This may sound strange but I'm interested.

Do other guys get bonus?
Should you take what is offered?
Would you ask for more if it was reasonable?
Does it mean anything if you got a bigger bonus then you direct manager?

Is there anyway to not pay so much in tax other then putting it in super?

I understand that people will not want to share details but any general input would be welcome.

QANTAS gave us Nothing, have even dropped the Xmas day meal for those at work Xmas day.
We get $1000 shares for the billion profit this year plus $1000 put on our pay.

Was not a Xmas bonus, our mangers get a bonus related to Lost time injuries. The Shares & Cash went to all staff regardless of how/where you work.

Grant. Sounds like you are not happy that you only got a $2000 bonus.

Was not $2000 after tax and the shares have a trading lock of 3 years. The net effect could be more yes but more than likely will be less. The Airline industry is at the top of it's cycle and profits/share prices will not continue to accelerate like they have done in previous few years.

I certainly didn't get any specific bonus for Xmas, and haven't at either of my employers (Commonwealth and large US-based company).

I'd much prefer a salary increase to a bonus anyway.

My missus who works for a small broking firm received a relatively large Xmas bonus/gift. But that's just the sort of thing her boss does.

Agree totally AP, would rather a wage increase higher than inflation or even some sort of job security.

Grunt. Boo-frikkin-hoo. $2000 before tax etc. is still $2000 more than most people would be getting, including me.

Never had a Xmas bonus. bank industry scrapped them years ago and replaced with performance based salary increases. That way the lazy schmucks get nothing.

I like the way this started, lowball the boss and ask for more, I'd like to see that

No Chrissy bonus here, last thing I need is staff whining at this time of year cause the chick with the big tits got one and the flatchested one didn't !

I don't think Grunt should be criticised for complaining about a bonus. It's really all relative to your salary, et cetera, et cetera.

Courty

A bonus is exactly that, a bonus. It should not be expected, or taken for Granted.

Some bonuses are expected. The definition of bonus doesn't necessarily apply. Of course, employers don't mind if you think they are doing you a favour.

Never had a bonus of any sort. Don't get em contracting, and my previous boses have been too stingy for bonus when I have been on salary. Don't think EDS do bonus either.

Its almost a unwritten rule at my work, to make up for all the after hours, weekends and no leave loading.

As for my bonus it was less then last year even though I have done more work and brought in some major new $$$$ projects. On the other side it looks like everyones bonuses are down (my manager was shocked I got a bigger bonus then him), I think it didn't help one of daughter companies way under preformed.

In previous years some bonus were 10-40K+ for the key guys, one of the reasons I started with them. Don't worry mine is nothing near the lower end.

Without a good bonus it makes it hard to justify large blocks of time away, work crap hours on installs. Next year I'm already confirmed to be working 17 days straight in Jan, working 12 days straight over easter.

The guys that got the big bonuses have move on, They were never back wards about asking for a bigger bonus.

Anyway its just my bitch for the day. I guess I should be happy

No bonus for me. And to rub it in last fortnights pay was 3 days late!

senecio

$200 every year from my employer (once you've been there for more than 2 years). Every employee gets the same amount from the cleaners to the plant director.

We also get a $50 bonus for every unused sick leave day at the end of the year. I haven't had a day off in 3 years :)

Like Courty said, a bonus is a bonus. Take it and accept it for what it is. If you're not happy go in fighting on your next salary negotiations.

if i clocked on at 8 and knocked off at 5 i agree, a bonus should not be expected.

So a bonus should be based on the quantity of work and not the quality?

I'm a contractor and got a $50 gift cerfificate this xmas for no reason. It's unheard of really, but I don't understand why all bosses don't give something. It's the thought that counts.

Now Pete, this is about the 5th thread you've banged on about how hard you work, with little reward. I think it's about time you either find another job, or get over it.

Poidda,

Yeah PeteyD, I have been shocked this festive season. I contract for a small software house that has the contract at the BP Refinery. As a contractor I have been to 3 xmas lunches (which last all afternoon) and still be able to bill my time.

No stop winging about the price of fuel. ;)

I technically work for myself now...and don't give myself a bonus however the few golfy things throughout the year are claimed on the business which is a nice treat.
I employ a contract cad guy and my missus put together a hamper with about $100 worth of stuff in it (he's only been with me 6 months).
Ross employs a secretary who I contribute to but Ross never gives a thing so I slung her a Coles voucher of a few hungy.
I agree with poiddy...its not so much the value..just something would be nice.

Rich. Are you trying to convince us that you got a heart?

Why get security in a job you hate? You get a lot more than others, you should be happy. $1k of shares today (and every year?) is very generous, it's not worth $1k, it's worth a lot more.

All bonuses are marked as 'discretionary'. That means based on company performance, you could get $0, you could get more. No one should bitch and moan about bonuses if they are lucky enough to get one.

If you're still in this job in 6 months time and whinging....you're a goose.

Will you leave the company if you don't get a bonus?

As a R&D role my job is fine and the freedom is great, even the role of project manager I have had to tale on is ok(a guy left and was never replaced), its doing the crazy hours and days during installs that can get a bit much. The freight industry goes 24x7 and waits for no one.

I have got a bonus the last two years and they are nice just not what my manager and big clients have recommended to my CEO.

Now Pete, this is about the 5th thread you've banged on about how hard you work, with little reward. I think it's about time you either find another job, or get over it.

see above... I know I have posted I work a lot of hours before but never banged on about the little reward. This is the first time I have ever talk about reward. Then the thread was intended to be more general about what other people get if anything then me. Even if the later has happened... ITS NOT ALWAYS ABOUT ME. In the orginial post does it say I'm unhappy? As much as I may bitch about the hours if I sat on my hands all day I would go crazy

If you're still in this job in 6 months time and whinging....you're a goose.

Its the pay rise every 6 months that keeps me going ;). I have briefly considered other offers.

Depends entirely on the industry - for many people a performance related bonus is an expected and reasonable part of their remuneration package.

A general "here's a few grand just because" bonus is a completely different concept.

We get ours paid in August but are negotiated/granted in July.

I got less than $10k this year, but I only started back at the company in April and contributed nothing to the FY 06/07 result so I was pleased to get anything at all.

Our bonus structure is uncapped and unspecified, purely performance based. Although sometimes I find it hard to see how they measure my area's performance, we are completely at the mercy of the property market.

Now I am looking after a couple of large projects in Townsville where the market is going nuts, I expect a hefty bonus next year for doing next to nothing! The stock walks out the door up there, I'm not spending a marketing $ and am having to have a ballot system to sell stock due to demand!

Would hate to get the Sydey projects when they come up!
