I'm sorry. I've resisted for so long. But I must talk about it.

Has Damien got this thing in the bag or what? He has smashed the others out of the water in the last few weeks.

BTW is it just me, or is Marcia even worse this season? Her statement of "I'm not going to criticise anymore", last week, was laughable.

If dean doesn't win it (which I don't think he will) it will be another year of the second or 3rd place getter being the more successful once out in the market.

He's another shannon noll, except he's young, single, has stage presence and while not the best singer in the final 12 (maybe even in 12th place) he's still twice as good as noll was when he came second.

I think many look at this as a singing contest. Many of the most successful groups and singers in the world have shown us that singing can often have little to do with it.

It's funny 'cause the judges tossed and turned on whether to include damien in the final 24. Look where he is now.

Jess is a great singer, but if she wins I fear that she won't sell well.

And maybe the judges don't want to say it, but this is all about album sales. Dean will sell albums. Damien may. Jess won't. Just my opinion.

Also, personally I feel this is the best season yet. Any other season chris murphy could have been at least top 2.

ps - to top it off, dean gets the touchdown of this season.

The public get it close to right, but usually not right on the money. Lets see what happens over the next week.

Clikchic just informed me that dean is also a virgin. And the way she said it made me feel like I've got something to worry about. And damien is who she thinks should win!

I thought from day one that he would sell albums. I stand behind that today. And at least he's a little bit rock. I'm over the pop vocal gymnastics.

AndyP

I didn't think Dean was anything special tonight, and I'm stuffed if I know where that touchdown came from tonight.

He improved from his last few weeks, but he should have been gone on Monday.

Meh, Dean's just a pretty boy.
Damien has a gift that can't be taught (in fact, he has never had vocal coaching until this comp).
Jess is still at that giggly stage. Give her a bit more time to mature, and she will be a genuine star, but not yet.

I'll be voting for Damien. 8-[

Is the fear keeping you awake at night?

I don't mind Idol, it can be entertaining and it's good for unintentional comedy. The whole Casey Donovan saga would have to appear in the top 5 of "greatest moments on Australian tv", right up there with the Paxtons. Of the three left the young guy should win it, he's the only one who could make a go of it. The chick will disappear like last year's chick, and the Irish bloke would only do well playing RSLs and bowls clubs performing old songs to old people.

Gotta disagree. Irish beat him on voice but deano was my pick for tonite (maybe it's something in the name). Irish does nothing for me, bores me to tears. Great voice tho, maybe the best they've ever had.

Favourite performances from idol for me so far, chris murphy with evie. The best idol performance so far from all season bar none. Also one of my favourite all time songs, and the only cd single in our cars stacker for almost a year now. Otherwise, deano with 'you give love a bad name', backflipping to 'turn the beat around' (the flips just caught me off guard), and then the one that told me he would be the hit of this season (regardless of winning or not) 'on the way down'.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

If it was a contest for the best voice, then damien has it hands down. I have no doubt his is a gift from god (if there is one). But a voice does not make a star. It makes a great backing vocalist. They want someone who will sell records and to me there is one left in the contest who will do that. Behind him my pick for next biggest seller out of this season is Lisa. No versatility, but she won't need that anymore.

And thanks for the compliment Courty. I never thought of myself as a 'pretty boy', but after checking in the mirror I think you're on the money. I might just have to go back and check myself out for another hour or so

Jess will never be a star (sorry, but I believe that, hope she makes me eat my words).

And McCoy, does the fear keep me awake at night? Only if she wins and I buy her album, then I might sweat at night worrying if one of my friends will ever see it in my cd collection.

I've never voted on idol before, but I will be tonight.

Anyone else hear Andrew G introduce Unchained Melody as the hit by the Self Righteous Brothers? Intentional???

Damien has a great voice - but I agree _ I don't think he will sell. Dean is a little cutie - has a good enough voice - and is just so marketable. Win or lose he should do well. I thought Jess last night was very boring - nothing new - seen it too many times. Great voice yes - but that ain't enough.

Dean to win - Damien will go tonight.

Golf_Novice
13th November 2006, 08:01 AM
Are you kidding me??

(IF) Dean wins it will only because he's a cute young guy.... does no one remember that in the Final 11 after he got bagged by the judges he came back with 'Well my voice isn't my strongest part!!" DUDE - It's a singing competition!!

