Have you ever broken par in a standard par 72 course?

No, and I'm not sure that you will get an answer in the affirmative from too many on this forum.

Why for a par 72 only though? What's wrong with breaking par on a par 68 or 73?

glad to say I've done it 2 weekends ago (71)... :D

was flirting with the magical 69, until I decided to take a brainfart with 2 holes to go...

but have broken par (70) 3 times on my home course in the past 16 (less maybe) months...

No.........never...........don't think i ever will..........but if I do I will run down the 1st hole on my home course buck naked singing the Collingwood theme song. That's even more scary than it sound - cos i reckon it'll take me till I'm about 70 to play that well ( and no.....that is NOT in the next five years!!!)
But to all of you that have - well done ( and could you please send me a photo of yourself bucknaked on your home course - singing the Collingwood theme song is optional!!!!)

FG - I'm with you - I don't think I could even imagine to aspiring to breaking par on a whole course. I'm ecstatic when I make a par - I've only had 3 birides in my lifetime and I've done the snoopy happy dance each time. Imagine what would happen with the hole course under par - I don't know if I'd do the naked run down the 1st - but I'd probably hire a sky writer!

Kee
23rd September 2004, 10:34 AM
I also can't imagine breaking par anytime soon. I'm happy that I make Par on occasions. A few weeks ago I was extremely pleased that I make like 5 bogeys in a row. I've also only made 3 birdies so far and everyone of them was a fluke.

Hang on.. is this the Tiger Woods thread?

go for smaller goals...like 3 pars in a row...
once that's done, 6 pars in a row...
etc etc
it gets easier if you set realistic goals... :D

afterall...the number of times I've played to par or broken par for 18 holes, not once did I do 18 straight pars (my PERFECT round)...

Don't you just take it one shot at a time?

Kee
23rd September 2004, 11:43 AM
I've done 3 pars in a row a couple of times. I find the problem with me is that in between a couple of good holes there is then a massive blowout on the next few like an 8 on a par 4 or a 6 on a par 3 which really kills the overall score.

But I enjoy the challenge :D .

amanda
23rd September 2004, 11:53 AM
My current goal is to play 18 holes of bogey golf - while making 2-3 pars (par 3s) - still gives me room for my usual shocker!

not anymore...

my train of thought now is as follows on my home course:

1-3 (par)
4-5 (-1)
6-8 (par or +1)
9 (par)

10 (par or +1)
11-12 (par)
13-16 (par or +1)
17-18 (par)

does that make sense???

I think it's a good idea Mau. There are holes which I seem to be making par on more often - so my goal is more towards birdie. But others - I'm happy to make double!

I figure here u r saying u have more chance of making par on the par 3's. I'm the opposite. I tend to par the par 5's more.........on my home course anyway. The par 3's are horrors......except for one of them.

cheers...
for me, setting a target like that does two things...

first - if I have a crap tee shot, then it forces me to play the smart shot out...afterall, it's not how pretty you look getting there, it's how few... :D

second - setting smaller targets every few holes gets me concentraing easier and I'm more focused during a particular stretch of holes...with my hcp, I can't afford to make silly mistakes...and yup, I take the same approach even if I'm playing social golf...

I would hate to play bad at the start, thinking it's okay, plenty of holes left to recover later - it rarely happens!!!

I hope to dig this thread up in a year or 2 post a yes.. for now my best streak was -1 after 6 holes of the back 9 of my home track to make the turn at 39.. ended up with 84* over 18 holes ( not comp gold hence the * doesnt count.)

My first time was as a 14 yo and I shot 67, 4 under at Mackay in the early eighties.

I had 5 under at Beaudesert one day, and was 7 under after 11, but choked a bit. I also had a 71 at Kooralbyn in the Copperhead and won the comp and got invited back for the final.

Dude, Where's my Par?

Courty,
That is a blight on your game... :)

I have done it a few times..... Hit the worst putt in the world to not do it around Reddie bay last year.... I was chance at Moonah as well, got robbed on the 17th. All the rest have been at MWP or Windaroo. ( Home town Hero )... I remember having a putt for 69 at MWP (par 72) when I was 16, I was sure it was going in. Charged it about 8ft past and was rattled that it actually missed, walked of with 71 :(

Once. Two under at Cairns in a Boxing Day comp, back in the day when life was less complicated (i.e. no spouse and kids).

It is the highlight of my golfing endeavors to date and looks likely to remain that way. :(

not yet, even par 72 at SCR is my best. Had a couple of 71 (par 70) at my home course. Shooting under par will be my goal this year!! Got a bub due early June, so should be back practicing in late August getting ready for Club Champs.

66 around Fairfield (Par 69) and 69 around Cabramatta (Par 70). Have played a few 9 hole unders in WA but still yet to go under for 18. Best in comp is 74 at The Vines - Lakes (Par 72).

Moe Norman

Yes, 3 times.

69 at Indooroopilly on the East Course
71 at Ipswich in 1999 (so the old layout)
66 at Wolston Park in a tournament in 1999

Indro doesn't really count as it wasn't in a comp.

Ipswich was my only official competition round under par,

Wolston Park was in the Inter College Golf, so it was a proper tournament - but not AGU.

shot square around St.Lucia a few times, and if it weren't for matchplay, probably would have been under at least once.

Have only broken par twice for 18 but sadly not in competition play.
1st time was Oct 2006 Rich River East 70 par 72. Was 2 over on the front 9 and 4 under on the back with one in the water and a lip out on 18 from 6 foot preventing it from being better.
2nd time was Dec 2012 Adrossan (Sand Greens) 69 par 70.

Have shot even par 5 times in comp.

I feel I've under achieved re: breaking par considering the amount of years I've played off around 4-5 handicap. I have a number of golf friends that have broken par in comp and haven't been any lower than 6-8 handicaps.

BenM
10th April 2013, 03:45 PM
Nope. I'm too inconsistent - my PB is still 77! And I have shot that quite a few times.

I've not even broken par for 9 (though I've been -1 after 8 a couple of times).

Have shot under par for 9 holes quite a few time but, failed to back up on the other 9 (or startup in some cases, then come good). Have shot even par around Cairns a few times & can see where in each round I probably should have shot under par. Hell, I even shot 76 around Paradise Palms once which whilst not even par is one of my best rounds of golf ever.

I hope to achieve this feat before too much longer but, I struggle with either getting it together or keeping it together..... Most frustrating is when you turn in 8 or 9 over and finish 6 or 7 over... that has happened to me a few times & I still can't figure out what suddenly went right for me!!

You may get defensive rather than aggressive or wanting to go lower. I had this issue when younger.

I have usually found that when I bolt from the gate I usually crash and burn, because I start thinking about the end score and the newspaper headlines "chopper shoots 59". One time Twice in a week I was 4 under after 4, and gave them all back by 9.

My better scores are when I sneak up on them, like 1 under through 12, and then grab a couple of birdies and before you know it you have a putt on 18 for 5 red.

The key in maintaining these good rounds is to stop thinking about your score. That's not saying dont know your score because thats impossible you just got to learn to not fixate on it.

Go a bit Buddhist, think of Boobies or chat about non golf stuff, whatever floats your boat.

The higher par of 73, should be easier in theory to shoot a better score, as you will have more par 5's or less par 3's.
