How does one get pass not having an official handicap (but previously did many years ago)?

I'm definitely interested in some match play comp fun. :>

Ok...lets start early...who is in.

Honesty system...what scores do you normally shoot and what courses do you normally play?

v205
10th December 2007, 11:45 PM
Lowest handicap was 14. Handicap was 15 when stopped playing. (we are talking about 7 years ago though).

Maybe 18 would be a reasonable start and adjust it from there depending on how well (or bad... ) things go.

Well. It appears I may have to withdraw, I am moving home and jobs so unless people are willing to travel to Mildura to play against me I will have to withdraw.

At this stage I will leave myself in there in pencil, but if there are other people looknig for a spot I will withdraw.

Ok - xmas is done and dusted. Let's get this thing underway and get a game organised. If we all get together hopefully we can get some of the first round matches played and have a chance to all finally meet.
I'll try and pm a few of the other Vics and we'll get a game happening.
Who can host? Seeing I'm down on the Peninsula it may be too far for eveone to travel. Or is that not a problem?
Some input please guys.:smt023

PM's sent to RobD, MarkD, V205, falcon. Who else????

Quite happy to travel and play anywhere.

Currently living in Spotswood (Where? - http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=spotswood&ie=UTF8&z=14&om=1 ) but quite happy to travel and play down your way FG, as I regularly do it for the Mulgrave Country Club golf days anyway.

Just my luck I have to take on the form Fem Ozgolfer (nice draw FG;))

I have just sent a request to the manager requesting a couple of tee times on a Sunday, when I get back the response I'll update the group.

Lets have a great year Vics.

Vics,
I have had confirmation from the manager that playing on a Sunday is OK. He is even going to book in the tee times before the timesheet is released to the members.

We just need to decide on a Sunday now.

Please add your preferred date below and I will lock it in.

I'll sacrifice myself and take the walkover into the 3rd round

You could do a random draw again for the second round and who ever is last out of the hat gets a free pass to the next round.

Either that or scare up another 6 players...

Hey guys,

I'm still around. How are we doing this? I'm definitely interested if location and schedule is achievable.

So what handicap do I get? Normally shoot 90's for an average round, 80's for a good round. Probably 18-20'ish depending on course?

Toolish is now 6 hours drive away - I'm not sure he will make it.
So with 2 outs that leaves us an even 8 and the draw can easily be changed to:

Flowergirl v Chappy
Kev v V205
Swanny v Bruce
Andigold v Johnny Boy

Given that Swanny and I will be carpooling over to Southern it could be a loooong ride home for someone.

Toolish remains undefeated in OzGolf Matchplay.

FG will be in post Valentine's Day let down and is in danger of playing like a leftover teddy with 'love' embroidered on its' stomach.

As for Swanny - he pulled off some deadly approaches on Sunday for tap-in birdies. I don't remember any of them being played from his drives though. Let's see how he goes playing his own ball all day.

(Criticism could equally apply to the poster)

When is your last shift before Sunday mate? I have a feeling something may just 'blow up'.

1st round of Match play
Well a great day was had by all at Southern yesterday. Warm weather (a little hot if truth be known), course was in good condition and company was great.

Started with greetings to those known and introductions to those not (Swanny, Kev and v205).

1st Group (Commentary will be added by Bruce)
Bruce vs Swanny
AndiGold vs Johnnyboy

