View Full Version : Greens in Regulation (Hcp 0 - 9)

Hi there everybody,

I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I'm only interested in responses from people with a single figure handicap.

One of my golf course architect friends is compiling some info regarding the amount of greens single figure markers hit per round. He already has stats from a couple of marketing surveys, but would like 3 more sources to gain a broader spectrum.

I'm helping him out from an Australian perspective. One of the sources he wanted me to use was a local forum. I felt this forum may give me more honest responses than some others.

This information will not be published.

Thanks for your help,

Andrew

Andrew, My handicap has been between 7 and 9 for over 2 years and my bigest problem is greens in reg :( I'm lucky to hit 8 regs in a round  hence I spend a lot of practice on my chipping. So you can see that takes it's toll over a round.

check my golf links history over the past 2 years :D

For me to get to 5 or better I would need to hit atleast 11 to 12

I would be interested to see what Terryand, GIR are during his slump and what they where when he was playing to a 5 regularly :smt102

Well i'll reply then ;)

For this year my average is exactly 10.0 per round for the 27 rounds that I have kept stats for.

To be really anal.....

The most I have hit is 14...the least is 6

Hope this helps

Hi, my name is BrisVegas, and I'm a terrible putter..... :smt006

However, I have always hit a lot of Fairways and Greens, allowing me to play between 3-6 over the past 5 years. I used to average almost 12 per round, but am now between 10 and 11 as I approach a 7 hcap.

I think there are two types of single figure players - Those that scramble well and those that don't. I definitely fall into the latter category. Those guys that scramble well and hit plenty of f'ways and greens are usually among the top amateurs.

I hit every green........ :smt023

Eventually :smt112 :smt043

Seriously though,I will work out what I am hitting now and then (ah memories) :smt086

I got it, and thought it was funny. I just don't want to push my luck by posting too many times in a thread that I am not allowed.

where I am the ugly chopper (off 10, going out fast) that has a solid scrambling game.

so what you are saying is that if you couldnt chip and putt you would be Golfer109?

Andrew, here are some numbers from a Stats program i have, which was compiled from 1000's of rounds by 100's of golfers - in england, so this should be a pretty good guide for you, and no doubt compares pretty well with the other figures your mate has.

Hcap % #

0 69.95 12.6
1 66.16 11.9
2 63.3 11.4
3 62.96 11.3
4 58.85 10.6
5 57.75 10.4
6 52.7 9.5
7 52.1 9.4
8 45.85 8.3
9 48.45 8.7

As for me here are my GIR and hcap at the end of each year.

1998 41.7% 4.8
1999 46.2% 5
2000 46.9% 4
2001 58.6% 3.9
2002 59.6% 4.8
2003 64.5% 4.8

Interesting question, why does he want to know? usually its meaningless to look at GIR alone (and when looking at Putts, saves and scoring in combination you can tell if the golfer is not being 'modest')

Marh the Blake,

Thanks for the response. My friend may have the survey you quoted as he is working for a British golf course design company.

The reason they are wanting the stats
They are contemplating changing their design philosophy on approach angles for lower hcp golfers. Many holes (not all) are designed to have multiple drive zones. Quite often the better drive is rewarded with the easier approach shot. Pete & Alice Dye have questioned that idea of late & my friends company are giving it some thought as well.

I could go on, but it tends to get a bit heavy.

The feedback I will send my friend will be from this site, from a survey done with 5 different pennant teams and from a company that runs golf tours.

I like that ! I am a short hitter (one of the disadvantages at not weighing 100+ kgs) and thats something I would like to see. My home course actually penalises the short hitter.

But I didnt think that this is a new philosophy, I would have thought it obvious that the longer the drive the tougher the landing zone becomes.

Andrew

Mark the Blake,

It's not the landing zone they are looking to penalise, but the approach. The longer drive is still often the tighter one, but how much reward should it receive. A long hitter has a PW approach with a clear green, but the shorter hitter has a 7i in hand with a bunker to carry to a diagonal green. Does risk and reward really come in to it when it is just a matter of strength?

It would not effect issues of strategy in width, only strategy in length.

I do not totally agree with what they are talking about, but it would only effect 2-3 hole per course.

I'll throw my numbers in.....but I guess I'm the worst ball striker in the bunch :?

I'm off 2 (been a rough month :P ) and I hit 59.03% (10.62) greens per round......
