I reckon it should go back to Coolangatta Tweed GC, if they will allow us to play on the Saturday and Sunday.

Discuss.

I'm not keen for 36 in one day.
I don't think this is a viable option considering the numbers that we get, and it was so much better last year over two days.

Bugger off with that list crap this early.

Can we play the West course twice?

5th January 2007, 04:34 PM
During our spitballing in chat I dug up a Robina Woods - Colonial double for $125 incl carts.
Any love ?

Don't know the courses but the price seem reasonable to me. I'd go it.

I'm in. What time does the bar open?

If we forget about the golf then any time you want

With the boss at work this year then I can say I am firmly in 4B pencil for this.

Having not played any of the champs yet (pathetic I know) I'd much prefer 36 over 2 days to spread out the fun, and not feel rushed.

And I'd play a Chinchilla/Dalby double if I had to to play the champs. Are Robina/Colonial any good? I'd pay $125 including carts in a heartbeat.

AndyP

If you knew the courses, just, you'd be more likely to "go it".

BrisVegas
5th January 2007, 04:46 PM
Robina/Colonial are 30mins closer to Brisbane and cheap as sh!t for those mega members on board. We'd get guest rates for the rest of the gang.

Robina is nice, but pretty tight and definitely helps to have some local knoweldge.

The CTH courses (esp West) are rather more straightforward and fairer...

I would be happy to play Tweed Heads again or the Robina/Colonial deal.
Playing over 2 days is the only way to go though :-D

Go the deal for Robina and colonial!!

I'd play Pines Rivers/Pine Rivers combo for the champs. It's not about playing the best courses for me, so put me down no matter where we play.
Now I'm not as blase about where I drink and chuck, so I need some options there.

No preferences for me just to know it is being organised and I will make plans to make it there.

It would actually be only $70 for mega members....

not really fair that some of us get it cheaper is it? not that I have a suggestion to fix it.

Fishman Dan

Robina is nasty. Some will be spending enough money to get there, let alone on lost balls around the course!

The website tells me that it is $70 for Robina and $60 for Colonial for Mega members in summer, totalling $130. Where does your total come from?

I don't mind which courses we play and don't think CTH River is too tight, or care about losing balls at Robina (can't be any more lost than at PH). It should be great either way.
Let's see what sort of availablity the two options have and a get a quote from CTH.

Grunt, we don't have a specific weekend in mind. Just the October/November area, dependent on course availability and green renovations schedule, if known.

This is a great idea. Middle week in September/October(last w/e in September I think it is) holiday is a great choice :smt002 I'd be a 95% chance of making them, cause I could bring the whole family back for the 2 week of the holidays.

AndyP

As much as we'd like every person to be available and make it, it just ain't gonna happen. It's best to cater for the masses, and once again the best time for the courses too.
What weekend that is, I don't know, but the earlier we set it, the better, so people can plan around it.

FYI AFL Grand Final Sat Sept 29, NRL Grand Final Sun Sept 30.

I think the first course of action is to narrow down the possible venues - are the robina/colonial?? and CTH courses the only ones worth considering. If yes, can g69 contact robina/colonial regarding their maintenance schedule later this year, and is their someone who is willing to do the same for CTH?

Once we know the schedules we should be able to come up with some dates for either venues that would be best.

The next thing would be to suss out the accommodation/feeding/drinking options. CTH is probably already known but what about Robina? Anyone with any ideas or willing to check this out.

Indy will be on around the weekend of the 20th october right? Bathurst is at the end of october isn't it. Guessing we need to avoid the indy weekend and should we also avoid bathurst?

Is this a good starting point. Narrow down the courses, check mainenance dates, pick weekends we need to avoid. Check accom/food/booze. After that we should be pretty close to picking a weekend. Am I right?

Any offers to check these things out? I kind of volunteered G69 to contact robina, but anyone else willing to help out. I did this last year at bribie is; just rang them and said that a heap of us want to play the course later in the year but want to avoid renovations etc. They were very helpful.

AndyP
7th January 2007, 11:22 PM
g69 tried to ring CTH on Friday, but didn't get an answer. He was going to try again tomorrow.