2nd Group
Flower Girl vs Chappy
Kev vs v205

First hole particularly unspectacular for all players, with both FG and v205 taking the points and going 1 up. The second hole revealed Kev’s secret weapon, his enormous distance off the tee, this one would have nudged the 300+ mark. The short par 3, 3rd resulted in good pars to both Kev and v205 with v205 getting up down from out the ball washer, FG and I tried to out do each other with poor tee shots and she won FG v Chappy back to square. 4th hole average scoring all round. The 5th Southerns’ signature hole, 3 great drives and then I stepped up and snap hooked the drive nearly out of bounds, the others chopped around and lost balls, I my second in to a hazard, chipped to 10 foot and dropped the putt for the worst par on record. Chappy goes 1 up. V205 well on top in his match. 6th hole par 3 Rennie had a great par to square the match, kev and v205 squared with v205 throwing the hole away with some ordinary putting. 7th hole par 5 Chappy takes out some frustration with the big dog and slams a big drive then capitulates to give FG the lead at 1 up, v205 makes a great par to extend his lead (this hole was made even more special by Bruce’s bee dance). 8th hole couple of good rives by Kev and Chappy, fantastic 2nd from FG to the fringe, Chappy interesting second shot – approach to the green was stopped by a birdie (of the feathered variety) FG then knocked her putt from off the green in to go 2 up. 9th hole rated number 2 testing par 4, v205 and Chappy take pars to take each of their matches on to the back nine.

FG 1 up and v205 3 up (this may need to be confirmed by Kev and Vincent)

10th FG extends her lead with a bogey and Kev bounces back with a good par to get one back on v205. 11th nothing special. 12th par 3 v205, FG and Chappy hit the cut surface and Kev over clubs into the back trap with Chappy and FG squaring with good pars and v205 had a small brain fade with the flatstick and Kev had the putt from hell. 13th long par 4 allows Chappy and Kev (massive drive) to get one back with good pars, FG and Chappy square, v205 to 3 up (needs confirmation). The 14th index 1 for the gents proved a challenge for all off the tee, Chappy goes 1 up after a scratchy bogey and Kev gets the nod with a double to stay in the hunt. 15th FG and Chappy square the hole and v205 goes back to 3 up with Kev travelling all over the place. 16th short par 3 v205 and Chappy stiff the tee shots to within 1 putt range whilst Kev and FG miss the green, nett result v205 closes out the match 4 and 2 and Chappy drops the birdie putt go dormie 2 up with 2 to play. 17th long par 5 everyone gets off the tee ok and is in the hunt for their second, FG misses the green with her third and Chappy knocks his 3rd to 8 foot and closes the match out 3/1 with a crappy 2 putt. 18th FG collects a great regulation par for her efforts on the last.

Good day all round, next round scheduled for Spring Valley (pending availability) on Sunday the 30th of March.

Kev has the card for his stats, IIRC v205 - 89/69, kev - 102/80.

Its been a long time since Ive seen a guy shoot 102 and yet hit 300m drives!

How was the course guys? Are the fairways as good as I heard they are?

PY,
I know it sounds odd, but Kev seriously put a few well out there, I let the shaft out on a couple but they were as a result of pure frustration. I got 'em too.

Terrific day yesterday, thanks chappy for hosting.

I was a little dissappointed in my form on the greens but tee to green I hit the ball well. Johnny Boys consistency was the key to his win though as he was very solid the whole way around.

I know Bruce was planning a blow by blow review of our 4somes matches I just hope he doesn't neglect to mention his two 4 putts. :)

Thanks again to Chappy for the opportunity to play at Southern.

Kev did hit some spectacular bomb drives.

The fairways were superb which helped me hit 3 out of 3 decent fairway wood shots.

It was a pleasure hosting you people at Southern, unfortunately for FG it seems that her and I are always drawn to play each other and it always seems to be at Southern.
If we play each other next year, I will play you wherever you like.

Luckily the next round will be at Spring Valley.

Firstly - thanks Chappy for organising the teetimes. Had a wonderful day and the company was great.

Pyongyang - it says a lot about my short game - i.e non existent . The fairways are sweet. Excellent to hit off of. Greens are good too, just a bit faster than I'm used to though.

I'll put up a summary of Vinces' and my play later this evening - I just lost what I typed in due to timeout....

1st hole - Vince 1 up
2nd through 4th - halved, with Vince having a lovely up and down on the 3rd (the guy had an excellent short game)
5th through 7th - Vince takes the holes to go 4 up
8th - I get one back
9th - halved thanks to the fact I get a shot on this hole
So at the turn Vince is 3 up
10th - I get another one, due to Vince feeling sorry for me and playing bunker to bunker either side of the green
11th - Vince goes 3 up - a great 3rd shot from him splits the bunkers guarding either side of the front of the green
12th and 13th - halved - 4 puts by Vince on the 12th saves me from losing another one!
14th - I get this one due to having a stroke
15th - Vince goes 3 up again - a lost ball costing me dearly
I'm really sweating now, 3 down and 3 to go
16th - I push mine right and Vince puts his safe at the front of the green, I basically need to chip it in from about 15 to 20m to have any chance - Missed by about 8 inches and then 2 putt. Vince makes an easy par, and that was all she wrote.

