Well I am into my first day off the smokes:twisted: .......wish me luck. Bought the patches and nicorette gum on the way home last night. Had my last taste of sweet sweet nicotine laden smoke at 1036 last night:cry: . Has taken a while but I reached the point where I knew I had to give up.

It helped when I realised I was the only person at the champs having a puff.

Damn this gum tastes like utter shite:smt104 .

Good luck, you've made a good decision for yourself and your family.

Drink more alcohol to compensate, dc.yep, the absolute MOST time you will want a fag, you would smoke twice as much when drinking I reckon.

I gave up cold turkey 2 and a half years ago, and still feel like a smoke every month or so. The feeling never leaves. When I say cold turkey, my boss bought me patches and stuff and day 2 I forgot them. I was a nervous wreck but somehow got through, and haven't smoked since....

Only put on about 10kgs so far :(

How much do you estimate you would save in a year? (I have no idea how much cigarettes cost these days)

I'd say you should definitely speak to Perci about that putter - it was fairly awesome on the first 9 holes :)

dc68
1st November 2006, 03:25 PM
$12 a day

amanda
1st November 2006, 03:29 PM
My god - $4,380 a year - that would probably pay for a new set of clubs, bag, putter PLUS accomodation, green fees, alcohol, cards night buy in at next year's champs

And still leave heaps left over :)

And I bet the odds of your kid ever smoking have gone down now that he won't ever see you do it. Just think of that if you ever need inspiration.

Do you think giving up the smokes will make you less ugly?

Do the people around you still smoke? If so, any chance of getting one of them to give up too, so you can support each other?
If other people are smoking around you, it would be tough, I'd imagine.

That is so good. Just keep at it. One day at a time - and all those other old sayings. But you gotta give them up DC - you just gotta. They will kill ya.
I gave up 8 years ago the night before John went in for his first lot of radiation. He wasn't a smoker and he got cancer. I was a smoker and I didn't. He hated that I smoked so I thought I at least owed him that. I've never smoked again - and never wanted to. If you can't give up for yourself - give up for someone you really love - me!!!!!!!:smt002

Avoid the booze until you're over the worst of it. It just makes you weaken and do things you know you shouldn't do. ( or is that just me)

damoocow

Dave - keep on fighting.....I used to smoke 50 a day [seriously] until had enough of the cost about 8/9 yrs ago - tried everything , even hypnosis.eventually got prescription patches which I did not expect to work - it was tough the first week or so and then I set about trying to fail so I could have another smoke.....I bought a six pack and sat down and drank them quick so I would get pissy quickly and really feel like a ciggie ........I still do not know how it worked ............ but got pissed quick smart [think sculling] and didn't need a smoke at any stage - it was then I knew I had cracked it!!
keep fighting the good fight...........
PS - this sounds like a wind up but is true - a mate of mine used to smoke 150 a day - no kidding.......he would smoke in the shower.........he got real sick and managed to quit - he is still alive...that is a miracle.

The above post aside (I was joking, by the way), its great to see you making a genuine effort to stop smoking. My dad has been smoking for approximately forty years now, and it has become a traditional that each Christmas he will state "I am giving up smoking in the new year." Unfortunately, it is yet to happen.

Flowergirl

This is really sad! I'm sorry but it is. One of my best friends just started again, after having been off of them for a long long time (several years). He'd split from his wife and then after about a year she wanted back so they got back together. She was a heavy smoker and he picked it up again. Now that he's kicked he out again he's still smoking, but at least it'll only affect him.

Apart from the fact you have a son who you appear to love and I'm guessing he loves you, you do realise what this will do to him one day. Firstly he'll be more likely to smoke one day. And don't tell me you don't do it around him. When he's old enough to understand fully about smoking he'll know you're doing it. He'll smell it on you, he'll see the signs. And he's gonna be more likely to take it up himself.

Maybe you'll live to be 80. But if you do, I bet he doesn't. Then again, it'll probably get you too.

Man up and take responsibility for something that will have a dire affect on others, most notably your son . Forget about yourself for a change.

Is it time for us to bombard sms you. I'm happy to do it! Just pull your f'n finger out. And spend that cigarette money on your son. He'll be spoiled off the planet but he'll probably live longer for it!

15 days without a smoke today for me, walked 18 holes yesterday without feeling like i was gonna die afterwards\\:D/

Interesting discovery:

Bacteria change causes ex-smoker weight gain after quitting: research

From:AFP
August 30, 2013 9:21AM
NERVOUS nibbles alone do not explain the weight that people tend to gain when they give up smoking, Swiss researchers say, turning the spotlight instead on a bacterial shift in the intestines.

Studies have shown that quitting smoking leads to an average weight gain of four to five kilogrammes in the first year.
But according to researchers at Zurich University Hospital, former smokers who bulk up may not be eating more than before they kissed their cigarettes goodbye.
Noting that even people who cut back on calorie intake after quitting smoking tend to gain weight, Professor Gerhard Rogler said he and his colleagues had discovered another potential explanation - a change in the composition of the intestinal flora among smokers who kick the habit.
Their study, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation and published in peer-reviewed scientific journal PLoS One, found that when a person stops smoking, the diversity of bacterial strains in their intestines shifts.

It more resembles the gut flora found in people with obesity.

Both recent non-smokers and obese people tend to have more of two bacteria types, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, Rogler said.
These germs are believed to use energy more efficiently and break down otherwise indigestible fibres - and as a result, more of what the person eats is transformed into fat rather than excreted as waste.

The researchers studied the genetic profile of intestinal bacteria found in faecal samples provided by 20 volunteers over nine weeks.
The participants comprised five non-smokers, five smokers and 10 people who had quit smoking one week after the study began.
Little difference was seen in the bacterial biodiversity among the persistent smokers and non-smokers.
But among those who had just given up smoking, there was a clear shift towards more Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, the study showed.

Over the study period, the people who had quit smoking also gained an average of 2.2 kilos, even though they insisted that their eating and drinking habits were unchanged
