View Full Version : What would be better, stiffer shaft or bigger head?

I play a 983e which has a 350cc head and stock stiff Fujikura. When I swing at say 85-90% it's long and straight, but when I really have a crack at it control goes out the window.
Should I just go to a higher cc driver for more forgiveness or could replacing the stiff with an x-flex in the 983 save it?

It's usually the shaft. FWIW, I used a 983K once with the stock Fuji shaft and it felt nice as long as I swung very smoothly. When I tried to hit it a bit harder, it was all over the place.

Have you tried a 905S? Similar shape & flight, but 400cc. Cheap as chips on ebay.

Stiffer shaft and better head.

I also had the 983K with stock stiff fuji... great club... my only control problems were big pushes now and then.

I went from that to an X460 Tour and now to a 905R with Fuji stiff that really works.

Definitely the shaft. My R510TP came with a stiff Fuji Tour Platform 27.3. I had the same problem: it was fine with an easy swing, but dog's breakfast when going after it. I reshafted with an X-stiff (with soft tip section) and it is a reformed club.

My god - I can't believe this made five posts and no double-entendre wisecracks yet. Only on a golf forum could you have a thread title like that, and get serious answers.

I thought about a wisecrack. Especially since the last post I read before this thread was speirsey's comments that jono's driver should be long in the right hands!!!!

I refrained ;)

ummm... a quick question.... if it is long and straight at 85-90%.... what is the problem? Does anybody really go at it 100% in a competition round (except long drive comps)? If you want a new driver, just do it. We ho's don't need explanations.

That was pretty innocuous... Disappointing even, by this places standards.

this is surely a question for the ladies?

My answer would be to get a bigger driver and an X-stiff shaft.

The X is a godsend, has taken the left side compeltely out of play for me, which is a remarkable turnaround.

I just can't be direct and spit it out like 69 would. I'm too polite.

The thing to do is to go to a demo day that has a pro shop with a cpm Machine, hit all the drivers and when you find a driver with the right combo of shaft flex and head ( loft, size).
Then get them to check the cpm of the club and order a driver with that cpm that suites your swing speed.
If the driver arrives and the cpm is wrong send it back.
Here is a good example of problems with cpm in shaft flex that I have encounted.
When I had my shop I checked 4 titleist 905k's with the same stiff flex shaft.( fuji)
they all read different in CPM's with a difference of up to 23 cpm. Between 245 and 268 cpm in difference.
So you may hit one that feels really good and order one and the one you get is completely different. Shaft flex may read Stiff but could be Reg or even X flex.
If you can tape up and buy the one you hit at the range, this is the best way to get what you want.
If you are a swinger than a softer shaft will work for you but if you are a hitter go to a stiffer shaft and it will help you to hit it straighter BUT YOU MAY LOOSE A FEW METRES.
Hope this help's

If you play at a course like Wodonga with the big open fairways then yeah I would like to go at 100%. If I really let fly with the 983, when I'd be generating 120+mph swing speed, it can't handle it. The ball goes left and short. Frustrating.
Thanks for the replies, particularly posts #2, 5, 15 and 17 :D. I hadn't thought about shaft cpm. There's a Titleist/Cobra demo day on this Saturday, maybe I should go to that instead of Spiersy's "seeya later" day and then post an apology in AndyP's 'First tee etiquette' thread ;)

No worries. If you are swinging at 120+, unless you are very smooth, you are going to want to go with X-stiff, anyway. Sounds like a few demos may be in order.