Well done Vince, great game :smt038

I certainly learned something from watching him yesterday. Hopefully I can carry it into the next game...

Pictures to come soon.

I better do my summary. My memory of holes is pretty poor though . I live in the moment like Dr Bob says I should.

My slow starts cost me dearly again. Still muttering under my breath that I have to give him 5 shots we teed off in warm conditions with a mild breeze. Swanny has a shot on the first (we used the stroke index) and promptly opens with a par. Shit! Another par on the second for Swanny and I'm 2 down. Double shit! Then I make a complete hash of the par 3 3rd (with a 4 putt)and I'm 3 down after 3.

Swanny has 9 points after 3 holes and I have 3.

I finally start to come good and manage to halve the next 2 holes and finally win won back when Swanny 3 putts on the 6th. Bruce 2 down.

Still cursing from letting me get one back he tugs his drive pretty badly on the par 5 7th and burns a couple getting out. I chunk my wedge for my third and then chip on for 4. Tony then brings out his secret weapon. A visious attack bee that spends it's time alternating between dive bombing my putter face and ball with lunging at my face. I can't shut out the distraction of a bee bouncing off my nose and 4 putt again. Back to 3 down.

I put my head down and come up with a par on 8 that Swanny can't match after putting his drive into a water hazard I couldn't remember and none of us could see. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

9 has be giving him another shot. I bomb a good drive which has Tony shooting at the green first and breaks my heart by sticking it to about 8 feet. The pressure of having to hole my second is too much and I push my wedge off to the right (again) . Swanny comfortably makes par and turns 3 up. (and 21 points to my 12)

We half the 10th and I win the 11th with a par that takes my career sand saves to 5 :). 2 down. (or was it the other way round - it was a while ago)

Long on the 12th is far worse than short. Guess which one I chose in comparison to Swanny and then leaving my bunker shot on the top tier when the flag was on the bottom. Swanny makes the up and down for par and I'm 3 down and having to give a shot on the next 2 holes. This could be ugly.

Swanny tugs his drive on 13 and has to take an unplayable from his ball resting against a big ole tree. That shot lost helps me halve the hole as Swanny watches his bogey putt slide by.

14 I smash my best drive of the day well over the rise and down the hill. Swanny struggles a bit and put the acid on by hitting my first GIR for the day. Take that! A 2 putt par and I'm back to 2 down.

The dogleg 15th and I don't quite get my line right to just run through the fairway. Swanny takes the 3W trying to play safe and blocks it badly. The heat may be starting to take its' toll. He recovers pretty well to be over the left edge of the green while I knock a good pitching wedge to 10 ft. He makes the up and down for par and my birdie putt wobbles over about 4 lines before missing. Crap! 2 down with 3 to play.

It is at this point that I should point out my tendency to pump my tee shot OOB at ever opportunity. (eg. 2 and 5) and so the 16th into the corner of the property has me thinking of purple elephants. I try really hard to yank my 9I OOB here too and Swanny hits the green. Miracle required here. No miracle forthcoming. A simple par for Swanny and it is all over 3 and 2. (Swanny finishes with 40 points to my 30)

I just got jumped at the start and never got back close enough to catch him.

Well played mate. Why is it everyone I plays shoots a net 60-something. Toolish did it to me with a nett 66 at 13th beach and now Swanny with a nett 68. I will again offer my services for anyone in their club champs who needs a guaranteed boost to their scoring.

Odd post mate. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and not treat you as a troll just yet.

