View Full Version : Sydney - Sunday 12 December

Pete and I were chatting today about the next Sydney get together and I thought I'd put a date up now.

The 2 course suggestions by Pete were Ashlar and Cumberland. We don't want anything that will kill us - Shellharbour was spectacular, but I think an easier course would suit us better :D

My other suggestion is Bexley.

Please feel free to suggest a course - nothing as difficult as Shellharbour or Camden Lakeside - reasonable cost $40pp comp + green fee - and where booking in a large number of players won't be a hassle.

I really don't care if we play a muni course!

I've played Cumberland once and really enjoyed it. Ashlar i've heard good things about, other places we could toss up are Carnarvon (Trung?) and Fox Hills?

I can see about booking 8-12 spots as a 'group' at Fox (Sundays are open days, i can invite 3 ppl).

Either way, count me in.

Thanks Fishy. I know that Carnarvon is 1 guest per member.

Please pick Cumberland! I will be able to go see my relatives after we play!

I am 100% in for this one either way. I will be on holidays, so it's good timing!

:D

Kind regards,

Ben (Ducky).

You are very keen on visiting these relos Ducky - I'm not sure if I'd be that keen to visit all of mine

Dec 12 is OK with me. I'm keen for a game wherever.

I can find out whether we can play at Bayview, if people are keen. Bayview has undergone a lot of changes in the last two years. Interesting course where no two holes look the same. All par fives potentially reached in 2 by long hitters, but they are very tight. Par 71. Not too hard, but it can bite.

If I get permission from the general manager, the green fee may be very cheap.

Ducky, you want the address of my mother in law ???

Dan, only prob with Fox Hills on a Sunday is the earliest hit off 11am, after all the social golf.... I know Ashlar hits off from the crack, but not sure about Cumberland. Ducky, if we did Ashlar, it is about a 12 minute drive from Cumberland, your wish could still be granted.

Ducky
14th October 2004, 07:52 PM
Hah, it doesn't have to be Cumberland, but it would have worked out well as my relatives live just down the road. Wherever you pick will be fine with me, it will be good to have a game on one of the Sydney courses.

:)

Kind regards,

Ben (Ducky).

I checked with the general manager at Bayview, and we can get up to 4 tee times at Bayview on Sunday 12/12. As long as you are a member somewhere, the only cost will be the comp fee ... ie. $8. Bayview, with the new water reservoirs, is in pretty good nick at the moment, so it's a good deal. The only thing is that it's quite far up north (around Mona Vale).

If people are keen, I can go ahead with the booking. I personally don't mind where we play. Just throwing this in as an option. (We've gone south to Shell Harbour, west to Liverpool, so about time for a northern course? )

Great. I've pencilled in 3 tee times starting at 8:30am. I know this is early, but it means we will avoid the afternoon heat. If it is too early, let me know and I'll change it.

No doubting you Mosmanians ;)

You're about 25-30 mins away. Go through The Spit, straight ahead at the Burnt Bridge Creek Deviation at Balgowlah and up past Warringah Mall. Depends on traffic really, but you're the closest so far ;)

Jono

Ducky,

On a Sunday morning, you should be able to make it in 20 minutes. Watch out for the speed camera as you cross the Spit ...

Amanda,

Since the game is only going to cost $8 each, I think $10 per person for a prize is a good idea. I'll talk to Terence and see what he can do.

Thanks, Pete. I don't read the papers so I missed it. :?

How about the game at Bayview? With your length, you could potentially eat this course up and claim the first prize ... I haven't contacted Terence yet, but I am hoping for a component driver head. Or have you pretty much gone OEM now?

I know it's a long drive for you, but come to Bayview. I'll shout you a drink and a really nice hamburger for lunch. The new layout is pretty good. I heard Bayview used to be a bit of a goat track, but they've done a lot of work on the course since then.

Just couple of things.

1) in case I didn't make it very clear ... $8 for the round. $10 each to put into the prizes. This is compulsory ...

2) this is not an invitation day. I have to get special permission from the general manager. I booked 3 tee times, but should be able to get 1 or 2 more groups if I'm lucky. Remember, we are playing in the normal Sunday club comp at Bayview. I think the other members will be unhappy with me if I hogged too many time slots ... which leads me to ...

