hmm Dunno if I can get the day off. I was thinking of the Thursday before the McLeod cup as I have that week off. I assume you are talking the 22nd March?

Any chance of the 12th April? (or maybe the 5th)

Did you buy A ndy's irons?

Good to hear you guys are going, will be good to see how it has improved since you were last there. Hopefully it will be glowing and the doubts about hte condition of the course that people had will be long gone.

Did not think of that Dion, you Bastards no golf just walk around the course in no particular order and give us a report.

PeteyD

Depends. Are you getting better? ;)

If I play, then we'll make it a rematch. Have you played there before?

kpac
5th March 2007, 03:55 PM
Yep played there before, think it is an awsome course. but unfortunatelly can not claim to have figured it out. Very tough holes out there.

Heard from a mate on the weekend it is in better condition now than when i visited in december. And i thought it was pretty good then, only a little bit of sunburn on the greens.

Interesting you should say that, as a few OZgolfers played it together a month or so ago, and came back with mixed reports, especially the condition of the greens.

I guess it's only fair we play a course where you have more knowledge, after we played my 'local'.

you're getting scared aren't you andy

i have played it anywhere near enough to claim course "knowledge", but my swing is comming along a bit now, i'm itching to get to play a comp to work on my handicap. Have a comp on sunday but it's an ambrose, so that isn't going to help me.

Probably waste it on this trip and bomb out during the champs big time! hehe

Round of 71 net including an 11 on 10. Mind you I am off a big ass handicap. This time I am thinking of taking a 9 iron off the tee.

dc68
5th March 2007, 04:25 PM

Don't worry about those details kpac I have just booked for 4 under Clarke.

Try to get a comp round in somewhere, so your handicap kicks into action (assuming it will).

Perfect mate, and I won't forget to slip you some $$ for petrol.

Beauey Macca's for brekky?

PeteyD
5th March 2007, 04:37 PM
Sounds like the Go.

Changes to Layout for AP (kpac would have seen these)- 1 and 18 are totally different (well 1 still uses half the old hole and the same green). 14 is longer off the back. Other wise pretty much how I remembered it from long time ago.

kpac

quizzed my club and they said, if i hand in 5 cards i'll be sweet to have a legit handicap for all comps, but they said as it is, it shouldn't be a problem. I've got a couple of cards to hand in so i should up and running properly soon.

AndyP
5th March 2007, 04:45 PM
Need someone to sign some for you. I'll quite happily sign a few nett 60s for you......

Petey, I can't really remember much of the course at all, although it may come back bit by bit, when I go around it again.

dc68
5th March 2007, 04:55 PM
I will tell you where to hit it mate. ;)

PeteyD
5th March 2007, 05:01 PM
It's pretty easy on most holes except 6, 7, 9

kpac
5th March 2007, 05:13 PM
add the 3rd to that list aswell. I think the front nine is great. 7 and 8 are great holes.

PeteyD
5th March 2007, 05:25 PM
3rd is hard but where to hit it is pretty obvious I would have thought. Most of the course is hard for that matter. I had a few lucky breaks on that round earlier in the year, and it is a course you need some luck on to do well. 16 would probably be the only easy hole on the course.

kpac

Well for a high handicapper you must of had a good day out, cause i sure can't make it around the corner from the back marker on the 3rd. There's no way i get a look at the green :( , And the direction might be pretty obvious off the tee, but it's a nice surprise when you find it drops away into the sh|t on the right once you find your ball. Good hole with a great green that one!

PeteyD
5th March 2007, 05:38 PM
Good point. As a high handicapper I play it like a 5 as I have no hope of making the corner. The drop to the right is nasty. And Jarro did call it a career round, I had a very lucky day.

OK had a looksee on Google Earth (this is one of about 5 holes you can see). The landing area for the drive ends at around 245 m, and you can't actually see that from the tee. The only safe line at that length is straight over the bunker which is not obvious and even not that safe.

A 240 m drive to the right of the bunker leaves you about 140 m out, but all uphill and between trees. I'll bring a camera and try and do a review of sorts for everyone for the champs.

dc68
8th March 2007, 11:00 AM
Goneski I can't play. Bloody work.

PeteyD
8th March 2007, 11:04 AM
So Anyone else up to this? Jarro? AP you gonna make it?

AndyP
8th March 2007, 11:55 AM
AP you gonna make it?Yes, I should be able to now. The tee time can't be any earlier than 7:30a though, as I need to drop Mitchell off at daycare. The closer to 8am or after the better for me.

AP dilly dallying.
That's a bit harsh. Due dates of babies aren't an exact science (unless you cheat and get a C-section).

