View Full Version : 2008 Qld Matchplay discussion/nominations

markTHEblake
3rd September 2007, 12:15 PM
Qld matchplay this year - entries close Friday the 11th.
I'll do a draw that night. The names will be pulled out of a hat. Any byes in the first round will be given to those drawn first. Maybe I'll do it live and spread out over the night, just posting each result as they are drawn, for the fun of it!

Completion dates for each round will probably be the same as last year. There should be enough time to get the matches done. Remember, you only need yourself and your opponent available, it doesn't have to be on a specific ozgolf for this. Any agreed on course will suffice (except putt putt and par 3 courses ;) ).

Sorry Mark, not trying to jump over your post here. Just thought I'd find a fixed place to put this.

Just tossing this idea around. I notice that the NSW group dont have a problem organising their matchplay, but the QLD group efforts have been not as good, though 2007 does seem better than last year.

I reckon that this is because NSW have 16 people that are really keen. In Qld we have about 20 odd that are really keen, and the rest are so so, as we really had to recruit to get it up to 32 or thereabouts.

Its really important that anybody that nominates for this *must* be able to commit to play every game on time. This is the same rule that applies in our own clubs.

To put it simply, I think we need to get rid of the dreaded forfeit.

Here are my suggestions for next year;

- must nominate themselves. If we have to chase them, then obviously they are not committed.
- limiting the field to 16, and use the POTY to seed the players, as this is a good indication of commitment to Ozgolf days.
- a forfeit is a forfeit. no second chances.
- a forfeit comes with an incentive - they are out of next years matchplay.

If too many keen players are left out of a top 16, we can do a top 12, and have the rest play off somehow for the remaining 4. I think a fireball matchplay day would sort that one out quick smart. (one Ozgolf day, everyone plays everyone in matchplay. most wins get you in) That will also sort out who is committed and who is not.

If people miss out because we use the POTY, obviously they were not committed to Ozgolf the previous 12 months. That might sound harsh because it might be work, or personal commitments that prevented that, BUT its those same bloody commitments that cause the forfeits, right :)

$20 to nominate! Winner takes all!

$640 up for grabs will make people committed!

wow - laying down the rules blake.

what about new entry ie - me this year? I was happy to play where and when possible - andy and i played 3 times in our allocated time period to decide a victor - i'm sure there are other people that'll join ozgolf that'll be plenty commited, and wouldn't want to wait around a year before they get a crack at the matchplay.

Why not just let people nominate and see what numbers we get before axing the field down to 16.

other than that i think it's agood idea to be more ruthless with the timing and cut-off/forfeits

kpac

poidda that is pure genius mate.

BrisVegas

you haven't talked about walkovers. I noticed there are a few in the NSW results.

Also, something like a "feed-in" tourney for the first round losers might be fun. I know from my tennis days, I typically faced a top seed in the first round and got smashed. If it wasn't for the feed-in, I wouldn't have gotten much tennis. (fwiw, I usually played Coffs_Hacker in the feed-in and got beaten anyway, but at least I got two matches!)

We should do everything possible to get at least two matches for those who want to be involved.

PeteyD

i didn't think we ha that many walkovers this year ...

not always that easy to walk back down the 18th with others playing behind you in a comp:-s

Putting challenge!!

 like i'd agree to that!

like what moe? maybe where handicaps are all level etc you could have a quick chip off or similar - and even the playoff hole can make handicaps a little bias...

I would have been happy to play one extra hole to find a winner (but that could have kept going for a while if you kept halving holes) is there a countback method to matchplay?

$400 and $200 for first and second then $20 for 3 & 4 and it could be great.

I would be one of the people who would have trouble if the poty results were used as I just can't play enough ozgolf games to get anywhere in the results. But I would have made any game I needed to to play the matchplay.

I really don't know what might be the best system, other than taking people at their word that they will be able to make any game.