3) we'll see what the level of interest is like and how many can make it, but if the number is too large, we may have to limit this to Ozgolf members only. I don't want to do that and I'll try my best to get extra time slots, but I can't promise that everyone will be able to play.

Can I have a definite answer as to who can and can't play that day by November 22nd? If you can definitely play, please PM me your full name, your home course, and your current AGU handicap.

It should be a great day ...

Tony,

What I think I better do is talk to the manager tomorrow, and see exactly how many spots I can get. I am hoping I can accomodate everyone. However, because it is not a set invitation day (Bayview has about 8 invitation Sundays per year) I can't say exactly how many tee times we can have.

I'll get back on the maximum number tomorrow. No need to pull out yet, Tony ...

I feel aweful having to say this. Rang the general manager of Bayview today. When I initially penciled in 3 time slots, he said it was no problem and made it sound like I could have 1 or 2 more groups if I wanted. When I rang today, he didn't even recall our first conversation. :? I had to work hard just to get the original three time slots.

So, I'm sorry guys. It will be limited to 12 people. To be fair, I'll have to take the first twelve.

On a brighter note, I picked up the first place prize today from Laurence at Frontier Golf. SMT O2 nine degree head. It looks bewdiful.

Don't worry about the quality of the course, it's always worth getting out regardless. I've played E'Lakes once, i didn't mind it. It's no Bonny Doon or The Lakes, but it's still got 18 holes.

Stu,

Funny man :P

Even funnier, I have been walking around with a smile on my face since yesterday arvo. Today I bought a 580XD Tour with an NV75 stiff shaft. Cost a bit, but the funny part is when I first started my hoing, the 580Xd was the first club purchased, for the bargain price of $525 (I think they sell for $350 or so these days). So I have now gone full circle and, I believe, this will be the last driver I buy for myself for at least 6 months (unless it breaks, of course  ) 8) , the bees knees in my humble opinion. No need for any queerlanders to respond or reply to this post, thanks :P

Hope you get a guernsey Stu, by all accounts Fishy isn't a morning person, so that's one down

Pete, glad you found your "true" driver. 580XD are a very nice head and that's a great shaft. Hope it didn't cost you too much pain and suffering to get back to it. I find the same thing every time I try someone else's driver. They all feel good for a few belts on the range, but eventually I go back to mine old faithful.

6 months... The clock is ticking!

Don't worry about the quality of the course, it's always worth getting out regardless. I've played E'Lakes once, i didn't mind it. It's no Bonny Doon or The Lakes, but it's still got 18 holes.

If there's a day planned, count me in.

Coming from a man that has a reputation of getting out regardless  :D Jono, you just have to wait to see how he's feeling :D

'Ello,

I talked to the local professional yesterday about how many cards I needed to hand in to get my handicap. He said six for the real deal and also mentioned three in relation to something else (but by that stage I had tuned out).

So, obviously the likelihood of me competing in enough competitions to get six cards in under two weeks is not very likely. Therefore, there is a position vacant once again, so anyone who is interested in filling the position should contact Jono and get him to pencil your name in.

Kind regards,

Ben (Ducky).

Ducky - 3 will get you a provisional handicap, so you can play comps at your local club. It will take another 2 cards to get an official AGU handicap ;)

Not sure about '6'?

I don't know Dan. He said six, but maybe he got confused (or maybe I did). Three for the provisional (local) handicap sounds similar to what he was saying. Hopefully, if you all are having a few games over the holiday break I can fill in then.

Lunch and winner's award ceremony after the game (Remember that an SMT O2 head is up for grabs). Tell Natalie that you'll be late ... in fact, tell her that she might have to come and pick you up ... Tooheys goes extra well with those burgers ...

Amanda and Trung, if you are going to meet up at the Olympic Park, the best way is to come up Lane Cove Rd and then onto Mona Vale Rd. Keep going until the end of Mona Vale Rd (see Trung's map). Turn left onto Barrenjoey and then left again onto Pittwater Rd. Left on Darley St and the golf course is on your right. By about 8 am, all the parking spots will be taken, and you have to park on Darley St. Advice: Do NOT park along the fencing of the golf course. The short par 4 11th runs parallel to the fence and I've seen more than one car being hit by a stray golf ball.