If you were disgusted with my scoring how do you think I felt!! I hit the ball well tee to green but was slaughtered on and around the greens, I didn't keep any actual stats but I did put a little mark on the card when I 3 putted & I had 11 little marks on the card by the end. I think I ended the day with something like 47 putts. I struggled to stick a chip all day & on one memorable hole (3rd) I fatted to the front of the green, chipped over the back and chipped over again, yet each chip had landed exactly where I wanted it to. I then 3 putted from the front of the green. I ended up standing over putts with no idea of hard to hit the ball, all confidence shot.

I'm not sure what you mean with your comment about my disgust with Southern as I've always maintained (on 2 other forums) that it is a pleasant course with a friendly membership. It ended up in my final 3 when I was looking to join a course in the area. The only negative comments I can ever remember making were to a Southern member who constantly claimed the course was in the top tier in Melbourne, something I disputed. I enjoy the golf at Southern there is a nice variety of holes and the course is very well presented. The use of containment mounds however slips almost into the obssesive and the course has way too many bunkers that serve no strategic purpose for me. Still it is a fun place to play and a good test of golf. it was once described to me (very accurately, I thought) as a very good country course, just built in the city. How you distill those opinions to disgust is beyond me.

I often laugh when course comparisons are drawn and the bashing of layouts and designs ensues. I don't think this occurs here to a large degree, but it has been and is rife on other sites.

I enjoy all tracks, with some being more enjoyable than others and honestly feel a little fortunate to get out and play as often as I do, with a young family.

My reasons to join Southern after 11 years at Kingswood were purely personal as I now get the opportunity to play with my dad almost every week and he wont be here forever so I relish each round. I am proud of the course condition and believe that by and large they have some of the best greens going around, as for the member base well there are dickheads everywhere and if the guys who are members of the top tier courses in Melbourne don't believe that there are dickheads at their clubs well they are kidding themselves. All courses have imbecile members some just have more wealthy ones.

Truth be known, if I could have my choice, I'd join Metropolitan tomorrow, but just don't have the connections or the brass for the joining fee.

Anyway I look forward to the next round of golf at Spring Valley as I enjoy playing there a lot.

When I picked Andi up before the match on Sunday I was reminiscing about the last time I played his home course Spring Valley I had my best putting performance ever 24 putts and Andi has to go and get crucified by the greens at Southern.

In his defense they can be particularly brutal if you are not used to them and the pace of the greens did vary from back to front. This is not a regular thing, green consistency is something you can generally rely on.

I played at Spring Valley on Monday morning with one of the pros the hotel sponsors. A nice turnaround to Sundays game, a nett 69 with 30 putts. I played the par 3's in 1 under so very happy with that, but I feel a bit like a home track hero who can't carry the form to other courses. :(

Dean Kinney who I played with was down for qualifying for the Moonah Classic and he tore up the course having 8 birds in the last 10 holes for 62 off the stick. But it's a tough game pro golf and he missed qualifying by 4 shots at The Champions course at Sandhurst on the Tuesday.

Finally played the semi finals against Chappy (me 19, Chappy 10) today at Southern with the company of Kev. Hot and windy conditions made it interesting. I have never been good at remembering the details of a round of golf (even more so when it's hot but this is a quick summary. It was a TIGHTLY fought match with never more than 1 hole (iirc...) between us switching leads a few times (iirc...) and was square going into the last hole. Chappy said he took some notes and will do a write up so I'll leave the details to him.

Thanks Chappy for hosting again and the good match. It's great to be back out there again coming from the minimal winter golf.

The match between v205 and myself (Kev match supervisor), was greeted by a warm and windy Sunday afternoon.

Short Summary
The game was decided by two factors; consistency off the tee and a masterful putting display, none of which were shown by myself.

Result v205 (19 hcp) def Chappy (10 hcp) 1up.

Match Summary - Detailed
I was to give v205 (Vincent) 9 shots for the match.

1st
Off the tee I went left (which was to be trend for the day) and V went right we met at the green, both writing down 5's, but with a shot up his sleeve V goes 1 up.

2nd
A little fortunate off the tee, I again go left and get a bounce in and out of a fairway bunker. V hits a nice drive down the right hand side. I stick a gap wedge to about 10 feet and 2 putt for par. V skips through the green into a trap and scraps around for a 6. Back to square.

