View Full Version : Top 100 Courses - tick them off

Playing at Kennedy Bay the weekend before last got me thinking... how many current Top 100 (Public Access) courses (http://www.ausgolf.com.au/2006australia's50.htm) have you played?

My list is pretty sparse:

2. Kennedy Bay (W.A.)
19. Paradise Palms (QLD)
47. Links (QLD) - now known as Sea Temple

I'll be looking to add to this list by hopefully playing Brooky next month.

Cypress Lakes

Bribie Island
Coffs Harbour

Will have to add a few when they get added to the top 100 list too.

I maintain my own list. Here are the courses I've checked off from 2006 Golf Digest's Top 100 (http://www.ausgolf.com.au/2006top100.htm) (which aren't just the public access courses):

29 The Dunes, Vic

Andrew - have you played all 100 of them?

No. There are some towards the end that I just can't be bothered with.
If I'm in Melbourne, I'm not going to worry about playing Beaconhills when I can play some of the better sandbelt clubs for free.

I do better on the AGD list, having covered most bar 1 or 2.

It's always interesting to see the movement from one year to another, even though, in most cases, the courses haven't changed.

Moe Norman
1st November 2006, 09:14 PM
i assumed you'd have played all of them at least once, but you're right, unless you spend months on end in Melbourne, Beaconhills isn't exactly worth a game.

I'm trying to play more of the non-public. And some of them are miles away. It takes a lot brownie points to get down to the peninsula whereas I can spend 1 or 2 and play Woodlands or YY.

It wasn't by choice Moe. That was the 'public' course on the day we went there for the Vic matchplay day. I think 11 'members' played the beach that day. A tragic waste.

edit: Of course I meant the beach that was wasted on 11 players that day. Although not many more played the creek. We had the place pretty much to ourselves.

Hmmm. Which one was that again? Was it the one with the uphill tee shot hiding a smallish valley of spindly grass leading up to a green with a huge sand dune behind? Can't quite remember which order the holes were in, but according to the scorecard, I made bogey on 11. :???:

I have a definate one with bribie island. Is 'club pelican' pelican waters; if so then make that 2. And if Terry can tell me whether our game at Indroop all those years ago was east or west course, then I may in fact have 3.

Where's Toowoomba Golf Club? I would have thought it still deserved a top 100. It's picturesque enough. Even if city was worthy to be on that list it never would make it. Surely you couldn't have a course on the list where the a snapshot of the golf course residential lifestyle would include a 150kg guy wearing only a pair of stubbies sitting in a vinyl recliner in his backyard wearing a 'beer can holding cap' and fishing for guppies in a kids inflatable pool!!!!!

I've played 16 courses on that list.

The sad thing is that unless I go to Mt Broughton, Gold Creek or to the Gold Coast for my next holiday, I won't be crossing any others off for a while.

I'll leave it to ISG to argue about some of the rubbish courses on the list, and some that missed out.

Just adding the New 2007 List http://ausgolf.com.au/australias-top-100-public-access

With St Michaels added, I'm now up to 32 courses from this list.

As for the courses played from the 2006 Golf Digest's Top 100 (http://www.ausgolf.com.au/2006top100.htm), I've added Bonville, St Michaels and Newcastle to get my count up to 27. Pacific Harbour and Magenta Shores will definitely be on the 2008 list, but Mollymook, Yowani and Robina Woods are only just inside the 100 and may drop out.

Mollymook tends to ebb & flow on those lists. I've seen it out one year & in the mid 70's two years later without anything changing. You may find it stays in there.

Yowani deserves to be outside the 100, being that it was ranked far to high 6 or 7 years ago due to the work that had been done on the back nine. Since then, they haven't really kicked on.

Unfortunately, Robina will probably go, but it's still a reasonable course.

Hopefully with the tree removal program about to start at St Mick's, they will hold their place.

After playing both Joondalup and Vines last week for the first time I have become even more disillusioned with lists like these. Really didn't enjoy either course. They seemed to have it all, name architect... conditioning...facilities etc, but just plain crap. Of the WA courses in the list I really only enjoy Secret Harbour. Kennedy Bay is excellent, but a course that hard is difficult to call enjoyable.

