Starts on Thursday. Plenty of Aussies in the field. Can we crack it for a win?

Quick rundown of the Aussies here (http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,,22088054-23213,00.html).

I have a feeling O'Hern might make himself heard at this one.

Don't think so County he does not hit it far enough .....especially if the wind gets up.

I tend to agree with Courty's choice and if Scott could could get his putter running hot he would be a good chance.

Is Van de Velde playing ?

no, has an injury apparently. I like Paul Casey, goes OK in majors, it is often about being close enough to ride your luck at this tourney (esp last time it was played here)

FWIW. VdV returned to Carnoustie in 2000 and parred the 18th with Putter for a commercial. took him about 6 attempts from memory, so technically it was not a sound strategy. :-)

Hate to say it but I can't see an Aussie winning this week. Els might be the one, but I do think it may be an European that wins, just not sure who.

I think it will be either Ogilvy or Goosen

Of the Americans, I like Jim Furyk and, Tigger.
Of the Australians: Robert Allenby
Europeans: Soren Hansen

I think it might be a low profile players turn this year, the British Open throws one in now and then.
Go the Aussies anyways ;)

goughy
17th July 2007, 07:28 PM
It'll be Tiger, then he'll also go and win the PGA. That's just the way the year ends. And I just think he's got something for the BO.

Tigger has personal hygeine problems???? ;)

Adam Scott by 5 shots a-la Greg Norman in his breakthrough '86 Open.

Adam Scott by 5 shots a-la Greg Norman in his breakthrough '86 Open.

If the greens aren't crazy-quick, and it becomes a ball-striking battle, he may be a good chance..... but I do think Tiger is most likely the winner at Carnoustie.

If not Eldrick, then I like Els, and maybe even Sergio.

Eag's

Els & lefty were both in ominous form at the Scottish Open last week.
If an Aussie doesn't win it then it would be great to see Els take it out.

That course is a monster in good conditions so expect the first round scores to be ugly.

Tennis is shocking on the radio!!

Serge with the belly putter could be the go'er. Might be the smartest move he's ever made for his putting.

Grunt
20th July 2007, 08:34 AM
Seemed to work out ok so far Goughy. At 6 under he is leading by 2.
Did Norman ever make any comments about belly putters? Just wondering if Greg and Sergio talk golf in their conversations.

markTHEblake
20th July 2007, 09:55 AM
I am a bit dissapointed with the course setup, whilst they went overboard in 1999, they have gone way to far in the opposite direction.

The width of the fairways is about the same but that rough is pathetic. Ol' VdV will be swearing his head off when he notices how little rough there is on 18 :-)

PeteyD
20th July 2007, 10:09 AM
I think the rough has more to do with the weather and the lack of rain they have had Mark. Just like in 99 there had been lots of rain and awesome condition for growing grass, this year it has not been there.

Grunt
20th July 2007, 10:44 AM
No Pete, R & A instructed greenkeepers not to make it like last time. Guess they thought they would make it not as tough but not this easy. It does seem that not everyone is finding it that easy though. Some high scores there.

Geez, i saw daly at -5 and he finished +3, big choke, i would have loved for him to be at the top!

markTHEblake
20th July 2007, 11:00 AM
Carnoustie looks heaps greener than last time, plus the greens are way slower.

but yes, I do remember that it was a good grass growing season last time around, but it is still obvious they have cut the rough way back as well

Grant,

Maybe they did, but those words were fro mthe greenkeeper. There was no way it could have been like last time as the weather would not have permitted the growth. In fact he was lamenting the lack of growth, and I think this is showing.

Pretty sure Serge has dumped Miss N. Maybe Mrs N getting half the fortune digged into serge's predicted inheritance too much.

Sergio might just do it. He looks good so far. A few Aussies are gone already, Baddeley, Hensby, Porter, Bunny, Allenby & Groom

markTHEblake
20th July 2007, 10:07 PM
Have a look at Baddely's scorecard. Only 5 holes over par for 36 holes, but he had some doosies when he did!

just watching last nights golf. my first footage is sergio's approach to the first wich he knocks close. commentators then talk about his chances which they say are slim with his putting.then they see the belly putter and when he sinks it they are pleased with his stroke.

Grunt
20th July 2007, 11:52 PM
Tiger is Human, did you all see his tee shot off the 1st tee tonight? I thought I only did that type of shot.

****ing O'Hern, worst bet I ever made there. Couldn't even be the #1 Aussie.

goughy
21st July 2007, 08:08 PM
You're the dope that bet on him! Don't know why you thought he would win this thing. Don't get me wrong, I like him. But he's not a major winner.

Ducky
21st July 2007, 08:52 PM
I never said he was going to win it, I bet on him to be the #1 placed Australian.

jimandr

Weather is wet but not much breeze. Softish and slowish greens might mean some low scores among the chasers.

But I think this will suit Sergio as well. I'm declaring him home as the winner.

Yet another playoff decides The Open.
Congrats to Padraig Harrington ..... poor old Sergio just couldn't get the job done :(

goughy

Can't breath, can't breath. Collor's too tight.................

As near to, if not a choke. With a 6 shot lead over the pack (short of stricker) they shouldn't have caught him. And to throw it away on the 16th, then in particular the 18th hole is so disappointing. Looks like I was wrong. He must have had a few chats to greggles and something has rubbed off.

My call today - sergio, as young as he is, will never win a major. How he can't produce his ryders play during a major I don't know. I think he may become the greatest ryders cup player of all time for either team. I'm just so sad...

And good on harrington. Couldn't pick a better player to have beaten him. Bet the pommies are loving it!

goughy
23rd July 2007, 05:43 AM
And yes, I know he's not british, but ireland is close to britian, and like we do with any kiwi stars, they'll claim him anyway.

oz
23rd July 2007, 07:29 AM
I was hoping Sergio would pull this one off..... But good play from the Irishman.

I think if Sergio can build on his consistency with the Belly Putter, I believe he will win one soon. He is so solid tee-to-green, he will contend again if the flat-stick doesn't count him out.

Eag's
23rd July 2007, 07:47 AM
Great to see Harrington win, he is a top player and was due to break through for a major win :smt023
Pity Sergio couldn't go all the way, but this might be the turning point in his career.