Kev and Vincent both hit monster drives, only leaving themselves 50-60 into the green.

3rd
Par 3 over water, both V and I find the putting surface, Kev goes a little walkabout. V addresses the ball and drains a 35ft’er for birdie. I 2 putt for par. V goes 1 up.

This long putt was the start of a few for Vincent from outside 30 foot.

4th
Par 5, the first tee shot that I have got out of the middle for a few rounds, kev hits a big ball that gets some treatment from the wind and Vincent goes down the left hand side. Vincent and I play the hole for solid pars.

Vincent still 1 up

5th
Par 4, Vincent gets a nice drive away, I find the trap right and Kev’s ball gets wet. Vincent misses the green and I play one of the only really great shots for the day, out of the trap from 160 into the wind to about 15 feet. 2 putt par for me and a 3 putt double for Vincent sees the match back at square.

6th
Par 3, Vincent and I both miss the green long and left, whilst Kev sticks his tee shot to about 12 foot. I struggle out of some longish fringe and Vincent chips well. Vincent pars and bogie. Kev walks off with a regulation par

Vincent 1 up
7th
Par 5, Big drive by Vincent, I am scratchy but well down the left side. Big Kev tries to hit the green off the tee and manages to skull it up the path way about 100 yards.
Vincent’s second puts him in a little trouble which has him scrambling for a 7, I am in the green side fringe for 2 but still only walk off with a par. But it’s enough to wrestle the match back to square. Kev takes a snow man.

Match square.

8th
short Par 4, Kev goes well left, I top a ball about 110mtrs and Vincent puts himself in the middle of the fairway after taking an iron off the tee. My second shot is disgraceful and goes left into a trap, whilst Vincent puts his second about 15 yards short of the green. My 3rd comes out and leaves me with a 30 footer, which I 2 putt and walk off with a 5, Vincent lets me off the hook after a poor chip and 2 putts.

Match square.

9th
Long Par 4 into the wind, Kev and Vincent smash their drives well down, I go right into the light rough. Kev’s hit was one of the biggest I have seen on that hole into the wind. Vincent and I both scramble for 6’s but my 3 putt versus his 2 putt coupled with me having to give him a shot on the hole meant Vincent was 1 up at the turn.

Vincent 1 up

Chappy out in 41, Vincent out in 42 and Kev out in 54.

10th
Par 4 into the wind, Chappy goes well left again, Vincent hits one of the only poor drives for the day and Kev goes long and right.
Some scrambling resulted, Chappy takes 5 and Vincent takes 6, but with stroke on the hole, the hole is halved

Vincent 1 up

11th
Par 5, Chappy murders his drive down the right hand side leaving 165 to the green, Kev and Vincent go left off the tee. My second finds the trap and I’m out and a regulation 2 putt par for 5, Vincent drains another 25+ ft putt to halve the hole. Kev takes a double.

Vincent 1 up

16th
Temp Par 3, One of the courses practice greens is in play as a temp while the proper par3 is being redesigned. It is a 90 mtr knock down to a smallish green. I am 2 feet short of the cut surface off the tee whilst Vincent is well short a Kev finds the 18th fairway from the tee. My putting woes continue and I take a 4, Vincent battles for a 5. Kev waves the flag and walks off a little shaken from the ordeal.
Match back to square

12th
Par 3, Chappy pushed yet an other tee shot left, Kev goes well through and Vincent is not far from pin high in the right rough. I scratch around for a bogey, Kev takes a 5 and Vincent takes back the lead with a par after a great chip shot.

Vincent 1 up

13th
Long Par 4, Chappy and Vincent get decent drives away, while Kev checks out the 14th fairway. Chappy scrambles for a bogey, while Vincent spends far to much time in the bushes long and left of the green. Vincent takes a snowman and Kev takes a great 5 from where his tee shot finished

Match back to square

14th
Index 1 Long Par 4, Chappy goes left yet again off the tee, whilst Kev and Vincent get great drives away. Chappy takes his punishment out of the trees and plays his 3rd to about 15 feet. Kev goes to long and Vincent puts his 2nd in the trap, his 3rd stays there as well. His 4th goes into the trap on the other side. Chappy thinks there may be an opening, but Vincent plays his 5 out to about 25 ft and proceeds to drain the putt. Chappy takes 2 putts and the hole is halved. Vincent can do no wrong with the flat stick. Kev takes a 7.