If you notice, this is the first year I have competed in the matchplay. I've known in the past that it was going to be very difficult (but not impossible) for me to make every game, especially if I made it to the final. So I didn't enter. Plain and simple. This year is the only one I was gonna make any game I needed to no matter what, including the final at the champs (if that's when it is) so that's why I entered this year.

To me, this is the plain and simple thinking needed if you enter the matchplay. Can't give it 100%, don't enter. That includes all dates up to and the final.

AndyP
3rd September 2007, 08:21 PM
if you don't finish inside 18 holes, please have a playoff instead of repeating the same match 3 times! It's a fair comment, IF it was holding up the matchplay, and if there was another way to complete it during a comp. We continued to play because we knew that our availability wasn't a problem, and because we enjoyed the experience of matchplay.

I completely agree with only having those that are 100% committed playing. It's unfortunate for those not based locally, but it's the best logistical solution.

Is it feasible to incorporate some virtual matchplay for the remotely-based players? It could be a good way to include more members who aren't fortunate enough to be based close to each other. I'm sure there are plenty of other members who would like to be more involved in the big events.

AndyP & I went to the 19th hole (10th hole again) to sort out our Windaroo game last year, but Shavey and I played for 36 holes (tied after 18 at Wynnum Cup). Both options depended upon circumstances. If it's still tied after 36, there probably needs to be sudden death or similar - eg nearest the pin from 40m to the practice green - any number of ways to play a sudden death, but it needs to be an agreed solution between the players.

markTHEblake
5th September 2007, 10:14 PM
anything other than heading down the 19th hole is really an inequitable situation if the handicaps are not fairly even, so it will often be really hard to work something out that is fair.

Going down the 19th is often not an option as we are visitors at most golf courses, though I am sure most wouldnt mind if it was late afternoon.

The only thing i can think of that might be fair is something sudden death, like nearest the pin on a chip or putt. No Handicap involved but the higher handicap chooses. He can then go for one of his strengths, and that should even it up.

I was joking about the field being closed at 16

I was'nt.

if more than 16 have some sort of playoff for the bottom spots. the initial seeding based on participation in Ozgolf days and if any forfeits in the matchplay in the past then they go to the bottom seed (or out altogether)

kinda harsh - yes, but i think its a fair way of reducing forfiets by ensuring those who play are the keen ones.

goughy
3rd January 2008, 02:52 PM
Personnally, I think full draw from the start. You don't wanna get caught with more than one round of qualifying, and how many should get first dibs in the first round. Should we take 8, or 10, or just 4.

Draw of 32. The top seeds from last year get byes. If a new person wants to join in the matchplay after the draw is done then those with byes have the right to knock back playing them, starting with the highest seed back to No.1. If no one wants to play them then it's too bad. If they do want to play them then the new entry has to make every effort to meet their playing requirements. They did join in late after all.

At least this way we know that there is only gonna be one round before the round of 16. And the top players get into the round of 16 anyway.

What if we take 8 through, and have 20 to play off. Round robin takes too long, and how do we fairly get down to a final 8 from 20 (for example).

Any forfeit for non-medical or non-moving-locational reasons get's a slap on the wrist and a banner bagging them. If someone forfeits then only their prior opponent can fill their spot and only if the current opponent agrees.

goughy
3rd January 2008, 02:55 PM
Also, the only reason I think a prior opponent should fill a forfeit is because this is a fun, social competition. I couldn't see one member saying they'd rather take the forfeit than get a game. Hence a little leeway. Remember, this is all fun after all...

Otherwise I'd say forfeit and your out, no match played and your opponent progresses!

AndyP
3rd January 2008, 03:05 PM
So what you're saying is: "Don't change anything".

goughy
3rd January 2008, 03:11 PM
I think the only thing that could change; and I think majority rule from the competitors in the matchplay; would be whether the top seeds get the byes or should it be random draw.

Anyone trust me to draw names out of a hat?

Jarro
3rd January 2008, 03:13 PM
Random draw ... there shouldn't be any byes.