I love Jess... I think she's been consistent and has never been in the bottom three.. Dean has been flying around the bottom two for some time now. I think all the little teenie boppers that have been voting for him have just got their phone bills and their parents are flipping out!! Therefore I think he will go tonight!

Damien is good! But if it comes down to Jess and Damien in the final two (which it will!) Jess will win because she's younger (has the high school vote) and has no family! This is just Magni (Rockstar Supernova) all over again!

Either way, they will all sell at least one albumn and then Casey Donovan will eat them!! hehe :)

Unfortunately I have to disagree with you here GN. Idol is anything but just a singing contest. If it was wardrobe would mean nothing. If it was engaging the audience, stage performance etc would have no value. The judges even point out whether contestants are performing to the cameras or not. It's about a whole package.

If singing ability was all that sold records, the spice girls would never have exhisted. Shannon noll was top 2 and is easily the most successful product of any idol series so far. I'm sorry for bringing him up again, but he is the perfect example of what this contest is about. It's about a package that can sell records. This is all my personal opinion; Jess dosen't have it, damien may have it, dean does. Kyle has brought up that it's about selling records.

I agree that dean dosen't have the best voice in the contest, maybe even the worst of the 12. But this isn't a singing contest. That's what estiedford's are for.

AndyP
13th November 2006, 08:22 AM
I think you've got real issues with the Spice Girls, goughy.

Dean hasn't shown that he can be consistently good. If he wins, they may as well not have had the series, because it would have been decided before they even stepped on stage.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. The best chance they have of having a successfull idol winner will be if dean wins.

The reason I use the spice girls as examples, is because most of them can't hold a note to save their lives. Still one of (if not) the biggest girl group of all time.

I use shannon noll as an example because he is exactly what I am talking about. During the contest he had no stage presence, couldn't move to save his life, and was the worst singer out of the 12. Yet he is the biggest success story of idol so far. When I first saw him, I figured he'd be top 2 and would be a hit. There was nothing difficult about it. Just have to look at the music industry.

If I'm proven wrong then so be it. We won't know until dean is either a success or not (regardless of whether he wins idol or not). And for the first time I have voted.

AndyP

The reason I use the spice girls as examples, is because most of them can't hold a note to save their lives. Still one of (if not) the biggest girl group of all time. With Posh being the exception, they weren't stunners either. So what is your point? Songwriting and marketing can sell records for anyone?

I don't think Shannon was as bad as what you make out either.

What we think makes no difference anyway. Who should win and who will win are two different things. Casey Donovan and Kate Lerouge (sp? care factor?) are proof of that.

Wrong, it's a popularity contest loosely based on singing ability and strongly influenced by the judges comments.

Pretty boy Dean (Geyer, not Gough ;)) is out of the comp, but he'll be in our living rooms sooner than we think.

goughy
13th November 2006, 09:45 PM
Goughy blew his dough.

My dough's not blown until jess or damien are a bigger success in the market place than dean.

And a first on aussie idol (at least) a contestant is told that sony is going to offer him a contract. The nearest previous to that is one of the contestants being told by kyle that if they weren't signed in a week or two then he'd give them a record contract (can't remember who though, might have been dredlock dan actually).

I am a bit harsh on shannon. But I'm only comparing him to 10 or 12 other people. Not all of australia.

And I wonder how truely successful guy is too. His album is No.4 at the moment, but I haven't seen it in a shop yet. Of course the rankings are taken on sales from the parent company to the shops, not based on sales from the shops to the public. Hence casey and kate both had no.1 albums (I'm sure they did), but there were always full racks of their cd's in the shops.

And to confound you all, Kate was my favourite from last season, and the one I hoped would win.

I 'spose we all just look for different things from these contests. I sit very much in the kyle position - I look for who can sell in the market. Who has the whole package ready to go. Very rarely have I disagreed with anything he's said. I just look at it analytically.

Not sure about your dough comment. I don't think your money is going towards his future record.

I'm not saying he won't sell records or the most of them. He just doesn't deserve to win based on his performances.

goughy
13th November 2006, 09:56 PM
We'll agree to disagree.

I'm not unhappy with the result. It was close to call, and I think the top 2 are well deserved their spot.

I doubt I will buy his record, unless it is heavily rock. And I haven't boght a cd in years if that's anything to go by.

