Peoples, I think we should postpone the Hills International round now???

amanda, are you interested in playing this one? It's probably about 40 minutes drive (if that) from Caloundra.
NorthLakes is a resort style course.

Are you playing, shavey?

amanda
20th October 2004, 03:13 PM
AndyP - this is very tempting! Let me run it by Brad tonight.

Is North Lakes one of those "must play" courses?

Is North Lakes one of those "must play" courses?
It's in the top 100.

I'm not a big fan, because I don't like courses that punish you for hitting straight drives. I think Jarro is a fan. :?

I would rate the Coast resort courses above it, but the OZgolf crew aren't going to any of them on that weekend.

i agree with andyp and know i'll have a shocker but riding in carts is fun, they still have the saucy drink/pie chicks right? :)

maybe this time the offline driving is the key? more chance of fair bounces back INTO the fairway?

I just checked on Whereis the driving time - it says 1.5 hours from Caloundra to North Lakes - most of it seems to be travelling on the Bruce Hwy - does that time sound accurate? Or an over-estimation?

andylo

Overestimated... I did it 20 mins in my haydays!!

Whereis is really inaccurate with their times.

It takes me about 1.5hrs to get from Mooloolaba to home when the traffic is fairly heavy.
NorthLakes isn't far past the halfway point.

RACQ tells me 55 minutes, and it is usually conservative.

Jarro
21st October 2004, 02:44 PM
probably wouldn't even take you 55mins Amanda.

..and NorthLakes is right beside the Bruce Highway at Mango Hill... so it's really easy to find 8)

No can do I believe David.

I think NL is a cart only course? The cost of playing includes the cart hire...

Don't worry about a lift, there are plenty that will be able to give you one....

In an email I received from Steve - he said we might run our own little comp - I'm assuming with the prize being Net since he wants handicaps.

shavey

Could we really have a golf day without a little comp or something?

I know how competitive you guys are.

Bragging rights is one thing :) but a shirt or hat would be nicer... Wouldn't it?

Hopefully organise a few prizes if we get some good numbers.

Might co-ordinate some food and drinks for a few bucks extra after the game, but will look at that later.

From memory, it's all carts Dave, having said that, throw the sticks on the back and you could walk beside the cart  Main reason, there are some holes where it is a good 5-600 metre trek to the next tee.

I reckon this is a super track, the fairways are reasonably wide, hazards are there if you spray it. I lost 2 pills the day I played there and shot 9 over with a triple and a double.

The greens are huge, the fairways lush, the hazards, well, lets just say you could lose yourself if you went looking too deep

My favourite hole in looks was the short par 4 on the front nine, i'd have to guess the third, where you hit about a 4 iron off the tee and a 9 iron second. The hole is only 280 long, but the water starts about 100 from the green and goes to the greens edge  .

Enjoy

when were you there Pete :?: you could've told me, i live 10 minutes from the course..... could have met up and had a round with ya 8)

the 3rd is a great hole. Like you said, 3/4 iron off the tee, then 9iron/PW to a well guarded green.

I have no problems with inviting other golfers but what do the rest of you think?

Not sure about the Amandas etc. but they were the details I received via email. If there are incorrect, please let me know.

And it is meant to be Genex unless it is a copy :) There is also a joke there about head size but it's a family show.

So keep the numbers rolling in, I would like to get around 30 at least.

Is North Lakes the 1st 2005 OzGolf POTY event?

What qualifies an event as a POTY event? Mutual consensus or is more scientific eg. when there is a simultaneous juxtaposition of Mars rising over a waning moon with Saturn ascending in the eastern hemisphere? :?

No. There are at least three on the coming weekend. Nambour, Horton Park, Headland.

What qualifies an event as a POTY event?
More than one OZgolf player involved, and must be organised via this forum in the 1st Tee area. I should be outlined somewhere in the Player of the Year thread.

