Heard something about this the other day and was scoping about on the net when I came upon this and it reminded me!

Catching one person out of the millions who do the exact same thing every day is not exactly going to put the wind up a lot of people.

I think it was the precedent setting that the companies would have been after.

US precedent though. Not sure if our courts would let such a what if case go through. Got to hope our court system is not as anal as the US yet. AS it was a civil case they only had to convince the jury, not actually prove it

contents of hard drive have nothing to do with these cases, nor does downloading. they have simply observed that person uploading copyright materials.

Some of these court cases are falling over due to lack of evidence. The ones that dont didnt get a decent lawyer. It seems that simply having an IP address is not enough according to this judge/case. (http://recordingindustryvspeople.blogspot.com/2007/09/tanya-andersens-motion-for-attorneys.html)

Can just imagine the conversation in the lock up.

"What did you get nicked for?"
"Murder. What about you?"
"Prison break."
"How long were you on the run?"
"First two episodes of Series 2."

Heck, why not just issue a warrant with your warranty for the HDD recorder.

Some performers including Madness and Oasis are encouraging their fans to bypass the labels and download their music, sometimes giving it away for free.

The believe free downloads enhances their profile and they make more money from concerts and merchandising, than they can from CD sales through the labels.

One guy has said, pirating his music is not stealing from him, but pinching a t-shirt from his stand is.

I hope more muso's like this take this stand, and maybe one day change the way the recording industry steals from performers.

Local Brisbane band Regurgitator is a great example of this. They are now huge in Brazil and tour there a lot. They put this down to free downloads of their music. Why on earth would someone in Brazil go out and pay 20 bucks for an album of a band they have never heard of?!?!

All this means is the bands will be getting back to touring more. Prince did a similar thing in London a while ago when he have away a copy of his new album with the Sunday paper. He then sold out 21 nights straight in London the following month.

The record industry wasn't too happy though.

The only bands that every whinge about lost revenue due to piracy are the bands that make millions from album sales anyway

Remember Lars Ulrich from Metallica ? He successfully sued Napster because he hated the fact that some kids got his songs for free .... when the twit is worth a motza :smt013

I agree with poidda, i thinka lot of artists really embrace the idea of file sharing .... it opens up the whole world to their material, something no amount of money could buy.

Hell, i wish this was around when we were recording our original stuff :(

Found a website once that had a calculator for recording contracts, so you could work out from your grant of say $50k to $100k how many records need to be sold to be able to pay the loan to the recording studio back the grant and promotion costs. OTOH it was about a million albums before the artists see another cent.

Site is run by an ex recording label exec campaigning against the industry ripping off artists