I also think mark should have kept his mouth shut. But I don't think it was an idol (ha ha) comment. Mark has a lot of respect in the industry, and I don't htink the head of sony picks the talent all that much. I think it was a very significant event; it has taken a bit of shine off of tonights result. And the significance seemed to dawn on dean towards the end of his performance tonight.

What did Mark say? I don't watch the Monday show, as it has very little entertainment value.

goughy
13th November 2006, 10:29 PM
On the sunday show he made the comment after dean's second song - 'Lord Dennison (head of sony), if your watching sign this guy if he dosen't win', at least it was to effect that.

Tonight, litterally as soon as dean's name was read out, he asked for quite. He then said that he got a call from Lord Dennison of sony and that tomorrow they will be offering him a contract.

It just took a little shine off the fact that jess and damien will be fighting it out for a contract next week, but dean is getting one tomorrow (if he wants). Just thought he should have told him later. During his performance tonight it seemed to 'dawn' on dean the inormatity of what mark had said.

terryand
13th November 2006, 10:51 PM
I think holden said it to try and save face after he did all but give Dean the win last night.

FWIW is think Damien has more talent in his left n#t then dean has.
Sure it might not be just a "sing contest" but when I'm listening to music,99% of the time I can't see the person when you are listening to the song,so who cares what they looks like.

Watched last night - how good was Guy . I thought that his performance was unreal. I will be buying his CD this afternoon. What did you people think?

I agree - Damien and Jess are great singers - but no personality - and being a great entertainer ain't just about the voice.

I saw Guy Sebastian in concert in September and he was awesome. I have enjoyed his music all along. Guy was actually a guest singer at the Young Diva's concert. It was an intimate setting at the Sydney Casino and it was one of the best concerts I've been too.. All the girls together had awesome voices, yet they can also hold it on their own.

I think the only disappointing thing to come out of idol to date was Casey Donovan. Instead of being in the papers for her voice, she's in them for her weight.

But really - I don't think some of these 'kids' understand the fact of instant popularity status and the responsibilities that come with it.

Milsy - with Paris Hilton.
That girl (can't remember her name - original Rock Chick) co-hosted Video Hits until a bad night, got drunk and slagged off Guy Sebastian. She's never to be heard of again.
Shannon Noll - Drink driving. Accidents drinking & driving his ride-on
Axle Whitehead - Flopping his 'whitehead' out at the Aria Awards. Never to be heard of again.

Watch out for the spotlight!

You are the first couple of people I know that have any interest in guy. He did a concert up here at our carnival of flowers. He was supported by paulini and she was supported by vanessa amarosi. The goss was that more people saw vanessa than the other 2. I know several that left as soon as vanessa was finished. Now that girl can sing.

I do wonder how many of the people who are voting for these people on idol will end up buying their cd.

Casey was apparently dropped by the label not long after the flop of her cd. She had a great voice. I had shivers when she sung katie noonan and george songs. Another case of a great voice but not much else to sell.

I now hope damien wins. I mean heck, even daniel o'donnell sells records in australia.

Idol related music has spent a total of 34 weeks at number one in the ARIA charts.
2006 - 3 weeks (Lee Harding)
2005 - 9 weeks (Anthony Callea, Kate DeAraugo, Lee Harding)
2004 - 17 weeks (Guy Sebastion, Shannon Noll, Paulini, Cosima, Joel Turner, Casey Donovan, Anthony Callea)
2003 - Guy Sebastian, Idol Final 12

I bet nearly all of them debuted there too......

No, actually. I was looking at something else on wikipedia, which lead to ARIAs, and number one singles.
I didn't go hunting for that stuff.

I don't know if anyone else keeps one of these baby books where you mark down milestones and shit, but I had to find out what the number one song was when Mitchell was born a few years ago. It was Shannon Noll: "What about me".

I wonder if an Idol contestant will have the number one song in March next year.

The figures are falsly inflated though to some degree. They are based on sales from record companies to the stores (ie sanity), not on the sales from sanity to the general public. That's how someones cd can debut at number 1 when not even in the morket place for a week.

But don't get me wrong here. I have barely missed an episode of idol since half way through the first aussie season, including the american ones. I love the show and always hope that the public will make the right choice. And personally, I think they get it pretty close. Not much more you can ask for.

My only real disagreement is that I consider it far from a singing contest, and that I believe that in most seasons so far the best singer dosen't deserve to be the winner. But it's just my take on it.

