I'll make it a general thread on best pies discussion so everyone can discuss, but in particular, I'd like to know if any of the guys working in the Brisbane CBD have a recommendation for a killer pie.

Outside of the CBD, I think Humble Pies are bloody nice, and am yet to have a Yatala Pie.

Can't help with Brisneyland, but up here, Northmaid pies are the best.

Eating pies wouldn't be particularly good for your waist-shrinking program though, would it?

AndyP

I've stated before that I have made only minor adjustments to my food/drink intake. My "waist-shrinking" has been from exercise.
There's always room for a good pie.

Mrs Macs are always good. Gailes have always used Mrs Macs and they're a must-have on any visit there..

There's a little newsagent/deli on Anne Street opposite Mincom, just down from the backpacker palace that have good (and cheap) pies that are worth a look. Give me a call Andy and I 'll show you where they are...

Not in CBD, but Kings bakey on Old Cleveland Road in Coorpooroo (across from maccas) makes mean pies and sausage rolls. They won awards for the past 5 years.

And next time your at Yatala, try the Apple and Custard. mmmmmm

Yeah, Yatala are the best by a mile in my opinion.

I do like a curry pie from Brumbies in Queens Plaza too if you are looking for a pie in town.

Yeah, one has opened across the road from Fitzy's Loganholme (in where officeworks is) and there's also one at Camp Hill.

Haven't tried one yet, but heard a lot of good things about them...

Really feeling like a pie now :(

You're an evil man AndyP.

I haven't eaten a pie in months, and now I'm craving one.

I'd have to vote for pies from the Michell's Patiserie francise but I haven't tried many of the other mentioned.

I can tell you that Yatala pies have gone downhill dramatically in the last 10 years. They grew too rapidly and the quality now isn't a pinch on what it was when I was a wee kiddy.

Best Pie in OZ is Mockas at Port Douglas. No shadow about it. Courty if you havent given them a go, hie thee to Port and try one. They are on the next street west of the main street behind woolies.

Shakespeare's was a chain around Sydney - purely sensational pies. Big chunks of meat and killer fillings, and you could also get a large size one to take home and stick in the oven for 45 minutes.

I think they are called 'Jesters' nowadays, but back in the Shakespeares days they were unrivalled.

I will second that Eags !! - their pies are the second best I have ever tasted [have had 4 of them in the past week].......funnily enough we had family pie and veg for dinner tonight !..............the absolute best pies I have ever eaten were from a pieman who used to work by the side of the road at Everton Park [near the new Harvey Norman / Anaconda Development].....this was in the mid eighties and I would often pick up a couple on the way home from Uni/Teachers College and just sit by the side of the road and eat them - they were great, just plain meat and peas with a little black sauce ............

On the pies no longer available. I went to Burleigh Heads primary the year Polo Prince won the cup. We had a bloke who had a kombi van with a little chimney out the roof at the back. Bobs pies. His dutch pastie was superb. A square sheet of puff pastry with meat and potatoe in the middle and then the corners folded to the centre and then baked. Never had any thing as good since. Cant even make em myself. And his pie with peas, dont get me started. Funny thing was, it was a distinct group who shunned Bobs pies and got the 4 and 20. They were the kids who bought lunch every day. Those of us who usually brought lunch from home and bought a pie once or twice a week always went to Bob. Polo Prince won in 64. My first ever bet and my first win. 3 shillings. Surprised I remember that, given what else Iv'e chucked down my neck since.

Big Dad's now has a franchise in Brisbane City (cnr Adelaide & Creek). It could potentially blow the CBD pie competition out of the water, but I only just noticed it, so haven't tried one yet. That egg, beef, bacon & onion pie I had in Toowoomba was delish.

Up until now, I had been having Brumbies pies or Lorries pies, which are stocked in some cafes, including the one downstairs, particularly the Thai Chicken pie.

I'm over Big Dad's pies now. They are one of the more expensive pies going around, and although they are nice, they aren't that great. They are bigger though. I found they were pretty messy to eat too, as they was a bit of gravy in there.