I don't think the accommodation/dinner venue has to be that close to the golf courses, as we should have plenty of cars to travel in. Therefore I don't think it's a priority, as we can work around whatever courses we end up playing.

damoocow
7th January 2007, 11:58 PM
Thoughts of Moocow........
1- CTH is a boring $hithole and not worthy of the champs...although they have a thriving attack bird regiment which is almost worth the price of admission
2- Robina / Colonial sounds like a good double to me ..
3- I thought the Victorian Links Challenge was the champs for 2007 ???
4- Ignore any mention of Indy / Bathurst when deciding on dates as that involves car racing which as we all know is an effeminate pastime.
5- I think we should go to Kooralbyn...why ? .......some new holes / course is in great condition by all accounts / I am sure we can get a great deal there for 36 holes including accom [I can look into this if you like] .....once you are there you don't need to drive or taxi anywhere [ courtesy bus last I knew]/ they have pool tables and I think they even sell Coopers ...the real pain is for out of towners concerning getting there but hey this is ozgolf and I am sure we can sort something out.........and we can have the par 3 challenge [ala Augusta] sometime on the weekend on the little par 3 course [ I hope it still exists].......
6- is Jan 27/28 too early ?

moomoo

PeteyD
8th January 2007, 06:22 AM
I threw Kooralbyn up in early talkings and it was thought that it wouldn't be good for out of towners, although it is only an hour or so away. Same distance as Bribie really.

There is a lot of love for playing two different courses over the two days. I like the Robina / Colonial idea if we can get onto that one.

Be a nice venue if the course is up to scratch (as golfer69 has stated)

AndyP

Playing a par 3 round sounds like it would take up precious drinking time, unless we are taking eskies around the course.

This is what we need to be verified.

I remember once before there was talk of going out there for a game, but somebody said they had just been out there and the course was in terrible shape.

Fingers crossed it's bounced back to the great condition it was once in.

Here's another thought if SE Qld gets the nod for a venue.
Play an 18 hole event at Kooralbyn on a Sunday. I'm sure the course would be empty. Give the opportunity for others to play a practice game on the Saturday and an overnighter, without making the accom compulsory.
Positives for KV are the price and the course 9 if its in decent nick)
Negatives are the fact its only one course and its a prick of a drive from Brisbane and Goldie.

I wouldn't consider it.
Must admit that bald headed moocow is making some sense. The punters drove ober an hour to get to Bribie...whats the trip take from bris airprot to Kooralbyn ?
They will surely do a shit hot deal right now as they are keen to get the punters back up there.
Great course providing there is some grass on it and a pissy game on that par 3 would be a hoot.

As far as I see it the only downsides are the travel from Brisbane airport and the fact we will play the same course twice. It only takes about an hour from my place here on the Goldie.

How about having it on a long weekend - possibly Jun 9/10/11 - Queen's birthday. That way there is no need to tee off at sparrow fart on Sunday morning, which I know brought about the downfall of many hungover ozgolfers (yours truly included) last year. Still have the option of going home on Sunday night or maybe staying for 2 or 3 nights. Anyone with me on this one??

The travel doesn't look like it would be an issues. I'll just grab whatever is the cheapest fare out of Coolangatta or BNE.

The champs is as much about the social aspect as the golf so everyone together is great. That's what made DC the most deserving winner. Play golf, sink piss, play cards and talk shit. He did it all with the best of them.

Choppa
8th January 2007, 03:52 PM
I'll be running down straight past the Brissy airport, so a pick-up from there to KV wouldn't be a problem.
I don't think it's too big a logistical exercise.

PeteyD
8th January 2007, 04:07 PM
I am not sure that a poll is needed. The organiser/s should say where and when it is, like they did last year. Polls just make people grouchy ;)

KV looks like the way to go.

Also the price is for unlimited golf, so if you stay an extra night you could play the course again. It used to be compulsory carts too.

Grunt

What is the course like? I remember years ago it was like the only resort course in Australia or something.

PeteyD
8th January 2007, 04:22 PM
It was the first resort course in Australia. According to all reports the course has come back well and the new holes are good. See the website, http://www.kooralbynresort.com.au/ and http://www.kooralbyn.com/index.htm for information.

The course was always a great challenge, particularly the 15th and 17th, and the 200m par 3 5th always takes the breath away.

I would book in the next week or so. Considering the week before is booked out.

I rang them today to suss a few things out. Firstly there is a $50 deposit upon making your booking. No big deal. If your partner is coming (clikchic should be there) then it would be $75 for them for the nights stay. This rate also goes for those who want to stay the friday night as well. I have an email from them with the costs of the day spa for your partner if you're interested. I'm sure clikchic will spend some time there too.

There are some pamper packages in the spa price list, I think they might include the accomodation. I'll get it up soon.

Hate to be a party pooper but my brother and one of our mates played the copperhead last Thursday, they both said the course was in disgraceful condition and that the revamped holes were shite. ie the 18th is a 420m par 4 with a lake in the middle of the fairway at about the 210m mark......... I think we let the boys heading down next week give us a full rundown and maybe reassess our options.

PeteyD
15th January 2007, 12:56 PM
Interesting. If they played last week and it was crap we might not go down. I had heard some reports that it was good now ...

