Callaway Golf Company (NYSE:ELY)
today announced it has signed a long-term contract with reigning
Masters champion Phil Mickelson to play its golf clubs
and golf ball and endorse Callaway Golf on the PGA Tour. Mickelson,
the No. 4-ranked golfer in the world and one of the game's most
popular and exciting players, will wear the company's logo on his
shirt sleeve, the side of his visor and his golf bag and will wear
Callaway Golf® footwear and golf glove.

Mickelson, 34, will start this week's Bell Canadian Open by
playing a prototype version of Callaway Golf's popular HX® Tour Golf
Ball. The prototype is similar to the original HX Tour in distance and
aerodynamics, but has a softer cover for optimum control from 150
yards in -- a part of the game Mickelson has worked to perfect this
year. Also in his bag this week at Glen Abbey Golf Club, Oakville,
Ontario: a prototype Fusion® Driver -- a product Callaway Golf will
introduce later this year or early next year -- and the current Big
Bertha® 3-wood and 4-wood. He will work with Callaway Golf club
designer Roger Cleveland to develop the irons, wedges and putter that
best suit his game.

"This has been a wonderful year for me," Mickelson said. "Starting
with my first major championship at Augusta, and then by continuing to
play with more consistency than I have at any time in my career, I
have been able to accomplish a lot. The two areas I have stressed this
year have been driving the ball in play and having optimum distance
control from 150 yards in. To further my progress in those areas, and
to help me achieve my ultimate goal of becoming the No. 1 player in
the world, I felt it was necessary to switch to the exciting new
driver and golf ball technology from Callaway Golf."

Mickelson, who has 23 career wins, currently is No. 1 in four 2004
PGA Tour statistical categories, including scoring average (actual) at
69.33 and the All-Around category, which measures overall excellence.
His 2004 season earnings of more than $5.6 million already are a
career best for a single year. His performances in the four major
championships have been the best of any player in the world this year
-- 1st in the Masters, 2nd in the United States Open, 3rd in the
British Open and tied for 6th in the PGA Championship -- coming within
a total of five strokes of winning them all.

"Phil Mickelson is a world-class player in every respect," said
Bill Baker, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Callaway Golf
Company. "He has consummate skills as a professional golfer, a
wonderful record as a champion and remarkable personal appeal that
attracts a huge fan base to our sport. We think he is going to be a
tremendous representative of the Callaway Golf family of brands and we
could not be happier to have him."

Callaway Golf President and Chief Operating Officer Patrice Hutin
added, "Phil is the most popular golfer on the planet today. His
choice to represent Callaway Golf on the PGA Tour is very, very
exciting for us because it validates our position as the golf club and
golf ball technology leaders at the very highest level of the sport.
At the same time, his passion for the game mirrors our approach to the
business and really connects with the Callaway Golf customers and
consumers. We look forward to a long and mutually rewarding
relationship with Phil."

I bet he did'nt feel gay when they handed him the cheque.

..anyone know how much that cheque was for :?: It'd have to be a pretty substantial amount to get him to move from Titleist.

I thought for sure he was gonna sign with TaylorMade :?

It is going to be going away from normal Callaway Hacksticks for them, as I can't see him using x-14ps, I'd say he will want a blade??

Will he use his Titiest's until he's happy with a set?

Taylormade would've been good, but there are too many big names using them already, now he really only has Annika, as CH3 hasn't really done much latley.

i can't wait to see what sort of irons they design for him :D

I can't really understand why he wants to make the move now though, after having such an exceptional year with Titleist ... moving to a new company might stop the momentum he'd already built up :?

I think the ability of the player himself is more important factor than the equipment he use. (Well, in a reasonable degree of course)

He just use the woods really.... all irons and putter remain the same so it should be ok.

seeing as how he will be working with Roger Cleveland (as opposing to take the wussy way and use the FTXs), I'll say look for designs close to the TA3s...

Classic stuff, andylo.
I can't believe our moderator hasn't picked up on it yet, and deleted the post.

:?: How much trialling do you think he did of the clubs before he made his decision?

He got in trouble from titliest earlier after calling callaway to commend them on there fusion driver and golf balls. I don't think it was any surprise he went to callaway.

And I can understand the jinz factor of changing brands while on a hot streak. But I think he just enjoys his golf so much that it won't affect him. I don't think I've seen a pro who enjoys himself so much in the tournaments. Good on him.

I think he decided to move on after they refused to upgrade his contract :? He was reportedly on US$4 million per year, but wanted an upgrade to his contract after having such a good year..Titleist refused ... so PM said :smt039 :smt098

I have it from a very knowledgable source today (ie someone that knows phil personally) that he definitely was sacked and it was a lot more to do than the incident when he commented on the Callaway (?) golf ball. Apparently it was a number of misdemeanours over a period of time.

and no I wont tell who it was that told me, cos i can get lots of good inside goss anytime :-)

No, the word is the new Australian manager of Titliest is not giving anything away. The story is that Norman owned Titliest in Australia, but House of Golf owes titliest $1.6M, so Titliest have taken direct control of the aussie operations back. dunno why poor old greg lost out there though - he must be doing it tough these days.

Mind you I did pick up a dozen each of Titliest prestige and Callaway somethings for 2 hrs work, which is not bad pay if you can get it.

So in other words gone are the days when Titliest were handing out boxes balls like it was going out of fashion.

Normans company "International Brands" lost Titleist last year...that is why you saw heaps and heaps of Titleist clubs being whored on egay and in shops...killed the actual price of the club :(

I can still get cheap prov1s mate...trust me ;) hehe