If anybody gets lost, either call my mobile, or call the pro shop on 9999 3078.

Very small car park ... 30-40 spots. Plans for a new clubhouse and underground parking are in place. Don't know exactly when that's going to happen ...

If there are no parking, park on Darley St but not along the 11th hole. You should be able to get a spot if you get there by 8am though ...

Guide to playing Royal Bayview

Overview

Bayview is not a long course by any means. However, it does give the golfer a few options. You can play ultra conservative, or you can go for all the par 5’s in 2. Most of the course is relatively flat except couple of holes coming up to the clubhouse, and the hilly section across the street that contains 4 holes (4th to 7th). Few holes have OB stakes (white with black top) where you think there might be water hazards. I’ll try to mention where these “hidden” OB’s are.

One interesting local rule. If you have wide wheel buggies, you can roll your buggy across the green. I think the reasoning is that it saves the fringe area … who knows? We generally don’t call the group behind up, EXCEPT for the tee shot on the 7th (which has blind landing area). Here, you should call the group behind to tee up before you hit your shots into the green.

Hole 1
Par 5

Down hill tee shot. There are 3 palm trees in the middle of the fairway. If you hit your driver 230m+ on flat, you should be able to clear these. Aim for the right half of the fairway, but beware that there is OB to the right. If you pull your drive left, you may run out of fairway as the hole bends slightly to the right about 200 meters from the green. The drain that runs along the left side is GUR. If you can carry the ball 250-260 meters on flat, you should aim for the furthest bunker on the right as you’ll be able to clear this and will only have a mid-short iron into the green.

You have to make a decision for the second shot. There is a wide burn (yeah, OK … a creek) that runs across the fairway some 30 meters short of the green. If I am further away than the 200 meter marker, I lay up short of the creek with say an 8 iron which will leave me a sand wedge in. If I’m closer than the 200m marker, I usually have a go at the green. The water to the right of the green is OB whereas the water behind the green is a lateral hazard (I think …). Green slopes back to front and usually is much quicker than the practice green.

Hole 2
Par 4

Two separate teeing areas. On medal days, we tee off next to the first green (the hole is straight). Usually on Sundays, we go back down the 1st fairway a bit and tee off across the water (the hole becomes dogleg left). If you can carry the ball 240+ meters on flat, aim for the tree on the left. You should be able to carry that and the bunker, leaving you about 120-130 meters into the green. Be careful because if you block your shot to the right and run out of fairway, water runs along the right side of the fairway. This is OB. If you hook your drive and fail to clear the water, there is a drop zone near the 1st green.

For the second shot, it is best to miss short and left of the green which will leave you a chip uphill. Short and right will either catch the bunker (with a palm tree in the middle of it) or leave you in the heavy rough, leaving you a delicate flop shot over the bunker. If you go long and right, you have to hit it over the back bunker.

Hole 3
Par 5

This is a “love it” or “hate it” hole. Many golfers usually hate it when they first play it. I still haven’t figured out how best to play this hole. Dogleg right par 5 hole. The fairway is narrow, and about 350 meters from the tee, where the hole bends sharply to the right, there are two large trees in the middle of the fairway. There is water on the right where these trees are (i.e. at the corner of the dogleg), and as the hole bends to the right, there is also water along the left side of the fairway. The water on the left comes out quite a bit onto the fairway, especially about 100 meters from the green. This catches many players who try to cut the corner with their second shot.

Off the tee, decide whether you are going to be aggressive or conservative. Use either the driver or the long iron. If you drive the ball past the foot path that runs across the fairway some 250 meters from the tee, and you’re on the left side of the fairway, you MAY have a shot into the green. You still have to hit a high fade over some trees at the corner of the dogleg. As long as you clear the trees, there is some space on the right side of the green. Water runs up the left side to the green.

