View Full Version : Forum Tips

I thought I would provide some little tips (useless or not) that are part of the forum functionality.

The first tip is for when you are viewing a list of threads. When you hover the mouse over the envelopes to the left of the threads as shown below, it tells you how many times you have posted in the thread, and the last time you did.

http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/3499/forumview2ji3.jpg
As you probably know, the two numbers on the right are the total amount of posts and total amount of views of the thread by all users.

The different envelopes also have meanings.
http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/6591/threadtypesme3.jpg
A hot thread is a thread that has had 150 views or more OR has 25 or more posts. This is customisable (in fact that post number seems too low).

If you click on a thread replies link when viewing a forum, you are provided with a breakdown of the number of posts by each member.

Thanks AP. I find it quite amusing that for all this time these hyperlinks were staring us in the face and probably nobody has ever clicked on them.Except me, and in some cases only recently. I've never actually read the instruction book.

I found it amusing when Vegas didn't know about the last post button, and was constantly having to scroll through threads to remember where he was up to.

At the top left and bottom left of a list of posts or threads, there is a list of pages you can jump to. However, this list only has links to pages surrounding the current page, and the first and last. To jump to a specific page, select the down arrow on the right, and input the page you want.

It seems that some members aren't aware of the POWER of the Quick Links Dropdown from the header menu bar.
http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/8018/quicklinksdropdownzk9.jpg

New Posts: Displays all threads that have posts in it that you haven't read. There's no real value to this option in this dropdown, as a link already exists in the menu bar.
Mark Forums Read: Marks all threads in all forums as read.
Open Buddy List: Pops up a window with a list of your "buddies" and whether they are online or not. Buddies can be accessed for a quick PM this way also.
User Control Panel: Takes you straight to your User CP. Once again this link already exists in the menu bar.
Edit Signature/Profile/Options: Quick link to these pages.
Private Messages: Another way to get to your messages.
Subscribed Threads: Links to the page with the threads you have subscribed too. I personally subscribe to threads that I regularly look at, but don't want to have to search for, such as, the Open Days and Contact Details threads.
My Profile: Page where you can check yourself out.
Who's Online: See what everyone else is up to (unless they are invisible), as well as how many bloody search engine spiders are on the site.
Sidebar On/Off: Toggle the sidebar on and off.

Who has been rating threads? I don't think it's an overly handy thing to have for this forum (more for help style forums), but someone's been doing some rating.

If you really want to rate something it's on the top right of a thread. You can rate a thread from 5 stars (excellent) down to 1 star (terrible), and I assume it takes an average for the thread rating.

FWIW the Coffee Grinders and Californication threads have been rated as terrible, while the Nambour Open thread is excellent.

AndyP
7th September 2007, 08:53 AM
I hadn't decided if I wanted to keep it or not, as I wasn't sure if it would make the site slow.

Click on the youtube button in the Advanced posting screen http://www.ozgolf.net/forums/images/youtube.gif
Enter a title you want for the clip in the popup dialog box eg Line in the Sand
Enter the code of the youtube video inside the 'yt' tags eg hrBVG4chYvc
Full code {yt="Line in the Sand"}hrBVG4chYvc{/yt}, except with square brackets.hrBVG4chYvc

As discussed in the Forum Upgrade Thread, prefixes can be added to thread titles. At this stage, it has been added to the Pro Shop Forum.

Here's what you do:

Start your thread as you would normally do and select the appropriate thread prefix.
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/9384/prefixpostthreadyk7.jpg
When your transaction is done, you can go back in and edit it via the Advanced Edit mode.

When the thread is submitted, it will look like one of those below.
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/9408/prefixthreadlistjc2.jpg

This should help in filtering through the threads.

For those that don't know, the forum now has the following:

Reciprocal Friendships replacing the buddy list from before
Public Messaging (instead of being private the messages are displayed in a member's profile area)
Social Groups (There's already a couple set up for common interests)

Have a play around and see if it's your thing.

Yes

Form a clique, then request forum moderator to create a subsection that only clique members can post in. Way too easy to do, like 2 mins work maybe.

Then only start a thread in that section.

Or just use the dob button.

Since we love our youtube posts, it's become mucho easier with the updated software.

All you have to do is click the button above the text entry box that looks like a film negative. It is the insert video button and allows you to embed not just youtube, but stuff from other sites/formats as well. Then just post the link address in the box and you are off and running. None of this typing a title in the box, then having to copy only the end of the link and paste it between the square brackets. Look, even I can do it!

I can't say for sure Mike, as Jarro has edited your post before I saw what the original looked like! But it's still not working. The text of it is now right, it should look like this in text format
[video]http://www.youtube.com/watch#!videos=DQtD5VAqu_A[video]
but the youtube direction at the end (the DQtD5VAqu_A) doesn't work. Even if you go to youtube and input that which should go to the video, it says that that video doesn't exist. Try again is all I can say!

I've found a new modification based on something that henno posted (http://www.ozgolf.net/showthread.php/18809-1st-Tee-threads?p=478312&viewfull=1#post478312).

You can now filter the thread view by prefix, by clicking on one of those prefixes.

For example, if you were in the Pro Shop and clicked on the 'For Sale' prefix, it would only show threads that use this prefix. Of course, if people don't use the prefix function, then the filter won't pick it up.

Give it a go!