Does anyone know what happened to that specialist pie place on Adelaide street near Officeworks and the Pool Hall? I think they moved, but I've got no idea where.
Found it. It's in Rowes Arcade (entrances off Adelaide and Edward). It's called Muzza's Pies - "Eat one or we'll both starve".
I tried one yesterday and it was good. Supposedly leaner than other pies. It was with a shredded/minced meat, instead of the mince meat you get in most.
I'll be trying a few more.

Well, even though they've been round the corner for ages, yesterday I finally had my first Big Dad's pie! Rob wanted to try them while she was on her gluten fix. She had a sausage roll and a vanilla slice and she got me a potato pie and some chocolate mud cake.

So far, pretty unimpressed. The pie had nothing on the Brumbies pies, and the mud cake was kinda bland/plain. Rob wasn't freak by the sausage roll either. The vanilla slice was just cream in the middle, not mixed with custard and was still frozen.

We've got a family pie to try for dinner, and an apple pie for desert but so far I won't be rushing back. Pretty disappointed 'cause mates rave about them up here!

What I found with the pie was that it was tiny diced pieces of meat (nothing wrong with that) but it was in a very runny gravy, so it was constantly dripping, and the pastry wasn't holding it together at all. Way too much ended up on my fingers, plate and lap!

goughy
5th May 2008, 10:40 AM
Rob and I were just discussing the best pies we've had. Funny enough, she mentioned the same place as me, which was unusual. She used to do a course next door so had had them. A mate and I used to go there for lunch and play pool.

It was the now defunct James Cook Tavern in Toowoomba. The pies had a crusty pastry exterior, the beef was diced chunks like almost an inch square in a thick gravy. Just glorious! $2.50 for a pie and coke at lunch.

They used to have a good piano bar there too, and me, rob and my mate would turn up there and get a plate of nacho's to share at like 10pm - $6 and it fed the 3 of us easy!

Now wonder the place went bust years ago! Food was too cheap...

Back in the 70's, my dad accidentally invented the best meat pie ever.

Mum had gone back to work, so he started doing the cooking, as the council knocked off at 4pm. Once a week, it was the WASP version of spag bol. with chopped bacon, onions, capsicum, ground beef, Campbells tomato soup and Fountain tomato sauce. One night, there was no pasta, so he dug out a recipe book and turned it into a pie. Except it was the pastry for an apple pie.

Simply mind blowing. Until I left home, once a week I looked forward to 'spag bol pie', with mash and peas.

Cranstons are very solid SH. Mount Morgan has always had sensational pies, their steak and onion is to die for. My memories of Mt Morgan would centre on how the putrid water supply would easily be used for the gravy in the pie!

I stopped at Freddo's to and from the champs last year. The quality was crap. Is that the one that does a crocodile pie? If so, I had one last year and it might as well been called a mornay pie because it had zero meat in it.

What you weren't sure it was crap the first time, you gave them a second chance or were just desperate for a feed ...
I had them before, but only after beers at Coffs Harbour GC. (Fredo's is the perfect distance for the first pitstop on the way to Sydney.)

As for making the same mistake twice, I guessed the first one (Thai chicken or pork) had been sitting in the warmer for too long. Ditto the minted lamb. As SMS said, they are just flavoured gravy, in a soggy pastry.

This sounds like awesomeness. Is this on the way to Bunbury?

If you go through Mandurah and the old coast road. Longer trip, not by a lot, but worth the pies.

My last trip to bunbury about 3 weeks ago I saw a sign for Miami bake house off the Forrest Highway so they may have set up shop there.

Youngsters will tell you Nathan Buckley is the best Pie, or possibly even Dane Swan. Most oldies will opt for Bobby Rose, Peter McKenna, Jack Regan or even Gordon Coventry.

My personal view is Peter Daicos, but my old man tells me its a tie between John Greening and Phil Carman - both never realised their full potential for very different reasons, but while their stints as Pies were short, they were also glorious for fans.

Ha, Now nobody wants a cold pie Moe. Best pie imo was Gav Brown, he lived for that club.

Also if you miss the Miami bakehouse on the ol mandurah rd, Navarros do a magic steak and mushroom pie. There still there, my bro had his normal Bacon egg & cheese pie on his way to binnie today, I tell him to have a seafood meledy or garlic prawn gig but nope, just the usual thanks love at Navarros.