If you play conservative, then use your 180-200 meter club off the tee. There is no point going for more. Remember, OB runs along the right side until the corner of the dogleg (the water on the right, up to the nets at the corner of the dogleg, is OB. After the nets, it becomes a hazard). You can either hit your second shot over the two trees in the middle of the fairway or slightly left of it. It will leave you some 140 meters to the green for your third.

Bunkers short/right of the green. Some space on the right side of the green, but water on the left. Green slopes back to front.

Tricky hole to make par on. If you figure out how to play this hole, let me know …

Now, across the road to the hilly section … After you cross the road, you can get to the 4th tee via one of two paths. Path on the right is short and steep. If you have a carry bag, you may want to go this way. Path on the left is longer but less steep. If you are pulling a buggy and not so fit, I advise you swallow your pride and go this granny route …

Hole 4
Par 3

Uphill par 3. However, it is better to miss short than long. So if the tee is 150 meters from the center, then take the club that you’d normally hit 150m on flat. If you pure it, it’s on. Otherwise, you’ll have a chip from the fairway. The rough behind the green is thick. If you go too far, it’ll run down the bank. Also, it is better to miss to the right than left. Again, the rough on the left is thick, and there is a steep bank if you go too far left. The green slopes severely right to left. So, although the right side is the side to miss on, you’ll have a downhill chip/putt to the hole. (This is the highest part of the course and the green can be very quick). If you missed the green left but was lucky enough not to go down the bank, then you’ll actually have an easier uphill chip. A tougher hole than its index of 11.

Hole 5
Par 4

Downhill, short dogleg left. I know only one way to play this hole. Tee it high and aim over the trees on the left. If you carry your drive 230+ meters, and you can hit it high, I say go for it. I actually aim slightly left of where the green is. (between the green and the 6th tee). The worst thing that can happen is if you block your drive right and run out of fairway into the trees.

If you don’t want to have a go for the green off the tee, take your 200 meter club and hit it straight down the fairway. Bunker if you stray left or hit it too far and run out of fairway. You’ll have a blind lob wedge shot into the green.

The 5th and 6th greens are noticeably slower than the others. They are relatively new and don’t see too much sun. The undulations on this green is pretty tricky as well. Watch carefully when others putt.

Hole 6
Par 4

Uphill “what you see is what you get” par 4. OB along the right. Bunker right approx 210 meters from the tee. If you carry 220 meters on flat, this will be your landing area. So aim slightly left of these bunkers. Approx 110m from where the fairway bunkers are to the green. Again, this green has tricky undulations.

Hole 7
Par 4

Arguably the toughest driving hole on the course. Downhill (severe drop from the tee) dogleg left. The landing area is blind from the middle and back tees. Hazard along the right side with a drop zone at the bottom of the hill. If you hit the drive too far and don’t cut the corner, you may run out of fairway and go OB. Water on the far side is OB. The bush on the left is thick, and you’ll have hard time finding your ball from here. From the Sunday tees (middle tees), if you carry your drive 230m on flat, then aim for the tree at the corner of the dogleg. You’ll carry this and the bunker at the corner of the dogleg and will have a wedge in. Don’t try to bite any more off the corner, unless you can confidently CARRY the ball 250+m on flat. If you don’t want to take on the corner, then hit your 180-200 meter club straight down the fairway. If hitting from the front tees (ie. where the ladies tees are) subtract 20 meters from above yardages.

When you are at the bottom of the hill, waiting to hit your shots into the green, turn around to see if the group behind you is on the teeing ground. If they are, call them up. The group on the tee should indicate when a player is about the hit. One of his playing partners should be holding a club straight up to indicate to the group in front. After the shot is hit, the group on the tee should indicate the direction of the ball flight. Because the landing spot is blind, the group at the bottom should indicate whether the ball is safe or not. If the ball is safe (ie. Not in the hazard, OB, or in the bush), then you indicate this by flapping your arms like a bird. Don’t ask me why, just do it. 8)

Tricky green to hit that is slightly elevated. It’s shallow front to back and not that wide either. Miss right and you’ll probably be under the trees and a sole bunker guards the left. If you go long, it's a tough chip up the bank from the rough. Green is pretty flat so don’t read too much break.

