have a bit of give in them. As a result, every hole can be birdied, and double bogies aren't far away.

This could be really great viewing tomorrow, with Tiger chasing some high quality youngish guns. I don't think they will all falter, so there will be no grand slam this year (unless Paul Casey wins all four- he's my tip tomorrow).

I'll be watching the Foxsports replay, just so I can enjoy the Samsung phone ad for the thousandth time.

I'm inclined to agree. The back nine Sunday (TM) just didn't eventuate.

Had Tiger or Snedeker been a bit closer and put up a fight we could have seen some real pressure.

But I suppose that just means Trev was too good on the day. Hit 12+ fairways every day of the event and only missed 12 or so greens all week. That's a great effort.

BrisWesty

Probably a dumb question but how steep is Augusta? TV coverage gives lots of computer generated models but nothing tangible like gradients.
Are we talking Brookwater steep or steeper?

Scottt
14th April 2008, 12:14 PM
Not seen Brookwater, but I am told by mates who've been there it is steep enough that they got decent puffed walking up the 18th at a brisk rate.

Like the (currently unused) sixth at Eastlake (over Wenty Ave) for those Sydneysiders who know it.

The other golf has only shown on ten HD, the matchplay etc. The majors are showing on sd, but we were bitching about the other stuff only on HD.

Golf didn't thrill me. But I have to say. Tiger looked ordinary ordinary ordinary. From what little I watched, I saw lots of putts not dropping, lots of not great drives (nothing new). But what stood out the most was his irons. I've never seen his distance control so poor, and his missing left and right. He was no where near the hole on the greens, and all that and still comes outright second!

some of the holes they can't see the pin if they hit it in the wrong spot, and the second shot to the 8th is blind.

Apparently second shots on 13 can be played from about knee height in some spots also
