View Full Version : Sunshine Coast Xmas Golf

AndyP
21st November 2006, 05:10 PM
I'll be playing a few rounds on the Sunny Coast over the Xmas break starting from Friday December 22, so if anyone else is interested, let me know, and I'll organise something.

I'll probably base most of my rounds at Nambour, but am open to other suggestions. There's plenty to choose from, including Beerwah, Caboolture, Woodford, Bribie, etc. I'm thinking of having a hit at Gympie too, as I haven't played there before.

I'm even more of a grump at Xmas than the rest of the year. So in my case, no.

I'll be up for some, but you knew that. May not get any into any before the 27th though. will be heading up on the 23rd, busy 24, 25 and 26th.
but I'll be there till maybe the 2nd or 3rd. I'd like another hit at caloundra myself.

AndyP
22nd November 2006, 12:09 AM
I'll probably head back to Brisbane on the 27th or 28th. So we'll have to get at least one in, if not two.

I think Caloundra is expensive relative to some others around. Of course, they think they are cheap relative to Pelican Waters. If I could get you on Pelican for $50 or less, would you play?

goughy
22nd November 2006, 05:23 AM
$50 would be my top, so yeah, I'd give it a go. I thought caloundra was around $25 to $30 to play? Just always liked it.

As long as its during public holiday and early tee time I will be in. Don't care where nor how much :)

The 2006 Golf Course Guide says it's $35, so it would be at least that.

I'll look into getting a game at Pelican Waters on the Wednesday.

22nd November 2006, 01:04 PM
yep, i'd love to play as many rounds as possible! i'll be based up at Flaxton (near Mapleton) from Sat 23/12 to Tu 9/1.

anywhere up there, any cost. like value for money so will play any resort courses at reduced price. preference to atleast play once at both Caloundra and Headland.

rang Caloundra 5491 2626 & Headland 5444 5944 earlier this month asking about social play

Caloundra social play
M after 10:30
Tu after 11
W no
Th after 12:15
F generally no as vets or other comps
green fees $38
didn't ask about playing in comps

Headland social play
M anytime
Tu 7:30 - 8:30 only (for 18)
W no
Th after 1
F anytime
Su anytime
green fees $40, though can pay a weekly green fee of $70 for unlimited rounds
+ can play in comps on Tu W Th & Sat $20 green fee (half usual) + $5 comp fee

through www.iseekgolf.com (http://www.iseekgolf.com/) cost of social rounds are
Caloundra $32 (save 16%)
Pelican Waters $99 (save 34% - usually $150!)
Headland $34 (save 15%
Nambour $20 (save 33%)
Gympie $21 (save 30%)

AndyP

Headland @ $40!!!!!!!! They really do have their heads up their arse.
Horton Park is about the same.

Rusty
23rd November 2006, 01:01 PM
Goughy, where will you be based?

Alo, with your request for public holiday only & early tee time, does that mean you'll just be driving up for the day?

i rang Caloundra
for comps, visitors can ring up the day before, to book for the Wed or Sat comp (both 6-8 & 10:30-12:30 slots) for $39 including $8 comp fee. so looks like iseekgolf.com $32 and play social will be the way to go here.
Goughy, with AP leaving on about the 27th, and you not available to play until the 27th, we might have to play here (and Alo) after the 27th??

Beerwah 5494 6611 www.beerwahgolfclub.com.au (http://www.beerwahgolfclub.com.au)
comps (men's & non-vets) Wed, Sat, Sun - $15 inclusive of comp fee - now that looks good!
social $25 Tu & Fr
no iseekgolf discounted rounds

Horton Park
social $40 (incl $5 bar voucher), reciprocal $20 (no bar voucher)
comp $45 (incl $5 bar voucher & $5 comp fee), no reciprocal for comps so same at $45
iseekgolf.com for Horton $34 (save 15%)

Rusty

$35!? weave your magic AP.

Goughy, we'll wait and see when the game(s) with AP are on before booking Caloundra (for maybe Th 28/12, M 1/1 or Tu 2/1 all in arvo)

AndyP
24th November 2006, 01:26 PM
There will be limited spots for Pelican, as it's for a group of 4, and family get first dibs. But as soon as I have it set up, I'll let you know what's happening.

You guys are first in after that.

Sorry Rusty, I thought at least one of the family would decline.
However, if anyone else wants a post Xmas Wed morn hit at Pelican for under $50 (absolute bargain, normally $160 per person), you could buy another voucher.

------------

Now for the other rounds.

I'd like to play Nambour on Fri 22 and Sat 23, as I haven't had a hit there for a couple of months. Are you up for that, Rusty? Anyone else? It would cost less than $20 for visitors.

The Friday would probably be mid-morn or arvo, as I might be heading to the Coast in the morning from Brisbane.
The Saturday would probably be morning, if this suits interested parties.