Hole 8
Par 3

Short par three, with well guarded green. If you go over the green, the ball will probably roll down the bank into the water. Left side is well guarded by the bunker as is the right. Water short of the green. Green has two tiers. Easy to 3 putt if your ball is on the wrong tier.

Hole 9
Par 4

Slight dogleg right. From the Sunday tees, if you drive the ball 240m+, you’ll probably run out of fairway into the rough or water (if you go too far). If you can hit the ball high, cut a little bit off the corner by aiming at the right tree line. Alternatively, hit a slight fade. A good drive should leave you with about 110-120m into the green.

Careful with the second shot. If you miss left and don’t catch the bunker, you’ll probably end up in the creek that runs up the left side. Favour the right side of the green. Another back to front sloping green.

Hole 10
Par 3

Short par 4 for Amanda, par 3 for the guys. Off the back tees, it’s 210-220 meters, but on Sundays, it’ll probably be 155-165m. OB on the right side. For some reason, this hole tends to play about 5 meters longer than stated yardage. Plays easier than its index 1.

Hole 11
Par 4

You’ll notice a little metal box on the right side of the teeing ground. This houses an intercom to the halfway house (the hamburger joint) If you want a quick bite mid round, order before you tee off. I recommend either the hamburger or the chicken burger. Sausage and onions aren’t too bad either. We don’t stop midround on Sundays, so you’ll need to eat on the go.

Uphill short par 4. If you can carry your drive 230-240 meters on flat AND you can hit it high, I say go for the green. The green is guarded by bunkers on all sides (the bunkers at the back and right of the green are especially tough to play out of). The real danger is if you hit it too far right (OB into the parked cars on the street) or hit it long and left towards the 12th tee. The practice green behind the 12th tee is OB. I’ve seen many good players pull their drive left and hit the cart path next to the 12th tee and out of bounds. Also, if you hit into one of the 3 bushy trees on the left, you can say goodbye to your ball. These trees just eat up balls. Smart play would be to lay up short of the greenside bunkers with your 180-200 meter club, leaving you a short pitch onto the green. I always go for the green with my drive. Haven’t hit it yet. Well hit drives bounce over into the back bunker, I’ve pulled a few either OB or onto the 12th tee and I’ve gone OB onto the street a couple of times as well (haven’t hit a car yet). Hmmm … perhaps that’s telling me something. :?

If you are extra long and can carry your 3 wood/2 iron about 230 meters, then you should be able to hold the green. Otherwise, probably best to lay up (so I keep on telling myself  ).

Hole 12
Par 3

Downhill par 3. Best to miss short/left, leaving you a relatively easy chip up the slope. Over the green, you’ll be struggling to get up and down. Bunker left/right. Narrow green, sloping back to front. Take one club less than what the yardage says and concentrate on hitting it pure, not hard.

Hole 13
Par 4

Straight par 4. Water to the right of the green. If you go long with your approach, you’ll be in the trees and chipping up the bank onto the green.

Hole 14
Par 5

Interesting double dogleg par 5. Bends left off the tee and right near the green. OB along the left side all the way to the green (ie. the water is OB on the left). As tempting as it is, don’t try to cut the corner off the tee. Instead, take your 215 meter club (say 3 or 4 wood) and try to hug the left half of the fairway (be careful of the fairway bunkers on the left though). You may still have a shot into the green. There is water and trees short and right of the green. However, if you are going for the green in two, and you are confident of carrying these trees, it is better to miss the green to the right where there is some space. If you pull left and go too long, you’ll run out of fairway and will probably go into the water (OB).

Hole 15
Par 5

Slight dogleg right. Aim for the right half of the fairway if you can drive the ball 230+m. Otherwise, aim for the left half of the fairway. There is a foot path that runs across the fairway about 200 meters from the green. From here, you can go for the narrow green guarded by bunkers on both sides. It is better to miss slightly left of the green and short. Water about 10 meters behind the green.

If you are not going for the green in two, then you have an interesting second shot. There are two palm trees left half of the fairway about 100 meters from the green. Also Bunker in the middle of the fairway about 50 meters short of the green. Bit like an obstacle course, really … Do what you need to negotiate these.