PeteyD
8th March 2007, 12:01 PM

i recon you must have nut's the size of grapefruits aswell, you big man you!
I'm in brisbane city tonight actually and will have a couple of setlers if that counts.
True story: The last time i played kooralbyn, i had a cricket club dinner the night before, got shit faced and had to get up at 5 for a 10to 7 tee time out there (thankfully got a lift, iwas still pissed as a newt!) got changed in the car, and ordered an emergency stop at cunungra for a spew and a pie (needed to soak up some) Needless to say i was pretty relaxed out on course that day, slow movements everywhere as the hangover kicked in. i also crashed the cart going between the 1st and 2nd (i'm still pleading my case with the rest of the group, i maintain that the tyres of the cart were to blameforlack of traction)
I will never play in that condition again if i can help it!
So everyone is all set for this one. we got a patch of rain last night on the coast which hopefully wouldhave made the range and have it looking tip top.

AndyP
21st March 2007, 09:02 AM
Looking forward to it. I'm ashamed to admit that I'll probably be popping into the range today for a quick hit. I haven't played since our last match.

21st March 2007, 09:09 AM
I will never play in that condition again if i can help it!

haha, i did the same thing once at a HS reunion. drank till about 4am, never slept at all and then played golf at 11am at Twin waters after about 15 coffees.

nearly passed out every time i picked the ball out of the hole, dry wreached and burped all the way round, slept in the cart between shots.

absolutely ripped it off the tee all the way round, and hit my irons flawlessly. If not for a flubbed pitch shot on the first and 2 shocking 3 putts at the end it would have been the perfect round of golf.....(ie no bogies)

however i will never play in that condition again. hurt far too much.

Dave, Pete, Andy, thanks for the day, was an enjoyable hit all things considered (although i didn't expect as much after the 1st!)
Good company,
Good course,
some Good golf,
shit-house greens.
Not a bad day all up.

Jarro
22nd March 2007, 06:24 PM
.. so the greens were still crappy 'eh

kpac
22nd March 2007, 06:27 PM
freshly corred and sanded (which obviously only comes in chicken shit form out that way)
I just p|ssed us off that the pro shop didn't so much as let us know. You'd expect discounted green fees the way the greens were. I'm going to write a letter of complaint, wont get me far, but someone needs to tell them they are doing reputation no favours by not informing patrons of course condition

AndyP
22nd March 2007, 06:46 PM
You're right, kpac, it was still a bloody good day despite the un-green greens. (albeit long, 6am-4pm travel + golf)

We played on four different types of greens on the day.
Green with dirt/sand/rocks/shit dumped on it.
The same greens, but the dirt/sand/rocks/shit had been swept and spread evenly, maybe a little compacted.
Then were those greens that had the sprinklers on while we were playing, so we were putting through wet dirt/sand/rocks/shit.
And the 18th was untouched as it was a newer green, but it was far from perfect.
I used my wedge on the second green, instead of chipping.
How they can be doing all this work to greens in the middle of a comp is beyond me. And to not tell us beforehand!!!!! I'll be sending an email.

In the Copperhead comp all markers are taken right back. One member of ground staff got a little carried away on the long par 3 5th. He took it so far back, that your backswing hit the shrubs behind. There were only a couple of places where it didn't, but it was still distracting.

Gee there are some tough holes out there. The 10th which was at least a 200m carry from the tee was scary, as were some of those par 3s.
I finished the front nine thinking that the course wasn't that long. It got a lot longer on the back nine, and it was hard work, as far as the golf was concerned.

dc might like to recall his play on the par 5 12th(?). It was a bit Tin Cup-esque.

Thanks for the day, boys.

Jarro

Did they have the correct yardage sign up for the 14th ?

AndyP

Did they have the correct yardage sign up for the 14th ?
There was no yardage sign for the blacks on the 14th. Although it looked like it used to say 160m when it is in fact many more.

BrisVegas
22nd March 2007, 08:43 PM
So lads, what's the latest opinion of Kooralbyn as our champs venue??

Reckon it'll be in decent shape by then???

Jarro
22nd March 2007, 08:59 PM
Dion, when i was there with the lads earlier this year, i spoke to a greenkeeper who said that they'd be working their arses off trying to get the place in decent nick.

By the sounds of it, they're falling short :(

Still a long way to go to the Champs though...

PeteyD
22nd March 2007, 09:17 PM
The course is in much better nick than January, except we have no idea about the greens though with all the frigging sand (there were no holes that a buggy could fall into though and they seemed a lot smoother, but who knows). It certainly looks like they are trying to bring it back to something decent.

The fairways were much greener. I did take photos ad you should be able to see that. Dave and I will be heading back again in May/June, and hopefully the greens won't have been cored and sanded.

Might have been nice if they had done the work early in the morning instead of as we were playing. Sprinklers are very annoying when you are putting.

Oh yea thanks for the day all. The match play was good to watch, kpac with a big comeback on the back 9. Some good golf by everyone and some crap golf by everyone.

