Hopefully I can get some first hand, inside the ropes, info this year......If I can get the time off I've decided to pay whatever I have to to get over and check it out.........The boss' baby was born this morning, so one week off should be plenty for him shouldn't it?

Are you going to carry the bag for your brother?

Speirsy11
5th June 2007, 07:41 PM
If I'm there and he wants me to I will. I'd love to but if he has someone he thinks would work better then I respect that 100% and would likely prefer to chill out and have a beer while enjoying the golf at one heck of a golf course......

Been reading about the club and course in the latest GD. Interesting. You'll have a ball.

Almost as importantly, who is going to win?

I have also read an Oakmont article, which suggests the course will be much more open than the normal tree-lined American course.

I would imagine the rough will still be super-tough and the greens ultra-quick.

Without any real idea, maybe this means the best short game wins? Is that Tiger?

If Phil is injured, even slightly, I don't like him. Ernie hasn't regained form, Retief missed the cut in Wales.

Could be a straight hitter like Furyk, Verplank, Pampling!

Ogilvy showed form last week. He could be worth a wager to repeat.

There, I've named my top 5.

Speirsy11
5th June 2007, 11:26 PM
Tiger is the favorite....Has to be.....

Ernie won last time it was at Oakmont, so I think he's a good wager for a top 10, maybe top 5.

Furyk suits that place and is from the area....

I just love Ogilvy's game, I think he's always a good bet in big events.

I think you need to find someone who can hit his irons the right distance and really lag putt well. The greens are supposed to be SO fast that if you get on the wrong side of them you are lucky to 3 putt.......So my picks are Tiger, David Howell, Immelman and Adam Speirs ;)

goughy
6th June 2007, 06:55 AM
The greens are supposed to be SO fast that if you get on the wrong side of them you are lucky to 3 putt....... ;)

I read that members don't do gimme's at this course. There's no such thing, not even from a foot! Some greens are too sloped etc for the stimp meter to read effectively, especially when it gets towards a reading of 15. Double cutting, sometimes twice a day adn triple cutting the greens is the norm, and they roll them often too. Just think of a 10 pin bowling lane that runs down hill!!!

Fishman Dan
6th June 2007, 09:21 AM
Recent form taken into account, I don't think you can't discount Badds.com. His putting has him there or thereabouts all year so far (10th in FedEx Cup points?). His style of "One look then hit" could be just what the doctor ordered on these nightmare greens.

Jarro

Ogilvy will be my pick 8)

6th June 2007, 11:25 AM
Looking at Scott's Game last week I just feel as if he is striking the ball so well if his putter works he will go very well.

Bruce
6th June 2007, 11:52 AM
Rob,

Do you think Adam (or yourself) would be able to write an after action report on his experiences playing the one of the biggest events of his life - with more to come hopefully. I'd really like to hear about his mindset out on the course, what he thinks about how the course is playing to compare it with how we see it on telly.

I hope you can share a real insider's view of the event.

oz
6th June 2007, 03:09 PM
Badds.com will get lost in the rough late on Thursday, and disappear for the remainder for the tournament.... Narrow fairways will do him in, in my opinion.

My Aussie smokey would be O'Hern. Drives it straight enough, and has a sharp short game. If he can hold his nerve over the important putts, he could contend.

I'd love to see Ogilvy repeat..... just to silence those critics that say he won last year, by default.

Of the non-Aussies, I like Goosen's chances.... he plays fast greens as well as anybody.

I'll go a step further than that.... If scott's putter is on he'll win. On current form he's best tee to green player out there by a margin. He has to hole putts for 4 days to win though, and that is where he'll stuggle - but if he does, IF, he'll just win!!

PeteyD
6th June 2007, 05:27 PM
I like Badds and Ogilvy. Scott is always a chance but he needs to play for 4 rounds. I have 2 x $50 bets to put on this so need to choose wisely.

Speirsy11

If you want the winner in the "Would win if they could actually putt" US Open look no farther than Garcia. His ball striking is so good it's scary....How else could someone that putts it like that be so close in so many majors?

Bruce, if I get there I'll do it..........but not looking good as of right now......

goughy
6th June 2007, 07:12 PM
Garcia is scary good at everything but putting. I love to watch him play. I read somewhere that he seems to take the opposite approach with his putting. He's all natural with his ball striking, but with his putting he over analyses and worries too much about technique. Maybe he needs to find the spirit in his putting rather than making it happen.

The crazy thing is he lead the TOUR in putting his first year as a pro......Then something got in his head and it is ugly to watch now....And where he was not great as a rookie, driving accuracy, he is now awesome. He stripes every club in the bag to the point where the only one he doesn't hit within 10 feet of his target is his putter......

Grunt
7th June 2007, 07:25 AM
Read an article somewhere that had Ogilvy saying when he played in his younger days against Sergio, he could nail any putt from within 15 feet. Will have to try and find it or a link.

Channel 10 has the us open this year - starting at 3am on friday morning to 9am, same on saturday. It starts at 4am to 9am on Sunday. So 5 and 6 hours coverage should be good for close to 3 hours each day of golf. I'll take that.

would love nothing more than to see Geoff Ogilvy win this thing back-to-back (oh and Lefty to shoot +45) to silence the critics.

If that can't happen, it'd be nice for Adam Scott or Sergio Garcia to get that monkey off their backs.

C'mon Geoff!

Gotta love Cabrerra don't you .... first he hits a 330 odd yard drive down the 470yard par 4 9th (his 18th) .... next he knocks a SW to 2 feet, and then drains the putt.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out Philbie!!!

Considering his whinge about the course earlier on. I get to watch maybe 4 golf tournaments a year, and I don't enjoy watching them hack it around, no doubt about it. But he's on the same course as every one else. Suck it up!

Wanted Luke Donald to make the cut, but Lefty to miss it.

Loved hearing how the course caused his injury....nothing to do with spending 2 weeks of 10 hour days there planning for it and hitting about 10,000 shots out of the rough...

Sure, the rough wouldn't have helped the situation, but a man's gotta know his limitations.

Tiger looked shattered after his final par. This is definately the one that got away, he couldn't buy a putt after being on the most Greens In Reg all week. To lose by 1 shot when it's all said and done, he'll be hurting for some time to come.

Boonie's call for Furyk wasn't far off the pace either. A straight hitter from the local area shouldn't be overlooked obviously.