As for the Sunday, I'm still thinking Gympie, as I haven't played there and I have a 2 for 1 voucher. You've got first dibs on that one, Rusty.

These rounds could probably be shuffled around too.

the Wed game at Pelican... Is anyone else thinking of heading up from Brisbane? Was it an open invite or are you just blogging?

AndyP
11th December 2006, 02:48 PM
Open invite, but someone else would need to buy the voucher off ebay, as it would need to be in someone elses name.
Assuming Rusty is still in, you need two more.

Being an ebay auction the price is variable, but I'd definitely expect under $50pp based on completed auctions.

AndyP

Here's some directions. You can always call if you have any trouble.

Directions

For those coming from the south:
Follow Bruce Highway from Brisbane, and take Parklands exit (do not take the two Nambour exits as the golf course is on the northern side of Nambour). This exit takes you onto Nambour Connection Road, turn left here.
The golf club entrance will be on the right after about 500m, you may not spot the golf club until you get to the entrance.

Alo
You have something to whinge about when you have work every Xmas day for 16 years. This Xmas is my first Xmas day off since 1990. In saying that I am back at work Boxing Day.
So when you actually have to work all the public holidays in a year, like I did last year, you may have a case to whinge & whine.

AndyP
20th December 2006, 02:57 PM
Whinge, whinge, whinge. You choose your line of work, you get paid for it, deal with it.

Steve, if having a pull rope up from the 18th green to the clubhouse means the course is hilly, then you are right. The 9th hole is flat though.

BrisVegas

I wasn't whinging about myself I was just highlighting that Alo has nothing to complain about.

I will point out one thing for you though, I have wage averaging so if I work Xmas day I get the same shift penalty I will get for going to work today. The only time I get the full penalty associated with the day is if I don't turn up. Then the company takes the full 150% loading off me, meaning I lose more than I earn. Which is what happened to me earlier this year when I was off work sick for almost 2 months.

I'm taking my first week off in four years. So I'm not whinging anymore. Actually it's more like 10 days, but if I work hard tomorrow it might be 11. I'll probably be bored by the end of it and want to get back to work.

Wouldn't mind more golf of course. But some overseas relatives will be there until the 26th so I'm not going anywhere unless they come.

AndyP
22nd December 2006, 05:06 PM
It didn't rain at all during play, in fact it was quite hot at times (especially after Eag's said it was nice and cool). The course was soft, but definitely not muddy. The course was being mowed while we were there. I'm pretty sure we all had fun, although it has been voted as the hilliest course played by both Eag's and Iain.

We started off as a group of 5, with a couple of choppers. Managed to get away from them at the halfway mark, and finished the round in under 4 hours, which surprised us, as the first nine felt painful.

There was no spectacular golf played. Iain hit some of the best drives I have seen around that course (although we were off the whites), and put himself in some great positions. Shame he didn't know what to do with himself from those spots. Eag's struggled to find fairways (shanks don't help), but still did enough to score. I floundered early, but came home strong.

1. AndyP 37pts
2. Iain 33pts
3. Eag's 29pts

Thanks for visiting lads.

City's got nothing on Nambour when it comes to hills. And city's probably the second hilliest course I've played.

Thanks for the game today Andy & Iain.
That is one bloody hilly track  I thought my calf muscles were going to explode at one point.
Big thankyou to Iain for the lift in his nice new car :smt002
Iain was smashing that driver today, very impresive.

Andy played an awesome back nine and was hitting plenty of fairways today.
I played very average once again but had fun none the less :)
Got my point 1 back now back out to 13 bout time :)

Another Nambour OZgolf day completed yesterday, this time off the blue markers. Conditions were much the same as the day before, except hotter to start with, as the breeze doesn't seem to appear until mid-morning. A round was finished in about 3.5 hours. I could get used to that.

Steve "choker" rawlo killed the front nine with 22 points (Even or plus one off the stick?), then threw a good round away on the back with only 10 points, which he seems to do quite a bit.
Rusty showed that he is a master of the par 3s. He put his name down for NTPs on a couple of holes, and played great shots into a couple of others. He got 4 balls for his NTP on the 8th.
For me, same stuff, different day.

Thanks for coming guys.

1. AndyP 38pts
2. Rusty 33pts
3. steverawlo 32pts

CCR for Friday was 64 (4 under), so I still went out 0.1 for my 37pts. I got 2 balls for the best back nine though (23pts) and another in the ball rundown.
CCR for Saturday was 65, no change to my cap, but another BRD ball.

Today the OZgolf Tour made it to Gympie Pines Golf Club. It wasn't a bad course, but it wasn't great either. The condition was pretty good, except the bunkers and the greens were a bit slow (which suits me fine).

There were some interesting holes there. But they undo it all, by playing the par 3 17th over the top of the par 5 18th tee. Bizarre! I'd guess that the land they sold for villas, took out a hole and they just made one up.