Quotes I have seen on ISG (From just before christmas)

"Well i'll have to eat my words, not only was the course in good condition, it was in superb condition. Every green was nicely covered, sunburn of the green was almost non existant! Fairways were good, and while we were there it was raining again. Anyone wanting to play over the holiday period get out there, i was delighted to see it up to such a high standard. New 1st and 18th. The 18 is a cracker aswell. bit resort style but a beauty non the less. I cannont speak highly enough of the course. The course itself is probably the most enjoyable layout that i can remember, you have to think the whole way around. I'll be returning in the next couple of weeks that's for sure! "

"It is an interesting hole, a good drive will see you take on vegetated hill, which you'll end up on if you're not hitting it far. Whilst i layed up had a long iron to the green and (tried) to get up an down. Such an enjoyable course. We played the blacks and it makes some hole extreemly difficult. I am so impressed to see it back to a good standard, they are spending PELNTY all brand new carts, and new groundsmen, new pro shop and new holes. And they say the are only starting the upgrade. One very enjoyable trip (even though we had to play in the rain.) "

Moe Norman

whats wrong with the 18th? Maybe I would like it.

I have always liked KV, I can't imagine the layout has changed that much? Condition is a month to month proposition, so what they were like today can hardly be used as a guide.

CTH greens were terrible during the 2005 champs and the course was in pretty poor nick, at least KV is saved by being a good layout.

I have plenty of love for either the Robina/Colonial double or the KV option. I'd rather play nudgee North/south than go back to CTH.

Moe Norman
25th January 2007, 10:33 PM
I'm just pointing out that its very early to comment on condition of greens in a course being reworked and having millions of $ pumped into it 10 months before a possible event.

I played Nudgee 5 or 6 times last year. 3 times the greens were mint, basically perfect (i think i claimed best condition in brissie at the time). The other times they were ordinary.

Its simply pot luck.

Dare I ask where we are with this ?

I had another idea....The Robina - Colonial deal is $130 plus accom right....I'll give the Radisson a call at Palm meadows and see what an accom and golf rate would be. If we can get this around the $120 mark and find another close by track like emmy lakes $40...is this a viable option ?

Yep, I would be fine with that young Richard :smt002

PeteyD
29th January 2007, 11:16 AM
KV is $139 including accomodation and breakfast and unlimited golf, +$75 per night for those of us that want the extra night and golf. Can't be beat valuewise. Will be interesting to see what Tezza can find out. I need to head back out there to pick up my balls and a shirt so will probably paly again in march / april. Be interesting to se if there is improvement.

$130 for Colonial / Robina is great. If the raddison will do some sort of deal to include accomodation would be good.

The Radisson deal courses are all good "on their day", but who's to say we won't cop crappy greens, cored fairways, turf diseases etc no matter where we play. Robina/Palm Meadows/Lakelands/Emmy Lakes etc etc are all reasonable courses, but the Radisson deal is gonna be $200 per head twin share. We've played the champs in the past at Cooly-Tweed which was garbage and Pacific Harbour which tore all of us a new one. I think as long as the course is reasonable and the price is right, that's all that matters. from where I'm sitting, KV looks to tick all the boxes.

Add another course and you are easily looking at $220+ which will be out of the league for more than a few...

I spoke to my mate today and he said that if the keep their promises and the money flowing, he can't see why it won't be in goodish nick by November.
Apparently the Super is a young keen guy with 6 or 7 staff, so lets hope they keep the money flowing for him.

Terry.

here's hoping Tez, the layout is great (as we all know) but the condition was very poor.. particularly the greens.

That's good news though :)

Good then let the planning begin. Unless a shift change is in the future I am working so the Leave forms will go in this week. Count me in, not sure yet if Rachelle is going to come with me this year or not. She mentioned coming and leaving Tayla at her Mum's for the weekend. Is anyone else bringing their non golfing partner?

I have just finished up a shocking hump at work that started in November and finished with me working 40 hours of the long weekend.

My leave form will be going in this week and I will pull my finger out for the Links Challenge.

Clikchic will most likely be coming, but she's really a member of ozgolf anyway. I'd say she'll do a session at the health spa!!

She was keen for last year and was looking forward to the dinner. She's dying to meet everyone.

I was planning too. We'll have a 3 mth old and a 2 yr old by then and I'm not comfortable leaving my wife to struggle on her own.

If you have a 3mnth old then I know robyn will give her a hand during the day. She gets as clucky as all hell. Luckily she comes home to our 2 and loses it pretty fast ;)

Well Grunt is still thinking of bringing Rachelle as we have enough lady OzGolfers that mean it should not be a problem.