Hole 16
Par 3

120-135m par 3 over water. Creek short of the green that runs up left side of it. I tend to favour the right side and take plenty of club, but you really need to hit this green if you want your par. Over the green is safe, but it’s thick rough and the green slopes back to front.

Hole 17
Par 4

Straight par 4. Tee shot is pretty much WYSIWYG. If you hit way right onto the adjacent fairway (13th), it’s OK. Left, however, is pretty much dead.

Water left of the green if you go left of the bunker. You can’t see this from the fairway, so keep that in mind. New deep bunkers right of the green, but these are still GUR. I tend to favour the right/short side of the green with my approach.

Hole 18
Par 4

Short par 4. If you go too far to the right, you’ll get blocked by the trees on the right and the overhanging branches. Ideal drive is a draw or a straight shot towards the left half of the fairway. Tall trees guard the left side of the fairway and if you hit these, you probably won’t be able to get on with your second. The smart play will be to take a 200-220 meter club off the tee with a slight draw. You’ll only have a short iron or wedge into the green. There is no really gain by taking the driver.

The green is on top of a hill, and slopes severely back to front. If you go long, it’s a tough chip/putt downhill. If you go too short, the ball may run all the way back down the hill.

OK. With the 1st place prize of SMT O2 driver head on the line, I don't want any comments like "you had home course advantage" when I win on Sunday ...

See you Sunday.......BTW, what is the dress code in regards to socks? How long must they be?

From the Bayview website:

Short sports socks are permitted with shorts. They must be predominantly white in colour. Sockettes are not acceptable. If long socks are worn, they must be pulled up at all times

The rules seem a bit sexist - they explicitly state all ladies must be neatly and tidily dressed - but they don't make the same comment for the men! Just what I expected really 8)

Could be worse, they could say "All women must be neatly attired IN THE CLUBHOUSE, as they are not allowed on the course". Not that I'd ever play a course like that  ......

Thanks for the info, see you Sunday Amanda!

Fishy, I expect you to learn it off by heart. There will be a quiz before the tee off ...

Amanda, I must defend my home club here ... It's one of the few clubs that has equal membership fees for men and women. So the lady members have equal rights ... they can play in Saturday comps etc. That's why you don't see many guys taking a leak in the trees ...

OK. Here are the groups. I tried to mix up the low and the high handicappers.

Group 1
Fishman (17)
Trung (9)
Fishead (25)
Zipptopp (24)

Group 2
Jimandr (5)
Amanda (21)
Brad (20)
TS (12)

Group 3
Speirsy (4)
Jono (10)
Virgal (22)

As you can see, we have a spare spot in the last group. If anyone is interested, please post here, or PM me.

Thanks.

How about we take the 2 best stableford scores per team on each hole? Or an Irish 4-ball - best 1 score on par 3, best 2 scores on par 4s, best 3 scores on par 5s.

Did we get a 12th? Sorry, i haven't checked back, too lazy ;)

We played team stableford a few weeks ago - 3 best scores of a 4-some are recorded. Good fun, and should be interesting with a single comp on as well...

Hmm, play for the team, or play for me... :-k

This is over-and-above the comp of the day, just a side-niggle between ourselves of course ;)

amanda
12th December 2004, 04:24 PM
It ended up being a par event - scores for my group:

Trung - square
Amanda - sqaure
Geoff - square
Andrew - 10 down

We also took down stableford scores - which are quite different - John has those I think.

Winner of the day was John with 6 up but due to his local knowledge, John passed the prize onto Rob - 1 up (I think)

Uploading the pics into a separate thread now...

Thanks everyone for driving all the way to my home course. I was quite surprised how early everyone was considering that many had to drive more than an hour (everyone got spots in the tiny parking lot 8) ). With constant rain on Friday and the gloomy weather forecast, I thought the weekend would be washed out, but it turned out to be a gorgeous morning. A bit too hot, if anything.

The tees were well forward (some mens tees were right next to ladies tees) and the greens were as soft as Dolly Parton's breasts (an image just for you Jarro ... ). The greens were pretty badly affected by the recent heat waves with lots of brown patches ... I think it's the worst they've been since I joined Bayview 3 months ago.