PeteyD
22nd March 2007, 09:31 PM
Yea I think the groundskeepers wanted to wet the chicken crap down

AndyP
22nd March 2007, 09:36 PM
Geezuz what sort of a backyard operation is this ?
Sprinklers on during the copperhead....and during the day when its hot...ffs.
Yep, pretty much spot on midday the sprinklers were going. Some of them weren't even operating properly, and just dumping water all in one spot around the sprinkler head.

Sounds like a pretty dodgy operation out there.

Pete, do you really think the place had improved that much since we were there last time ?

AndyP

Petey, have you got the scores?

PeteyD
22nd March 2007, 10:03 PM
Well Jarro, I didn't think it was that bad last time mate except a couple of greens and they are obviously trying to sort that out. But the course was definately greener and they are certainly working on it. Still reckon it will be a great venue for the champs. Like everywhere it needs a wet autumn though. I am pretty upset about the greens, put me right off my game!! hehe

Doing the maintanance while we were playing in a comp was pretty bad, and extremely annoying:smt013 . Much bad karma on the groundstaff. I think part of it has to do with the fact that it is a resort course and not a club. They also need to fix those sprinkler heads, although there was evidence of work on the irrigation stuff in the 4th where they had dug some stuff out.

No, didn't write the scores down and they have golflink but apparently do not know how to use the computer yet :smt013 . From memory nett scores were

AndyP 77
DC68 79
kpac 83
PeteyD 86

Something like that. The order is correct.

I did however pick upa real nice shirt and half a dozen Pro Vs.

Are you kidding me??? Some guy off 11 played to 3, and had a nett 66. On those greens!!!!! Did he play at 6am, and the put the dirt on afterwards?

CCR was 74, despite an ACR of 75.

Good to see they put the cards in though. I'm back off 11. :(

And it looks like kpac's handicap is now normal and active. See if you can lose a couple of shots at Nudgee for me, will you?

I'd have a big question mark over that!!! Anyone off 11 that can play to 3 off the black markers out there is having and absolute day out to start with, not to mention the fact you'd have to be houdini to read the roll off the duck shit on those greens. Who ever it was is having a good flog of themselves me thinks.

nick off, you get an extra shot already! it was hard enought to reel you in as it was!

I have made mention of the social group booking.

Here's an extract of the reply that both Kent and I have received:

Firstly, I served you personally in the Golf Shop yesterday morning, our policy is to advise all players WHEN BOOKING, about the green renovations as most then wish to defer to a later date. Obviously you weren't informed when booking, so this matter will be discussed with the relevant staff member. I apologise for not mentioning it in the shop as I assumed you had be informed!

We are obviously working hard on getting the greens back into shape. This renovation, we are putting the highest grade and volume of fertilisers available onto the putting surfaces to prepare them for winter. We are one of only a few courses in Qld that has "Bent" grass greens which require water during the day when renovating which explains why the sprinklers have come on during the day however, the greenstaff are supposed to water around the players. I will discuss the points you raised about the sprinklers and the 5th Tee markers with our new Course Superintendant.

The scores yesterday were certainly lower than normal ,so most found the greens easier to putt on. One of the 7.00am group had nett 71 off a handicap of 3.

I'm sure you can appreciate that we have done a much heavier renovations
than in previous years to raise the quality of the greens to a higher standard. Obviously you weren't advised of this renovating programme which is why I would like to invite your group back for another round as my guests. If you give it at least 3 weeks, you will certainly notice a huge improvement since last December.

I couldn't ask for more from the reply than that.

you fast typer andy, i was about to post the same reply

I also responded to Barrys response to say that, albeit a dissapointing day yesterday, we did commend the obvious effort being put into the course.

So when do we give it another shot boys....

So when do we email Barry about the architectural faults of the first?

I wouldn't accept that.
Get him to throw in a coupla cartons for the champs...chilled too.

Maybe part of the reason ppl don't care about their customers <---- likely some old whiners!

haha,

I agree andy, give it a month to settle the greens down because i'd like to take a couple of snaps to show the bent greens looking nice. There is nothing better than when they are lush. So next visit they have no excuses   i was giving KV the benifit of the doubt for condition this time.

I'd be happy with the effort put into his reply. He certainly explained everything that happened well, and explained that steps will be taken to resolve any of the 'hiccups'.

well now it is clear why the green are such a handful. bent greens out there would be a nightmare to maintain through summer.

hopefully playing the camps at the beginning of summer the greens will be in good nick cause they would have had ( hopefully) a long winter of conditions they like.

Terry.

Cheers to Pete, Ap and Kent for a very pleasant game of golf.
As has been said earlier some good golf and some shite. As for my "tin cup" Mr P.... the tree kept moving!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

As far as the course was concerned I had no complaints apart from the obvious.. the greens. Was absolutelty filthy with the staff for not advising me of reno's when I made a booking.(Nice work in geeting us a credit P.)
Had a good day anyways, and learnt where not to hit it on a couple more holes.