PeteyD
3rd January 2008, 03:16 PM
there has to be Mark unless we get 32 in

goughy
3rd January 2008, 03:18 PM
You have to have bye's if you don't have 32. If you only want to have 16, then already 6 people will flat miss out. That's not fair either.

It's just a fun comp guys, not sheep stations.

Jarro
3rd January 2008, 03:18 PM
We still have a little more time to get some more names down though don't we ?

AndyP
3rd January 2008, 03:21 PM
We won't get 32 names of members 100% committed to playing.

goughy
3rd January 2008, 03:21 PM
Plenty

We'll get as many as we can, and then should we run a poll among the competitors on whether it's a random draw for byes or the tops seeds get them? Or do I need a poll on whether we do a poll? Should I poll that?

Eag's
3rd January 2008, 03:22 PM

So just a question , it was said that only those commited to playing on the dates should get involved, what are the dates?

goughy
3rd January 2008, 04:28 PM
The dates aren't specific playing dates. They are dates by which each round should be finished. You will have your specific opponent, and the two of you just arrange to play some time before then. It's usually at least 2 months. So if you're committed to playing the matchplay there is plenty of time to get the games in.

Many will get together and play several of the matches at the same time. At wnnum last year there must have been at least 4 of the first round matches played.

Oops, sorry Goughy. I was busily typing below while everything else was going on. If you want to use this then so be it.

In the interests of getting started, given last year's POTY results, here's the seedings based on those who have put their hand up.

Top 4 from last year's matchplay get the top 4 seedings. Unless anyone else joins in, the current 7 people outside the top 16 end up playing an additional round against seeds 10 to 16.

Any subsequent people who want to participate start from seeding #24 onwards. If their opponent has already played their round of 16 game, then they need to slide down the order. eg #24 would need to join in before #9 has played. If #9 has played, they need to see if #8 has played already. Does that make sense?

Do we have a cut off date for participants to sign up?

I guess Wynnum isn't a bad start for matchplay events because:
(1) it generally gets a good roll up from ozgolfers and
(2) it's a stroke round.

From past experience, Stoney has organised the playing block with Wynnum, and we've fiddled the groups on the day according to any matchplay.

damoocow
4th January 2008, 05:56 PM
Qld matchplay this year - entries close Friday the 11th

I appreciate you running all this goughy but still have a problem with the 2009 suggestion of seeding from POTY - you could have the situation where the 2008 matchplay champ misses out on the following years event because they only played a handful of ozgolf days - may not happen but is a possibility - yes I agree we all have committments blah blah but would like to see all keen to have a go get a chance - maybe the fireball matchplay would solve that problem ?? - anyway just my opinion - [actually have no idea of my standing in POTY 2007 - but it would have been low ]

I'm thinking of a live draw tonight, about 8.30pm. First 5 names drawn get byes, spilt 3 on left and 2 on right of draw. The rest get picked in their pairs for the first round and alternate left/right side.

Ok, so what's the story of following the matchplay index on the cards? It's fine when playing off the 1st tee, but off the 10th do we follow the index on the cards or do we follow it from the 1st hole?

Just figured we needed some lively discussion ;)

AndyP
12th January 2008, 08:01 AM
It's been discussed before, and you're meant to follow it from the 1st hole on the matchplay indexes (which is why you will find them listed separately to the individual hole info on many cards).

That said, I think it's been a general rule that if the two players agree on what they are following beforehand, then it's not really a problem.

markTHEblake
12th January 2008, 08:01 AM
the matchplay index should be followed in the order that you play the course.

because the matchplay index spreads the strokes equally through the round. if you played the index out of order, then its all out of kilter and results in a likely unfair advantage the the lower handicap

goughy
12th January 2008, 08:04 AM
So if you tee off the 10th, you follow the index listed on the 1st nine and vice versa?

AndyP
12th January 2008, 08:05 AM
Yes. Same if you tee off the 14th.

markTHEblake
12th January 2008, 08:08 AM
yeah, Index 18 should always be the first hole you played, even if you start on the 4th hole. Index 1 should always be the 8th hole that you played.