Anyway, onto the scores ... There were 4 separate games.
1) Single stableford (amongst ourselves)
2) Irish Fourball (amongst ourselves)
3) Singles Par event (club comp)
4) 2-Ball Par (club comp)

Jono (10) 44 $18000 8)
Speirsy (4) 39 $11000
Fishman (18 ) 37 $10000
Trung (9) 36 $9000
Amanda (21) 33 $7500
Zipptopp (25) 33 $7500
TonyS (12) 31 $5500
Glen (16) 31 $5500
Brad (18 ) 30 $4000
Jimandr (5) 29 $2500
Virgal (22) 29 $2500
Fishead (25) 19 $1000

Irish Fourball:
Jono/Speirsy/Fishman/Glen 89 points
Trung/Amanda/Zip/Fishead 84 points
TS/Brad/Virgal/Jimandr 83 points

Scratch:
Speirsy 72
Jono 73
Trung 80
Jimandr 83

It became evident that nobody read my essay on how to play Bayview ... Bayview is not long, but it's one of those courses where a bit of local knowledge can cut a handful of strokes off your score. So the first place prize (SMT O2 driver head) went to Rob Speirs, who smashed his way around Bayview for a one over 72. This guy is seriously long. First hole, 445 meter par 5 from an elevated tee ... Puts his tee shot down the middle,115 meters from green with his driver. This is where "normal" people lay up to with their second shots. Nice easy sand wedge from there to within 3 feet. Taps it in for an eagle. Rob could have eaten the course up had it not been for the slow greens. Couple of his chips and putts came up well short.

My other playing partner, Dan ... He has added "control" into his golfing vocabulary. Nice, smooth, gentle fades that seemed to trace the shape of the holes (many left to right holes at Bayview) and deadly with his lob wedge within 50 meters. 37 points on an unfamiliar course is excellent.

Anyway, I'd better not write another essay ... nobody will read it to the end anyway ... thanks again, everyone for turning up. It was a fun day.

Great day, good company. She was a hot one, you could feel the moisture coming out of the ground in the heat. Plenty of sweating was done by all.

Highlights? Definately Rob's drive on the first  Jono's cool head all day - the most 'commando' +2 scratch score i have ever seen. He was straight all day, and got up and down regularly. Of course, there was my chip on 10 - after blocking it to what we thought had gone OOB, to find it 30 metres from the green, lobbed, hit the pin and stopped next to the hole. I guess i used my luck up having that ball stay in play.

Winner of the day was John with 6 up but due to his local knowledge

Now now... it was an awesome display. Rob and I did benefit from having 2 locals in our group however.

Jono (10) 44 $24000
Speirsy (4) 39 $11000
Fishman (18 ) 37 $10000

I just wanted to see that again ;)

 Aw, you're too kind.. really. :? Actually think i putted pretty poorly too - dare i say it but could have been a few more.

That's a little cocky mate ;) Actually, my own reaction was "No sh!t Sherlock!" My Saturday round was terrible. In all seriousness though, with 2 or 3 three-putts thrown in and a few other aberrations, i could have shot better. Remember we're still on for a bet when (if?) you ever pluck up the courage to front up to an event with me ;)

TS, Sorry about the trip down Mona Vale road. I was a bit too close to you down the hill

Teed off with an old ball and kept it for all 18 holes. Was quite happy with that. No 1 priority for the day was to keep the ball on fairways. I did that quite well.

However, the putter went to sleep the latter part of the round. Had a brain-fart on the 15 green. The hole was no longer than then 30cm away. I missed the damn putt  . 3 putted the the 17

Jono... Just added my scores up.. Should be an even 36 points in stableford for me :D

Yep, Amanda described that missed putt of yours in great detail. Apparently she found it funnier than the best Seinfeld episode ... you know, the one where Kremer hits a bag of brand new Titleists into the ocean ...

Jono... Just added my scores up.. Should be an even 36 points in stableford for me :D

Ahh ... Amanda forgot to put a score down for you on the par 3 16th (the one with creek in front of the green). Perhaps she was still too busy laughing from your missed putt on the 15th? I assumed you put your shot into the water and had an "X". :?

