Saw a post of Fishman Dan's about driver turnover on this site... Thought it would be interesting to hear how many drivers people here go through when looking for "the one".

I'll fess up first. I'm no saint, but I'm sure I'm not the worst.

since I started in 1990-ish...

1990 PGF Aristocrat Persimmon (cracked)
1990-???? TM Tour Driver
1992-???? Palm Springs midsize
<mainly used a Callaway 3+ as a driver during this period...>
1996-1998 Callaway Big Bertha WarBird
1998-2000 Callaway Biggest Big Bertha
2000-2003 Titleist 975D
2003-2005 Titleist 975JVS
2005-2006 Titleist 905S
2006-2006 Titleist 905R
2006-???? Titleist 905S (same as previous)

So, other than a brief experiment last year, i've usually kept a driver for around 2 years before getting the "itch". Must admit, I'm getting the itch again....

OK, In the last 2 years I have had the following.
Nike Sumo
Nike SQ Tour
Nike Ignite 460
Ping G2
Ping G5
905R
FT-3
J33r 460
510TP
510 TP Tour
TM 300 Tour
R7 425TP
R7460 TP Tour
Cleveland Comp 460

The longest serivng of the above would be between the j33r and the Sumo. The sumo is currently in the bag and going very well BUT I am tempted by the D1!

Rather than this site being the culprit it's the godawful manfacturers putting out a new gimmick stick every 3 months that pulls us suckers in.

Now as above I have used a few myself, but I am lucky in that I tend to get into a much longer 'love affair' with my driver as it is normally (Kooindah withstanding) the best stick in my bag and using the same one again and again gives me confidence.

Any Titty D2's for sale? ;)

Hmmm prior to joining this site just over 12 months ago, I had a Cobra Persimmon driver in the old Days, and I got an early Metal driver (1.5 wood if I remember correctly). And then I had a Cobra Titanium driver for a number of years (one of the ugly original ones).

In the last 12 months I have gone through at least:
Dodgy T7 Thing (copy of R7)
Burrows Mac
TM R580XD with various shafts in it
TM R5 Dual
TM R7 Shallow with ProLite
TM R510 TP With X Stiff
Cobra 414 Comp x 2 (1 Reg 1 Stiff)
Still have:
Callaway FT-3 tour
TM R5 TP with Diamana
And possibly looking for a 905r with VS Proto in it

this site is the debil.

1996: Unknown Persimmon brand 1.5 wood for first 6 months of play.
1997-1998: Prosimmon that came as part of a set
1998-2002: Callaway Warbird 9 deg firm shaft
2002-2006 : Callaway GBB2 9 deg firm
2006-? : Titleist 905S 9.5 deg, Proforce V2 Stiff.

I really struggle to justify buying anything less than a couple of years old, never spent more than $250 on a driver, so that takes the new ones out of the equation for a couple of years.

You sure thats a driver?

I had one that i inherited with my first set, it was a tiny black plastic head, heavy sole and loft of a 5 wood.

I do know that the had different types over several generations of golf, starting in the 60's i think. They still make them. Dad loved the things and had several different types. But I never saw one that wasnt a 5 wood :)

Bought my first set of new clubs in May/04. The set didn't include a driver so I bought a $50 Dunlop from Amart. Then I bought TM R5d which has served ok till now. Yesterday I bought 2nd hand Hogan something with an Aldilla senior flex shaft [ shaddup Blake] for $135. I played the front 9 twice with it whilst demmoing and only missed 1 fairway. Lost 10/15 mtrs, but on the short stuff is where I would rather be.

The next thing to do is link all these lists together to track some individual clubs that have done the rounds.

I reckon the SMT Spectrum that my old man is currently using to great effect (he is longest driving 60+ year old at his club) is on a few lists.

Bruce - the SMT Spectrum came from MacLeod to me, to Mike, then ??

I had to make a decision at the time and probably made the wrong one. The shaft in that club when I had it was superb (AccuFlex Icon v2?).

I got it off Pinglauncher from memory.

Could it possibly be the same Spectrum that I demoed (via Tez)?

Correction - I got it off Macleod.

10* Spectrum with a GT500 shaft in it. Very dark purple shaft - almost black.

Now that we have started a thread for just Drivers, how about we do the
same for 3 Woods, Irons & putters ;)

Then again, that list could go on for 10 years :)

Why don't we do a "who did you buy your driver from" thread ;)

I also used to have a lovely Slazenger number from K-mart, and who knows what in the mixed set before that.

2004-2007 SMT DeepBore 455

Just counting the drivers I've had for a significant period of time (ie. excluding those I bought to try then returned/sold straight away)

1. Hogan Apex - This persimon driver rawked. Loud satisfying "crack" at impact. Sort of Cobra equivalent in the persimon world ... I used this for many years until the plastic hosel broke.

2. Cobra Stainless Deepface - The same one that Tiger used to win the 97 Masters. What a great driver this was. Solid, solid, solid. It outperformed a lot of the newer Titanium drivers that were being introduced to the market. (eg. TM Ti Bubble, GBB, BBB, etc) IMO, anyway. 8)

3. Bang P2 - The driver that converted me to the component world. I ended up cracking the head along the crown, but it was the first Titanium driver that I kept for any significant period of time. Solid sounding, low spin ... great driver.

4. SMT Spectrum - Another great component driver head. Again very solid off the face. Best of the SMT bunch, IMO.

5. TM R7 TP - The most expensive driver I had ever bought. Felt a bit tinny, was long off the tee but a little bit inconsistent for me.

7. Cobra F Speed - The loudest driver I had ever bought. Pretty long off the tee. Hook biased. Sold to a slicer ... ;)

8. Aurora - The lowest spinning driver I've ever used PROVIDED it's hit on a certain spot (slightly above middle and slightly towards the toe). Not very forgiving and when hit below the middle, the increase in backspin is quite dramatic.

I wouldn't mind more forgiveness, but pretty happy with the Aurora at the moment.

I've still got it...well my son has got it but he's more interested in girls and soccer at the moment so it doesn't get much use. Great driver that will get another run in the bag before too long.