The quality of golf wasn't overly good, but that depends on whether you think of Rusty as a 21 capper or not......
He hits fairways, and continues to hit par 3 greens. It's a good basis for a much lower handicap.
Jarro made some great up and downs today, and I can only play good in patches.

1. Rusty 85 nett 64
2. AndyP 85 nett 73
2. Jarro 85 nett 73

Same gross score.....freaky!!!!

It was a fun day guys, thanks for playing.

thanks for the hitout today guys .. i had a great time, even if the score doesn't indicate that ;)

Gympie is an interesting little course. Some really nice little par 4's where you really have to position your tee shot in just the right place. Like AndyP said, the setup of the 17 and 18th tees is a joke really ... i've never seen another tee box setup right in the middle of another hole before.

Anyway, was great to get out for a hit. Rusty is in no way a 21 capper. AndyP had the fade on automatic today, and i was my typical all over the shop self :p

I don't know what happened out there yesterday but it was very frustrating.

Thanks for the game guys - it was good to get out there before Xmas. I think it's quite a good little course, something different.

Nice to meet Rusty for the first time. He'll be in the mid teens or lower very soon.

Andy left a few out there and still had 38 pts. Single figures shouldn't be too far away based on yesterday's effort.

Andy's performance seems pretty standard for him. A great 9. A bad 9. I remember when we last played at Nambour.

20 points and 18 points on the nines. I'm not consistent from hole to hole, forget each nine. Not that I should expect consistency considering I don't practice.

If the rain stays away tomorrow's round is going to be pretty awesome. I haven't played at Pelican for a few years, and have heard that things are looking good there. This time they have colour GPS carts too. Sweet!

The rain didn't stay away, but it was only drizzle, so we didn't get drenched. It was just annoying.

The course was in great condition, despite a bit of rain overnight. The greens looked like they were recovering from some disease, but rolled true.

We got the hurry up from the ranger a couple of times, as the comp was on our tail. I thought we were going a pretty good pace for a social group and ended up well in front of the group behind.

Goughy started great guns with two pars on the first two holes, and played pretty well the front nine. He fell in a heap towards the end of the back nine.
I would have liked to be hitting it straighter off the tee, to allow me to play the holes as they are meant to be played, but it wasn't to be. My highlight was a stretch of 1 under over 6 holes. My lowlight was a shank on the 18th and the wobbly straight after.

Our playing partners struggled just to get it off the tee. Many balls were donated to the course during the day by all of us.
Nevertheless, it was a good day.

Thanks for the cheap day out andy. It was much appreciated.

Really enjoyed myself today. Even tho I was using 30yr old wilson blades and an old jap issue tm v(something) that looked like an old burner. I don't think it got more than 10mtrs off the ground most of the time but got out there enough. The blades were interesting; I certainly don't miss the sting on an off centre hit. But in the end I think at most the clubs would have cost me 2 or maybe 3 shots. Mostly in half distance control and I was quite inaccurate left and right compared to usual with my irons.

I was pretty happy with things after the first 9, and really the first 13. But like my last few games I wear down and fall in a heap over the last 5. At least I parred the 18th, index 1 hole with the drive of the day.

And by the 18th I have to say your dummy spits would have had me rolling on the ground in fits of laughter had it not been wet. Really topped off a good day. Not even crappy clubs, poor golf or rain could dampen my spirits.

I do need to get some exercise and play more golf. The swing is getting tired too soon and it is costing me big time.

Would I play full price to play there? Give me the $10 open day at nambour any day.

I donated at least 4 or 5 balls to the cause so that accounts for a lot of my extra strokes.

On the front 9 I scored a 7 on the first par 5. Was in 3 bunkers and played what I feel were 3 great bunker shots. The first one I was about 80 out in a fairway bunker as it was my first sub distance sw I had no idea how hard to hit it. Hit it beautifully straight at the pin but left it short and burried a ball and a half deep in another bunker. Next one I towed the sw in and hit it hard but it was just too deep and came out well but too low and hit the edge of the green and bounced into the bunker beside. Next one was a standard bunker shot out that came out well. Feels funny being happy with each shot but I felt every one was played well under the circumstances.

All in all a great day out. Pitty it's my only game these hols, but andy's dummy spits made it worth the while :) :) :)

Yeah, I'm interested in the plural use of the term too. The 18th was definitely one (I was fuming about saving the only shank for the last approach of the day), but besides that I can only recall the standard swearing after a shot or multiple shots.

You had a few at Gympie too

You tell me. It was only chips at Gympie. And it is only occasionally (not as much as Eag's). Maybe just laziness and lack of concentration in setup.

You have a selective memory. The 18th was just the icing on the cake. Although even on the 18th you didn't chuck a club. I was holding out for that.

Maybe we have different definitions of dummy spits. Maybe you need to play more often and with different people.

BTW I don't chuck clubs.

Eag's, just joshing. Just trying to take the focus of my own shanky fun....