Well played, mate. 36 is a very respectable score for a single handicapper on a new course.

Jono,

I added my scores up, went out with 19 points and came back home with 17 points (wiped the Par 3 16th, birdied the Par 5 14th. Front edge in 2.)

BTW.. None of us in my group knew about single stableford scores were counted for individual honour   .

We played as Par Event (as per club comp) and there were many putts left short

Jono.....GREAT day my friend......You are the worlds worst 3hcp, but by far the BEST 10 I've ever played with.....Holden Scramble here we come!

Well, since most have already chimed in with their impression of the day, I'll do the same.......

1. Bayview GC has the best Chicken Burger I've ever had at a golf course. Seriously. Great staff too, very friendly, and a great deal, only $8 to play in the comp. Please pass on our thanks to the GM Jono.

2. That course is lots of fun to play. You could (ok, I could....) shoot 65, 75 or 85 on any given day.....Risk/reward par 5s, good par 3's.......lots of fun....just need to cut the greens a little lower is all :P

3. I don't hit it THAT long......although I did kill that one on the first......

4. Jono must have felt a little guilty about his score to give me the SMT head (That course isn't easy enough for a 10 to shoot 73 on  ....Jono is too good to play off 10....but like I said, keep it at 10 until after the 2005 Holden Scramble), I'm deciding if I'm going to use it to enter some Long-Drive comps, or just donate it back at the next event at The Vintage.......

5. TS, you owe me a beer........I drink 50/50 Old/New...... I'll collect next time we play 8)

6. FishDan got over his L.O.F.T problem after the 5th and really played well.......several near misses with the Lob Wedge otherwise he was well on his way to 40 points......

ANyway, thats all I can think of for now.....Thanks again to everyone who played, it was tons of fun....and I look forward to the net one......

I don't struggle with L.O.F.T. It comes quite naturally to me. Had a great day and the golf didn't totally stuff up the walk. I think my day was shown that I played the par 5's in 4+ two of them were pars and the first included a penalty stroke for in the water.
TS was totally unsociable and didn't join myself, jimandr and Brad in the creek.

Thanks for the photo's Jono. I didn't realise that I had fallen into bad habits again. Thanks also for organising the day.

If anyone thought that Dan was unlucky with his lobbie then they didn't see Jimandr's ball get so scared of the fall to the bottom of the cup that it literally turned and ran away.

A great day. Let's all do it again, although New Brighton with all of its trees scares me. No wonder Brad played so well from the trees including a birdie after being inside, under and around a group of them.

I was always going to exclude myself from the chance to win the prize ... Looks like we may need to organise a day at the race track to see who is a better driver behind the wheels, other than driver of the golf ball.
Tried go-karting once - I'm actually hopeless at it - feel more comfortable with a whole car surrounding me

Now that I'm part of this community, let me make some comments.

Firstly, having used my broadband allocation this month, the "reduced to dial-up speed" deal I'm on meant it took me a long, long, long time to read all 11 pages of posts.

I haven't seen all the photos, and none of mine. I hope they are still viewable in two weeks time.

Unlike most, I took notice of Jono's fabulous course guide, even though I hadn't read it at the time. Being a player who doesn't carry it 230, I played the short holes conservatively, except for the third. I hit a driver out of bounds there, and may not have done if I'd read the Guide first.

To answer the question asked: I was 205m away on the first, about 170 to carry the pond, with Jono's warning ringing in my ears that I had to go for it from there. I hit precisely the opposite shot to what I was attempting, a low draw instead of a high fade, and lost my only Pro V1 ball. I did, however, make a miracle recovery by hitting a sand wedge to 2 feet. Virgal Tracy did exactly the same thing from the other side of the fairway.

Did everyone have their card returned to their home club? I checked the computer at Fox the other day, and no mention of my (handicap beating ;)) round at BayView.

Just want to work out where the delay is, although i have my suspicions..

I don't see anything from the Bayview round on Golflink. Mind you, Shellharbour never came back either!

Not surprised about Shell Harbour seeing as though they appeared to be in strife for some time - and they probably didn't want to 'waste' money on returning cards.

Might give Bayview a call to see check.
