View Full Version : Swingweight in clubs??

So, I'm doing a bit of fiddling with the feel of my clubs. And want to learn more about how to set up the swingweight of a set of clubs, and what might work best for me?
I've used the weight and balance point method to go through some of my clubs. Some I hit ok, some not so much, and some I have issues with the feel of the club.
I've checked through some of my clubs, and my Driver and 4 wood (at 43.5") are both about D1. My 3 wood (43") which I'm stuggling with is at D3. Ping says my irons should be all C9, and of the ones I've checked they vary from C7.9 to C9.6. My 3 iron I've been struggling with a big draw to hook, and was at C8.4 and I've added some lead tape into the toe of the cavity and it's about D1 now, and feels better. My SW is at D4.

I've been reading and wondering if C9 is too light in my irons? I'm also trying to adjust my swing; shortening the backswing to prevent over swinging etc. Could a change in swingweight help me feel that better? And I've also noticed, when looking online, that by the shorter clubs the swingweight seems to be increasing these days?

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this sort of stuff? I have some more lead tape on the way so gonna play around a little.

Virge might pop in, but gee C SW sounds awfully light imo!
most are around D2 stock, but nowadays it’s all about lighter shafts to increase speed etc but you still need to feel like you’re swinging something and the club head imo…
Each to their own I guess….

What irons/shaft combo are they….

Honestly the whole issue of whether swingweight is important is one that only you can answer. I went down that rabbit burrow a few years back and experimented a lot (with heaps of lead tape). And came to realisation that swing weight really made no difference to me at all.

My current clubs are all over the shop in terms of swingweight and I genuinely cannot tell the difference .... other people claim to be able to pick between D3.5 and D4.

Yeah, I'm that person who would say, "don't ask me about clubs, I know shit and can tell less!"

My driver is a G10 10.5° w project X stiff
3 wood TE Exotics ex9 w ozik MFS red tie S
4 wood TM Vsteel w speeder 57 S
Irons are Ping i3+ w CS Lite S
SW is Ping Tour W w AWT S.

I'd bet those people are the same ones that can hear a butterfly fart and be put off their shot.

With the LZ shafts the i3 blades sat at D0/1., so yes the easier to hit plus with the CS light properly came out in the upper C. Think the i3s used weighted badges to change SW

Karsten was a beleiver in most golfers been better off with stiffer lighter shafts, typically SW in the high C's, so thats why your irons are about that.

It does seem though that today the swing weights have gone up! Even in Pings, most are around D0 to D1, up to D2 for players clubs. And most increase the swing weight by .5 for the 9i, 1 for the pw etc.
Even Callaway and TM, most irons seem to be at D2.
My irons are the newest irons I've ever hit, so don't really have anything to compare with, of course.

Just swingweighted my i3+ withnKBS Tours in them and they are D0
So looks like the old pings where on the light side anyway…l

my 4 iron is D2, and each one increases by approx 0.5 SW progressively (or more) so my PW is D5 and my Lob wedge is D8.
go figure!

Now, this is probably a crazy question (not my first, won't be my last), but is there a way to add weight down a shaft to increase the swing weight while you have the grip off?

I'm gonna try the hairspray regripping thing tomorrow, and I'm happy enough to use lead tape, but if there was some way to do it down the shaft, that would be cool!

You can use Tungsten Powder;

But I have never tried it, or had the need for it. I would use some lead tape first anyway, and swap later in need.

I have a set of Titleist T100 irons with AMT tour white shafts in them, any idea what the swing weight would be with those? All I know is they feel nice and light and easy to swing for me but not a clue what the actual swing weight is 🤣

I believe, standard setup is D2

Should be on the titleist website somewhere since that's the stock shaft option? I can't find anything on there, but according to my rough measurements and those calculators they're about D2.

Of all the new club sets we got into the shop, Titleist had the worst QA on swingweight. Honestly, they could be anything.

My ping i3+ ranged from about c7.9 to c9.6, and are speced as c9.

So I took some clubs down to the proshop to check their swing weights, and use that as an indicator of which calculator was more accurate?
But from what I saw, on the swingweight scale there is a different set of indicators for irons and wood?
The online calculators don't seem to differentiate between irons and woods, but using an online calculator my driver came out to about d3, but on the scale it was more like D1!. So should I be making some allowance for woods with the online calculators? I can't seem to find any info about all this online.

Neither Calculator takes into account variations in shaft or grip construction/weight. The longer the club the more potential for variations.

So, I tried to get my irons up to about D1 for the Leon day, but really didn't feel that comfortable with them.
So I went back to my fav club, my 8i, removed all the tape I applied and found where it was at, which was C8. I've then matched 3i to 8i, them got 9i to C8.5 and PW to C9.
My 56* was at D4, so have got my 60* (which I ground the shit out of) up to D4 and my chipper to about D4 too (it was like C6).
My driver is at D2.5 (with some lead tape for a face and done at the back to try to increase its launch.
My 4w, 21* hybrid and 2i were all at D1 natively.

So we'll see how that all goes!

I also found my 54* was at D5, so I'm going to, at some stage, get a tour lock weight for in the grip, probably 12g, to see if I can get it down around D3. Maybe a bit heavier one to get it to D2. My old Tour MB 54* was D2 and I like it, but never hit the 54* tour wedge that well. It's always felt off.I've ordered two new putter grips, so when I've regripped those and work out what extra weight I want in my SC counterbalance (I'm guessing 50g), I'll order the tour lock stuff I need. Currently that putter just had a bolt with some nuts on it shoved in the top of the shaft, but I can't remember how much it weighed.

I made this swongweight calculator 15 years ago, apparently. I dont even remember doing it, but someone might find it helpful. Just add in all the weights and measurements of the components and bingo

I assume this sharing link will work

Ok, so I'm reshafting a club head I have here. I originally shoved some weight down the shaft, and added lead tape to the head to get it to the sw I wanted.
Now that I'll be driving another what in it, can I just add weight to the shaft tip to get to the sw sand feel I'm after? Again, I haven't tested what the sw will come out to, but it did require a lot of weight. Is there a point where adding too much weight into the shaft tip affects the feel of the club, even if the sw is right? Or is it fine to do whatever I need?

I heard up to 10g tip weight is not significant enough to impact. Too much would drag COG towards heel.

That's what I was wondering about! I didn't know if the weight being in the shaft itself would have an effect on that or not.

The other thing to be considered is whether the shaft is counterbalanced which has an affect on swingweight.

KBS Tour iron shafts are, so are many modern graphite shafts for "woods".

Cool.
I just pulled a ping cs lite stiff shaft out of a wedge I'll no longer use, and am gonna stick my old carnagie clark 10i in it. Dry fit it came out to C8, which matches my irons. But I wanna get it out to at least where my 56* and 60* are, which is D4. And the Ping ChipR club is at E6....... and I think they know a little bit more about clubs and performance than me!
And then thinking of getting the proshop to see if they can bend it 2 to 3* weaker. I wanna increase the loft and also the bounce. But I have to be careful as this was one of my dad's favourite clubs.
