Another site has a YouTube thread.. i know there's one here somewhere but be buggered if i could find it.

Post any (semi?) amusing links if you think they are worthy.

Here's one that I know Speirsy will love. Georges Laraque from the Phoenix Coyote's NHL team is a massive guy who loves to biff. This one is from a game about a week ago.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnQbEt1JnB0

The funny part is half way through when they show the same footage with the audio of the 2 combatants. They basically agree before the puck is dropped.... it's almost like 2 teenagers arranging to meet behind the bike sheds!

I was watching a game last night and the Predators (Nashville) were doing everything they could to get him to punch-on, but apparently his coach had told him to resist!

That game is ridiculous. Is it actually in the rulebook that they can have a fight? Notice the refs stay out until after someone gets knocked down?
They should adopt that rule in the NRL!

Fighting will get you 5 minutes in the penalty box, but it is a "legal" part of the game. If you go out of your way to start a fight, you will get an extra 2 minute penalty, which will leave your team short a player for 2 minutes. You can also receive a 10 minute misconduct for starting fights, your team doesn't have to play shorthanded, but you have to sit in the box for an extra 10. You will receive a game misconduct (just kicked out of the game) if you fight 3 times in the same game.
The linesmen don't jump in until the guys stop, tie each other up, hit the ice, etc... That is mainly for their protection as the average enforcer in the NHL is about 6'3, 230+ lbs.

Ice Hockey is very underrated. It's a great mix of bashing the bejeezus out of each other somewhat mindlessly, and scoring goals. Couple that with the fact that ball very rarely goes 'out'... it's like good ole schoolyard 'Kill the Dill with the Pill'.

PeteyD

when your teammates won't pass you the puck you need something to do.

Speirsy11

Why do the fights start? Is there some sort of game strategy at work here?

A lot of it rides on etiquette actually. If someone does something they know they shouldn't they can expect it. For example, the goalies are off limits, as are guys who are much smaller than you. So if a guy goes after a goalie or a big tough guy goes after a little guy, they can expect someone to get them. Things like cheap shots, getting the stick up in a guys face, running your gums.......They'll all tend to get you in the odd punch up.

Strategy also plays a role, sometimes when a team is down and nothing is going for them a guy will take one for the team and get in a tussle.....You'd be amazed how much a good fight (win or lose) will energize a team......

And sometimes guys just piss you off.

Fedoruk's one tough SOB. He returned last week! Most likely wearing a shield of some sort. Don't think he'll be fighting anytime soon. Apparantly this is the second time he has had his face broken in a fight. Kinda reminds me of Nick Kypreos. All the heart but couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag. I remember wacthing a LEafs game a few years back. Kypreos fought, had his nose smashed, blood everywhere. He got fixed up, came back out, fought again, same results. He went after the guy AGAIN in the third (may have been Jim Cummins) and Cummins was shaking his head saying "No! Don't do it!" Third fight, Kypreos lying on the ice, bleeding everywhere.
It was no surprise that his career ended when he got knocked out and his head bounced off the ice, giving him a major concussion.

I'll see if I can find the clip..

San Jose vs Phoenix tonight... 2 or 3 quick cheap shots and it's on! 5 on 5! The thing that stuns me is how quickly the ice is littered with gloves and sticks!! In the blink of an eye all fists are bare!!

When the dust settles Davison and Skatchard are going at it. The only things bruised were ego's, but when you're 4-0 down (San Jose smashing Phoenix), you may as well try and win the battle, because the war was well and truly lost!

you see it a lot when one team has a big lead. near the end of the game, the losing team sends out "the tough guys", just to prove that they won't be walked over and the set the tone for the next game. the opposing coach will see this happening and send out his "goons", in order to protect the superstars/scorers/europeans, and the next thing you know, chaos...
fun for the whole family.

It was Mike Comrie who was involved in a solid front-on check next to the goals that sent both to the floor, a matter of seconds later he was on the opposing blue-line and came in with another solid check - and that was enough for the Sharks!

Is one of the pre-req's for your on-ice team that between them they aren't allowed to make up a full set of teeth?

For years I've played Ice Hockey computer games with mates (starting with the MegaDrive!) because it combines goal scoring and beating the crap out of your mate - there's nothing better than levelling a guy into the boards, perhaps even injuring them  From there the interest has grown. It's not the easiest game to follow on the TV.

The thing that amazes me about the game is the longevity of the players, some of these guys are 35+ and still mixing it up with the young fellers. Truth is they play about 8-12 minutes on the ice, but they are tough guys.

The way they can sprint, stop, change direction and go 100 miles an hour again is pretty damn amazing.

you get the odd freak like chris chelios, 42 and still playing 18-20 minutes a night.

as for the teeth thing, with a frozen puck flying around at 100 mph and 12 sticks on the ice at a time, you generally lose a few.

Footnote - This was sent to our MD by one of his colleagues, I have no idea why (we're in animal health). I'm guessing it's either an overly-egotisticL manager showing off their holiday videos, or someone forwarding a movie as motivational material about "winning against the odds" for the next conference. Not bad if you can keep people sitting still for 8 minutes.

For the dave matthews fans, and anyone who appreciates a great instrument solo. Luckily the person who uploaded this split it in 2, since the full version is like 12minutes long. This starts right at the start of the violin solo. This blows my mind, especially when cranked up on my home system. WAA violin rocks is all I can say.

Shavey, if this doesn't make you chase down his central park concert then nothing else well. How a band fronted by a dweeby little guy playing acoustic guitar, bass guitar, drums, violin and keyboard can hold such a crowd astounds me, but I love it. They're off the wall but do it so well.

And there's no way I'd pick a fight with the guys on sax or violin!

I watched this today, and it was great. I then spent a lot of time watching other Robot Chicken youtube videos. Transformers, Flintstones, Hitler, Harry Potter. All funny stuff!

I remember people going to see him when he was in Southern Sons ( remember that group) and leaving all disappointed because he played pretty much straight time with no outrageous fills or drum solos

There was a modern drummer interview with him where the journo turned up at his apartment to find him bathed in sweat from his practice. He's also known for leaving official functions early if they are going to dig into his practice time.

This next guy is one of my all time favourite drummers. His father was a famous session bass player. Click on the link then scroll down and click on Message in a Bottle. At least this one is enjoyable for everyone.

That's called the traditional grip Tezza.

I'm pretty sure it started out with the drummers who used to lead the troops into battle in years gone by, they have the snare drum slung over their shoulder .. tilted at an angle. To hit the drum correctly with their left hand (if they are right-handed) they had to grip the stick like that because the drum was tilted away from them on an angle.

Make sense ?

I thought it would have been a tradition (old school) thing, makes sense. Just watching Foo Fighters on Video Hits and their drummer is both hands hammer style. I guess it comes down to who teaches you and what is comfortable.

Yeah most of the young blokes use "matched" grip as it lends itself to a bit more power on the kit.

Unless you're Virgil Donati though

Do any of them use the stack and tilt method?

Dave Weckl and Vinnie Colaiuta give it a slam too. You'll find a lot of jaz guys using traditional, and a spattering of rock guys too. I use a little of both. I very much use traditional grip when using brushes. I also find when using traditional I use slightly different fills than when playing matched.

I find I can hit pretty much just as hard either way.

Excuse the quality, but enjoy the outcome

A bit of background - a 3 man ambrose event, the bloke who played the shot had barely had one count for the day, and this was chipping on at the 17th. Someone said he always performs best under pressure, so a camera phone was produced... and the ball never looked like missing...

So it seems David Letterman just wanted to get Paris Hilton on the show to take the piss out of her. :)
