jaster
28th April 2004, 09:39 PM
I wanted the lofts more than anything else and the bounce is just the way they are designed....the 54 has 10 degrees as it is like an old style Sand Wedge but I only use it as a gap wedge (110m and in)....and the 60 has 8 degrees as this makes it more versatile around the green off thin lies, bunkers etc etc I actually would prefer only 4 degrees like the Cleveland wedges but Titleist do not have this option :( Well not for us leftys anyway

I've got 3* bounce on my 60* which is about the only club I use from the sand. But I think I could use just a little bit more, but not too much.

If you're playing in light fluffy sand that is reasonably deep then a higher bounce might help. But most of the courses I've played the sand is not that great (and pretty shallow) and a mid bounce can work pretty good.

Ryan

Picked up the 2-iron this morning and had a look around the golf shop as we all usually do. Managed to pick up what I believe is a real bargain.

Titleist 975D 9.5° with a Grafalloy Prolite 35-s Shaft for $99. There are a few scratches on the sole and a little chipped paint around the hosel but all in all in good condition (7.5-8 out of 10?). It even came with the original Tileist Headcover.

This is the first time that I have bought a graphite shafted driver but the feel in the nets was very solid indeed. I will report to the group once I have had the chance to play a couple of rounds.

Any advice on graphite shaft care would be appreciated, especially how to get the price tag off without damaging the shaft.

Senecio, that driver/shaft is a great combo :D . I have an 8.5D with a prolite 35s in it that I have kept because it is such a soild feeling club 8) . Every now and then I take it out and use it and am always surprised at how long it hits compared to what I use now. Almost as long, just a lot harder to find that sweetspot.

Still have my first real driver which was a 9* cobra deep face with a proforce 75S. It just looks so damn small these days I'm not even game to try and hit it. Also had the 975f before. A lot of guys bag them, but I thought it was a great club.

Senecio - great pickup with that 975D!! 8) 8) 8) I had same loft and shaft as you and prmeier up until a year ago. Great stick. I sold mine for $200, so you got a good deal. Those shafts are great even still. I went with the Grafalloy Blue S in my current driver (975JVS) and it feels very similar.

Terence - where did you get the idea for having 3-7i the same length? Is it an MOI thing?

kwantfm
27th May 2004, 08:05 AM
Hi Amanda,

A few guys in the US are doing the one length iron set thing. If you have a single length set of clubs with all of the component parts being of equal weight then the set will naturally be matched to moment of inertia, total static weight and swing weight.

The mildly difficult matter is to match the set frequency so that the stiffness is equivalent for all of the clubs.

Cheers,
Terence

Terence - where did you get the idea for having 3-7i the same length? Is it an MOI thing?

amanda - it's a great concept, and one that I think many should have...

it's easier hitting a 3 iron that setsup like a 7 iron IMO...

but I guess if they start making 2-3-4 irons easy to hit, they (OEM) can't sell hybrids anymore...

btw, Tommy Armour came out with the E.Q.L. system (3-Sw @ 6iron length), so this is not a new concept...
it was just a pity that the EQL came out the same time as the 845s (when both Couples and Love were blitzing with them!)

markTHEblake
27th May 2004, 02:56 PM
Under MOI the longer irons loses distance and the shorter irons gain distance.

I guess you could change the loft, but then that also affects the bounce, on longer irons that seems to me to make them harder to hit.

getting the shafts frequency matched is easy for a skilled clubmaker

although it has been around a long time, the school of thought on MOI is still out there. A few knowledgable people that have spoken to dont think much of it, if it was that great, everybody would be using it :-)

Why is this the case? I certainly haven't found that with my two sets of irons (one being MOI matched and standard length).

I should have clarified that I was using Nippon shafts which are pre cut... therefore had to think a tiny bit to soft step the right amount for the weights which eventually came out in my longer irons.

Terence,

The longer irons in a standard swingweight matched set are swung at higher clubhead speed than the shorter irons. Thus the distance spread is determined by both the loft of the club and the clubhead speed.