Where's jarro - shouldn't he be taking the piss out of us by now??

Jess - Her handicap is her age and she's still a little immature. But has an awesome voice for someone who's 16

Damien - His handicap is his age. He's 30, married, kids, etc and not really what 12 - 16 year ods (the age of the voters) will look for. His other handicap.. HIS TEETH!! But again, has an awesome eery voice!

Didn't he sing an elvis song? Sorry, but that's about it. I barely turn my head to watch when he's on. At no time did I deny he had a great voice. But I also find him boring. Sorry 'bout that.

Dean's break through was 'you give love a bad name'. He followed that with some backflipping with 'turn the beat around'. The following week he produced his first touchdown with a fantastic 'on the way down' including throwing the guitar 2/3 of the way through. Was a fantastic performance. On jazz night he sang mustang sally.

I think it was a john mayer song (fairly current) in his last week as well as a song not heard in australia, but meant a lot to him (unlike Jess who had no idea what the song 'to sir with love' was about). Didn't he get a touchdown for it too. Unfortunately I am the worst person for remembering things like names and inparticular song names.

We will simply have to disagree on the purpose of the contest. I don't believe it is a singing contest. I believe it is a contest to find a talent who will sell albums and have a chance at a career. I believe that Dean is the one who will do that. He isn't the best singer. I've never questioned that. But in my opinion jess will disappear into obscurity and considering the judges only barely considered damien for the top 24 based solely on whether they could sell his looks, I just don't know. But as I said earlier, daniel o'donnell sells cd's in australia so stranger things have happened!

You haven't heard of Hillsong? Christian music. Very, very big.

GN - Hillsong is an evangelical church run out of Sydney - but if you're up early enough, they have a show on TV. They sell hundreds and thousands of albums. There is one woman who has sold more albums than Delta

They also run an annual conference in Sydney where they pack out the Superdome - at least 20,000 people

 OHHH!!!! Are they Christian music or those born-again types???

Mutto was part of a very Christian band - didn't look as though he would fit in a band like that...

I reckon I know why Dean went so cr@p at one stage... I think he lost the BIG V!!!!

GN - I'm not sure - but it's very Christian music. MarkTheBlake could tell us more if he ever came back :)

And Casey Donovan did? ;)

No, and that's the point I'm making. I don't think the australian public isn't getting it right. And that will be proven when third place outsells and outlasts 1st and 2nd this year.

Face it, dreadlock dan could yet be the biggest thing from last season.

Dan England? What has he done? He's toured as support for Shannon Noll...

Go the Young Diva's!!

Hillsong - lyrically, very Christian. In terms of 'corporate' worship music, world leaders. The woman Amanda is referring to is Darlene Zschech.
Style - contemporary, but there are different components. For example Hillsong United is aimed more at the 18-25 market.

They ain't singin' Kum-ba-Yah no more.

Bought the new Young Diva's cd last night... 12 covers - no originals. Was quite surprised by that!! But, if I remember correctly, when I saw them in concert they only sang covers except their own original individual songs. But I still thought they would of written one original (or had it written for them) to perform. Hmmm... bit still enjoying it :)

Rachelle, just bought the CD and she loves it. It is driving me nuts hearing it all over and over again.

I love it too and I only got it last night... but I did think there would of been at least ONE original!! Did she comment on that???

Well, don't know how much exactly was backing track, but when the young diva's performed tonite I found it a bit annoying that at the end when one was singing and the other 3 were 'whoa whoa whoa'ing' the other 3 had their mike's were down by their hips.

Well.. whatever happened to Australian Idol ? I didn't mind Damien, but did want Jess to win... but last night when they announced that Damien isn't even an Australian citizen, I was appalled!! So what are the conditions of enterring???? You just have to live here?

Hmmm... well good luck to both. I just hope they both go better than Dean!

Permanent residency would be the minimum criteria.

Heard damien's single on the radio this morning. Dean's first should be out early next year. He'll knock both of them for 6.

But I'm glad D won. If I'd have voted it would have been for him.

I did think that with the whole NT voting for jess that she would flog him.

Looks like I was wrong. Jess is releasing an album any day now. And how exciting and original - it is an album of allthe songs she performed during idol and includes a dvd of the performances from the show. I can't wait

You just can't wait for Dean's album (if there is one) so you can get all mushy over him again.