Match back to square

15th
Par 4, Chappy goes left yet again off the tee, whilst Kev and Vincent get good drives away. Chappy hacks around and has his only wipe for the day. Vincent makes a good par and Kev takes a 6.

Vincent 1 up

17th
Par 5, Everyone gets off the tee well, but Kev lets some shaft out and it goes miles. Chappy bunts a 3wd down to about 60 mt out and Vincent pushes his second into a trap. Kev goes on to make a great par. Chappy puts his 3rd to about 8 feet and Vincent scrambles for a 6. Chappy drops the putt for a birdie to get the match back to square going down the last.

Match back to square

18th
Par 4, Everyone goes left off the tee, Kev thinks the pressure is getting to Vincent, it wasn’t getting to me cause I had been goin left all f^*en day. We all take our medicine except Kev who attempts to produce a miracle shot, only to find himself playing his 3rd form where elephants go to die. I punch out to the green fringe and Vincent to about 40 out. Vincent puts his 3rd to about 30 ft. I putt up and then drop a 6 footer for par. This was good for me but the flip side was that I had to give Vincent a shot on the hole and he hadn’t missed a putt all day. So as expected he stepped up and drained the putt for par to match mine and a 1 up win.

Vincent wins match 1 up

Vincent 90/71 – hcp 19
Kev 108/87 – hcp 21
Chappy 84/74 – hcp 10

A great day and a truly masterful putting exhibition by Vincent.

For the record I had 35 points in the club comp.

Thanks guys. I had no business winning the match (had quite a few shanks) if it wasn't for the freakish putting which rolled very well on the true greens (and those greens will get even better as it was at around 80-90% of coring recovery).

Swanny, I'm pretty flexible next few weeks. Andy mentioned he might be able to host in Oct which should work well for us? Otherwise, we can pick a place that's convenient.

We should make an effort to get as many Vics as possible to the final.

It's important if we want to start seeing the matchplay numbers close to what those boofheads :) in the northern states experience.

If nothing else to watch Vincent and his marvelous putting machine. Freakish

Cmon Vics

Swanny, I see on your other post that you are now a 19 capper. Makes it easy for our match to be planning off the stick against each other. You want to play our match b4 or after your trip?

Swanny doesn't need that, just take V's Scotty Cameron away from him, that will even things up a bit.

I'd be keen for a hit on 14 December, haven't played at Sanctuary Lakes this year. (I'm also happy to host at Spring Valley if you need a neutral venue)

v205
14th November 2008, 02:45 PM
What's the usual number of shots given for home course advantage? 5... 10...?

I wouldn't mind SV again but if the majority wants SL it is ok by me too.

15??

14th November 2008, 03:06 PM
Swanny have you been to Spring Valley yet?

If not, it's definitely worth a look and Andi is an excellent host.

15th November 2008, 07:36 AM
Ok - Swanny or AndiG - one of you bite the bullett and start a new thread for this event. Whoever gets in first - then we will play there. Then we can all put our names on the list.
And V205 - no home course advantage extra shots crap ;)

Swanny,

Yeah, we should try to finish our 2008 matchplay a.s.a.p.

Which other clubs are you a reciprocal member of (from SL) that's somewhere between us? Where do you live btw? I'm in Ashwood.

I can play this Sunday or Monday but just can't travel too far (30 mins drive max) away due to wifey's commitments.

Swanny, I'm flexible to play on weekdays or weekends for the next 1-2 weeks. There must be some good twilight deals around?

I played Keysbourough about a month ago and they have some deals. I wouldn't mind playing Kooringal (ex member long ago) again which is in Altona.

Otherwise we may have to flip for this matchplay final coz I'm starting to get back into tennis. :D
