Gympie Golf club (http://www.gympiepines.com.au) almost went broke a few years ago. Private interests have bought it and bunged a unit complex in the middle of it.

The changes to the course have been quite minor. Google Maps (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=gympie&ie=UTF8&ll=-26.174408,152.648613&spn=0.014116,0.023303&t=k&z=16&om=1) hasnt caught up with the changes yet

Got this pic from the property Sales dept.

The changes are.

- Flipped the 9's around. Instead of finishing with a par 3, now a tough arse par 4, hardest hole on the course
- 13th- was a Par 5 about 450m, now a short par 4.
- 14th - was a 200+m par 3 - gone as its slap bang in the middle of the complex. shame as it was the 2nd toughest hole on the course.
- 17th - new Par 3 in the old Practice fairway. obviously a long walk from 16th green.
- 2nd - was a 480ish Par 5, moved the tee forward a wee bit.

No other changes.

Result must be a change from Par 70 to 69, and only 3 Par 5's that very few good golfers would struggle to reach with irons. But there are still some tough holes out there, namely 3, 7, 9, 11, and 18.

No practice fairway anymore, but still better than a 9 hole course.

Some of those changes were in place when Rusty, jarro and myself played there last Christmas. The new 17 wasn't there though.
The 16th was a joke of a tee position too.

the par 3 17th you mentioned would have been a 110m hole then right?

and you said the 18th was a Par 5?

It was a 420M par 4 monster, so it sounds like they moved that tee back a bit to make it a bit longer, and that would make it near impossible I would think to drive over the crest.

probably a few different ways they could have made that extra hole work, but its not as if making a 110m par 3 shorter was a valid option :-)

I can't remember if the other boys made it over the crest. I know I didn't. I remember because I had to play two balls from the same spot.

Since we played they have made those changes to 13 & 14 that you mentioned.

441m par 5. I can't remember if the other boys made it over the crest.

bloody long way to that crest even when it was a 4. I remember playing a bloke in Pennants there, I didnt reach the green with 2 woods, and he hit a 9 iron to a couple of inches from the hole.

he was a big mother though and i would have only weighed about 55kg back then, I just might hit the ball a bit further now..... I hope.

That Par 5 was a good finishinbg hole i thought. I remember that i drove it down the left hand side and still had a little way to go to get over the crest. The rough was nice and long too so hitting the fairway was a must.

As AndeePee has stated, that 16 th tee they had they was ridiculous.

So whats the latest news from Gympie (Harrison Park)?

I have heard yesterday hasn't been able to sell the units it built, and is asking the members to pay 3 years membership in advance.

Gympie Pines is no longer, members have voted to disolve the club with debts exceeding $160,000, course will/has been bought and is likely to re-open as Cooloola Pines (or something similar) sometime in the near future, with a small golf committee to run golf comps for members and have little or no control over anything else.

gee! So where does the surplus money go, surely the clubhouse and course would have been sold for heaps more than the $160k debt?

The club has been in big trouble for the 2 and a bit years that I have been there. This is a shame as it has so much potential but management are a pack of idiots.

The Gympie golf club is no longer and as far as I am aware GRG (gympie residential something) are going to run it, GRG is the mob who own the villas.

As far as the villas go they are half done and parts of the course look like a construction site. They were planned in stages and at the moment construction can't start on the next stage because they are relyying on the sale of the sale of the previous stage to fund it. They are never going to sell as they are overpriced something shocking.

Here are some news links, Seems that the course was sold to a private company 6 years ago, and the Golf Club then leased the course back off the owners.
But they hadn't been paying the rent. So the Golf Club was given 7 days to pay or be evicted, and they chose to dissolve the club. Gympie will convert to a public golf course. The members are probably forming a 'social club' that will pay green fees just like everyone else. Except Zac gets to play for free!

So Zac what would you change to turn things around in the club ?

I'm not big on the history and have only been around for the last bankrupts e. We don't have a proshop and the left side of the 1st is a practice area. Pat Jones is doing sports days there for the nearby high school and runs clinics and supervised practice at various times. They replaced the green staff and it's taken time but John Love is getting them pretty good now. They have also cleaned up a lot of neglected undergrowth. An unusual feature has always been those blasted strappy grass thinges that will swallow your ball quick smart if you stray. Everyone loves the 18th, they pushed the tee right up the top. It's hilly and uneven but if you don't get greedy it's a great way to finish.