If you have all the clubs at same length with the same headweight, then you'll naturally want to swing every club at the same swingspeed. Thus, the only factor determining the distance spread is the loft. As Blakey suggested, if you keep the lofts the same, the distance spread will tend to get narrower.

However, there is one more factor we need to consider. The quality of strike. Us amateurs may get better, more consistent center hits with long irons cut to the same length as a 7 iron. If this is the case, it will compensate somewhat for the decreased clubhead speed. Also, the added confidence with the longer irons may mean that we can swing it harder and achieve greater clubhead speed.

In the end, I think it is the case of whatever works for the individual ... :D

There's something about being able to put together the perfect head with the perfect shaft. You can add a little weight here, trim a little there. Experiment to your heart's content.

Imagine if you could do the same sort of customization with women ... I shouldn't really say that, should I? Ooops, too late.

Nick, I have a Wishon PCF head, 60* bent to 58*, used about 4 times. Tried it, preferred my Cleveland gun metal 58*. Still have the PCF 52* in the bag and love it. If you have a shaft, head is yours for say $30...

Quick question - if you bend a head (in this case from 60 -> 58 ), is there any sense in bending it back? Eventually you're just compromising the equipment aren't you?

I wouldn't mind bagging a 60* (or around that mark) - but i find my 56 very versatile, so don't think that 58* is enough variance. Then again, i really have NFI with all the different wedge flavours... :smt017

I'm too anal to bend my wedges, as I don't want to bend them to something different to what is indicated on the sole.

As for your question, I'm not sure of the answer, but I'm sure there would be a limit to the amount of times you could bend a club. Although a couple of bends may not compromise the club.

I use a 52* then 60*. The 60* covers me from 60ish mtrs in, all but the longest of bunkers etc etc. The 52* does about 90mtrs in and chipping etc.

I really just never found a need to hit anything I had in between those 2, so I pulled it.

And I don't want to limit myself with a 58*. I want a 60* to hit the soft lob shots better etc etc. I can keep it down low enough on chip shot too. It's just so versatile.

Nice one, goughy. 8) But do they have to look so ugly. :P

Incoming: TM RAC 54° Chrome Wedge

I don't mind the industrial look of them. I remember playing in a group with a guy who had I3 blades when they first came out and they were sweet. When I first got into components I almost bought some dynacraft irons that were based on the i3's, even with a similar finish.

The other side of it is I gotta start using something more forgiving than virtual blades.

That rac wedge isn't coming from speirsy is it. I was thinking about it also, but I'm hitting my 52 so well why would I bother.

The 704s are beautiful. I tried the blades but just couldn't feel confident with the really thin top line in the long irons. I'm not a big bloke so with a blade like club getting them out of the rough worried me. Okay I'll admit it, I like a slightly chunky iron. The 704s are the perfect blend of cavity forgiveness and forged feel for mine. If anyone gets the opportunity to hit the Sonartec NP-99 do so. They are simply unbelievable. I have seriously been considering leaving the driver out of the bag lately and carrying an extra wedge or a 2 iron. The latest Golfer magazine says they are released here in Oz in November and will reatil for $649 but I got mine for less than half that via the US.
McW, I've worked hard to build up my dream bag and I play off 7. I'll let you decide whether that's "decent". :?

That's the way to go, IMHO. My bag is pretty mixed as well. It's hard to find a set of irons where you like the feel of EVERY club. I love the feel of my short irons in my current set, mid irons are OK, the long irons suck. so replaced the long irons with hybrids, and I'm in the process of replacing the mid irons as well.

Definately, I don't spin the ball heaps, but the ball always bounce's and stops, even when hit out of the rough.... And they don't shred the ball at all, my irons on the other hand have some sharp grooves that do cut into the ball, but not the wedges.....

Trihot is in my Dads Bag. Had the mezza in the bag for 2 years now and the SMT was ditched for the 510 about 18 months ago too.

Thinking about duplicating 2iron to 5 or 6 with the 303 cavities while I'm not playing much and as I start to play more and hit it a bit more consistently bring the blades back in.