Transports not the problem guys. Just got our money through from the bank so it reno time.

In feb the extension is gonna get built for our house. By then I've gotta install the new front door, move the toilet out of the bathroom, renovate the bathroom, build 2 built-inns, a walk-in and a linen closet, gyprock some of a wall for the air-con, and if budget allows build a 6x6 shed.

All on weekends only.

I'll see you guys for a game in march (when my 2nd is due so make that march 2006  )

Keep checking my golflink history over the next 3 months to see how long it's been since I've played 18 holes :P

Thanks for all the offers guys. It really is much appreciated, but it's not a transport or money issue. I'm just too busy to fit in much golf for a while. I'll barely get in a game on the weekend at my home course for the next few months.

At the moment I get one or two weekday 9's at about 5.30am so I can get to work at about 7am

I promise that I'll get down for some games next year.

I've been keen to give gailes a go for a while. Haven't played there in years. Or oxley, which I've never been too.

What tees are we gonig to play off? We can't have half the field paying off one set of tees and the other in the comp off a different set.
What is the club comp?

davidp
11th November 2004, 04:35 PM
The club comp (AGU comp) is a single stableford being played off the blue tees. (2nd from the back). See http://www.northlakesgolfclub.com.au/default.asp?p=312 for details.

Shavey, I'd like to be in the comp. $7.50 isn't too much. NorthLakes usually ask social players to play off the white tees, but will make an exception in our case. So everyone can play off the blue tees, even if you're not in the comp.

I think Brookwater LOOKS tougher when you stand on the tee, mainly because the fairways look so narrow. Northlakes fairways look a lot wider by comparison... but they are certainly harder to hold. The wind seems to be more of a factor at Northlakes too.. maybe it's because of the lack of taller trees :?

But i think the hardest part of Northlakes has to be those super-hard greens. We stood at the back of the green after playing a par 3, and you could really see just how firm they were, players were hitting 9irons/wedges into the 5th (139 meters) and the balls were releasing to the back part of the green easily (pin was cut more to the front) takes a while to get used to the greens there for sure.

I still like the layout though 8) and it's proximity to my house

terryand
14th November 2004, 11:54 AM
No way...Brooky is harder IMHO.

First game at Brooky 90. 4 or 5 balls lost i think.

First game at NL 87.(with 2 or 3 shoots lost with poor care factor over gimme putts) One ball lost.

Around the greens is harder at Brooky, especially the bunkering.

Terry.

First let me make a disclaimer. I'm no expert and comparing Brookwater and North Lakes is like apples v oranges....

Overall, I reckon NL is a bit easier than Brooky. From the blues it was pretty short. Last time I played the back tees at NL and really struggled. It's also a lot more open, especially the back nine, off the tee than Brooky. I shot a crappy score due to bad putting and lack of course knowledge. I think it's a course you could play to your handicap on, if played regularly.

Thankfully the greens were fairly flat, as they were extremely firm. Plenty of short irons skipped through. The hard greens and prevailing winds make NL as tough as it is. Brooky's elevated greens and severe bunkering are much more intimidating than NL's. If Brooky's greens were as hard as NL's, it would be unplayable. Thankfully, Brooky's are a bit softer.

Brooky "looks"harder, but many holes funnel offline shots back to the fairway. There was virtually no elevation change at North Lakes, so there was never a sense that shot distances were affected. NL looks pretty innocent, but there were a lot of blind holes, where you could not see adjacent or intersecting water hazards.

One thing that struck me about NL was that there were at least 6 holes that were identical. It seemed like half the par 4's were slight dogleg rights, with a fairway trap on the inside of the corner and played Driver - wedge... A couple of times I thought we'd gotten lost as deja vu was kicking in big time. :?

Oh, and there are too many ugly houses in view from the course.

Thanks to Shavey for organising the day.

Had a great time sharing a cart with Kee. Thoroughly nice guy.