My problem is that I'm happy to play in a sheep paddock and putt into wombat holes! With the exception of last years champs, the most I've paid for a game of golf is about $50, for club pelican and including the cart!!

I'm not a student or really even and enthusiast in the study of courses. I just wanna get out and walk around with some mates or even total strangers. And because of that I just don't get out to the '100' courses in my region.

That’s not a good enough excuse, Goughy. At the moment your list is going backwards.

It sounds like you are letting dead-end pursuits like family & friends tie you down. Leave those hangers-on in your dust & get out there & play some of that over-priced, over-rated swampland we call public access golf. Not only will it help you lose weight (in your wallet), but if you have never spent a drunken night in the arms of a cheap prostitute & felt the remorse the next morning, then spending over $100 to play Hope Island is the next best thing.

I know a guy who, after holing out at the 6th at The Dunes told his group to go ahead while he watched the next 5 or 6 groups play the hole just to see if the 'fall away' green fed every shot to the same spot at the back of the green.

And no, it wasn't me, but I do get along with him quite well.

The Cut is the most overrated course on that list. If it was a guide for top 6 holes on a course or 6 dumbest holes on a course, The Cut woudl rate highly on both.

Joondalup is fun, but can be rediculous at the same time. I like it, but can see how some would absolutely hate it. Think American resort course on steriods.

Kennedy will be played by me this afternoon, provided the rain stops. No flags yet, but still maintained to a playable condition.

Joondalup is so ridiculous it doesn't feel like a "real" golf course to me. Resort golf is really, really, really not my style.
I haven't played the Cut yet, like most of Perths golfers. But Golfbox has a $79 18 hole/shared cart thing which might get me down there. Which if only for 6 great holes, will still be worth it and a damn sight better than paying $150.

That's a good deal if you've never played it. My brief course review goes as follows.
Hole 1 is ok, crazy (dumb) green.
2 and 3 are the same hole.

4-9 are ok, but forgettable. They will be decent with about 20years maturity.
10 is good, but make sure you hit it long or your blocked on the corner.
11 is the worst designed golf hole ever.
12 is AWESOME! Something you would expect to find on Pebble Beach. Just grab driver and hit it on the left edge of the dunes on the right and you'll be fine. Confusing tee shot if you don't know what to do.
13 ok, but the bad tees are DANGEROUSLY close to the 12th green. We were actually commenting on that the first time we played when a ball landed at my feet.
14 is great.
15 is a 500 metre par 5 that doglegs right at 490. Very.. interesting design.
16 Neat downhill par 3, I love it but some wouldn't.
17 is the dumbest designed hole in the world, this side of 11.
18 is a great finisher.

I take back my 6 great holes and will make it 4 with 2 pretty good holes.

Played Newcastle and The Vintage over the weekend - The Vintage is suffering a bit from age and lack of money being spent on the course. It has matured a lot since I last played it (6 years ago) however it is looking tired.

Newcastle is just an outstanding course. Best greens I've played on in years. 5-6-7 is a brutal yet beautiful run, but I loved the back 9. Better course than Metro (which I played in March - probably better manicured but nowhere near as good a design), not quite as good as NSW (best course I've played).

My List (GD Top 100):

2. NSW
6. Royal Adelaide
7. Metro
13. Kooyonga
15. Newcastle
18. Royal Canberra
21. Turtle Point
23. The Lakes
24. Magenta

61. Lakelands
67. Macquarie Links
83. Kooralbyn (RIP)

97. Mollymook
100. Tallwoods

We multi-tyne the greens every week. That means we stab the crap out of them, insert sand in the holes & roll them. The next day it is barely noticeable. It means we will only core once this year & may not at all in future years.

I was seriously impressed with the state of the course given it was the middle of winter and the amount of rain Newcastle has had the week prior, the greens were just pure. Not a bad lie on the fairways, rough was perhaps a little thin but I have no problems with that given the time of year. I seriously can't wait to play it again.