My first impressions of the greens condition at the practice green, were WTF?? Having played on greens the week before that measured about 7 foot on the stimpmeter, my first thoughts were, "Oh, they've double cut the practice green. The greens can't be as quick as this."

WRONG!! #-o #-o

Suffice to say, I had a shocker of a day. It's cured my ho'ing habits for quite a while. A bad swing is a bad swing no matter what's in your hands.. :) Need to practice more and post less.

Iain, awesome long drive. I hit a decent drive on the LD hole and didn't come within coo'ee of the LD marker.

It was great to put names to faces. Hope to see some of you again soon. Eags, Paul, and Iain, I'll be seeing you at Pacific in less than two weeks. Softer greens than NL, thank God for that.

Shavey its always a worry when the host wins.

I was talking to the "Sergeant" on saturday at Emerald Lakes as he was demonstrating his Perfect Stroke machine to the pros and anyone else. He noticed my Ozgolf shirt and asked about it, so i gave him the lowdown and what you organised for us on that same day at Northlakes.

I suggested to him that next time you organise something like this, offer him the chance to demo his machine to the lads, and he is happy to do so.

Hey everyone - thanks for organising a great day out Shavey - we had a fun time (Brad wasn't happy with his golf - but thoroughly impressed by the esky on the cart). Brad is also enjoying his NL shirt.

I sigh now and look back on all the lost opportunities - stoopid short putts I missed and bad chip shots! Oh well - 34 points is the closest I've come to playing to my new handicap in ages.

I have some pictures - but yet to get them off my camera and also somehow post them on here. I will figure it out some time this week.

Thanks to everyone who was there - it was great to meet the ppl behind the names and pictures :D Unfortunately, we won't be able to come up for Lakelands :(

I'm really keen to find out what the CCR was for the day, and whether I will have any handicap movement, but Golflink hasn't been updated yet.

Doesn't look like Northlakes update their competition results page either, but from two comps played in May the CCR was 73.

most of the pro's just use 2 long wooden tees and a 5 foot piece of string.

Dont be so cynical :-)

lots of pros were trying it out, some bought it.

i thought you of all people would be keen to hear about a cheaper alternative

string and tees does exactly the same thing doesn't it :?

Nudgee actually enters the results into Golflink, for visitors.

Having had a go at it, and a quick lesson in why it works, it was very clear why a piece of string is quite inneffective.

Did you check the website?

One thing that struck me about NL was that there were at least 6 holes that were identical. It seemed like half the par 4's were slight dogleg rights, with a fairway trap on the inside of the corner and played Driver - wedge... A couple of times I thought we'd gotten lost as deja vu was kicking in big time. :?

Have to agree Vegas....We pulled up on the 6th tee and thought we were back on the 10th. :?
Other than that I loved the course. 8)

Once upon a time I used to be able to remember every single shot I made in a round well after it was finished. Now I can only remember 1 or 2 holes let alone my shots.
I don't know whether it's because I was out of the game for so long or that I am just going senile :?

Every hole is now alike in my memory.....a blur.

Sure did.

Might be slow at Nambour's end. I think our Secretary Manager has Monday off. :?

Anyone know what score won the Visitor's comp for the day? It might have been in the Sunday Courier Mail.

This is a bit late. Sorry people, been busy sleeping :P

Thank you Andy, Craig (vis), Matthew (onewood's son) for the game.
I had a great time.

Saw a 335m drive from Matthew. Par 5 4th hole, 486m. He was 151m away for his 2nd shot. Hit an 8-iron over the back bunker

Andy, 36 is a great score. Could have been anything if you have a few more on the first 4 holes. :D

Just spoke to Northlakes, and they are re-faxing the result. Might be some slowness at the Nambour end.

The guy also told me the winning score in the visitors comp for the day. 36 points.
Sorry Shavey. :smt102

He did. Shavey is not eligible to win the ClubCorp events, so he didn't enter.
