2021 Eclectic

2021 Edition.

Rules below:

- For those unfamiliar, an eclectic score is your best gross score on each hole of your course over a given period of time.

- This Eclectic runs from 1 January to 31 December.

- Scores from any official club competition round (stroke, par, stableford) played during the dates above are permitted (no social rounds).

- To enter, you need to record the following:

- Course

- Length/ Index/ Pars of each hole

- Your gross scores for those holes

- As you play rounds during the year and improve on those gross scores, you need to post your improvements.

You can get a copy of my pre-formatted Google Sheets Eclectic here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1a_YEwUIsGIzLzaVM6fQnrYHi8jOETCe6W5OzbaoKrhA/copy). All you need to do is change the Course Name and Length, Par & Index for each hole (Google account required).

I "cheated" last year, because of the amount of social golf that I was playing, and not having a membership, so I just made it work for me. Plus, I'm pretty pedantic in social rounds anyway. Not that there are any prizes.

Unless something changes, I should have a full membership in a few months time, so I'll have a regular course.

This is great Courty!
It takes a bit of setting up but well worth it IMO. Here's my card after 6 rounds in 2021. A couple of things are pretty obvious from looking at the stats:
1. My first hole is abysmal (maybe I need to think iron off the tee here)
2. I'm prone to blowouts on a few holes a round (so better focus on damage control would be a good idea)
3. for a 12 'capper, I need to start making a few birdies (I'm rebuilding my putting stroke this year so we'll see if this stat improves)

Four rounds at Wolston Park so far, but I haven't joined just yet. I finally had a decent round there in the most recent which added a few birdies. I still need to clear out the bogeys, which may rely on a good up and down, and there are plenty of birdies that are gettable.

A birdie on 7 a couple of weeks ago. I'm still looking for pars on 5 and 17, which will probably require getting up and down, as hitting those greens is tough.

The pressure might start to mount on 10 and 13 now, where I'm yet to bogey, especially now that I've put it in writing....

An improvement of three shots on the eclectic after today's round, with birdies on the par 3 3rd and 8th holes. A sand save got the par on 17, so it leaves just the fifth, which is causing me plenty of pain, without a par now.

Still bogey free on 10 and 13 too.

7 rounds in, and all holes are now par of better, after getting up and down on the fifth yesterday. Still blemish free on 10 and 13. 2 and 16 were the best chances for birdie yesterday. Just short of the century for worst ball.

Got my birdie at 11 last round so my low eclectic is the same as last year at 58.

First hole is destroying me, it is not that hard but I keep ****ing it up

Not that I can recall... certainly not on 14. Just hitting the green there is an achievement most days.

I was going to say that 5 and 17 at my course, were those where I didn't think I'd get much of a look at birdie, since I don't hit the greens, but I birdied 17 today, out of nowhere. An unusually straight drive, a flushed 5 wood, and the perfect putt from outside 6m. Kakaaaaaa!

The bogey-free streak on 10 and 13 continues, although I don't know how on 13. I cleared the water by about 10cm, but had an embedded lie still within the hazard area, and restricted footing, and no way to go direct at the flag. No problem, just get it to the edge of the green and drain the putt.

Century for worst ball is up now after a triple on 7. :(

We had an eclectic comp, possibly still do.

In A grade, everyone finishes 18-20 under* and the highest handicap in that grade wins. Not sure I see the point.

Destroyed the bogey free streaks during my shocker round a couple of weeks ago. Today, I grabbed a birdie on the second. Gotta find a way to hit the fifth green now and then though, or a birdie is never coming.

Talk us through the 5th hole.Uphill par 3 with a small green that is outside my iron range. The landscape slopes right to left a lot. Misses to the left miss a long way left if dry, and you won't have a fun chip from anywhere on the left regardless. I usually finish above the hole to the right with my sliced 5 wood, if I haven't duffed it. Then you have to pick a spot to land your chip off the green so it can run on. The green also seems faster than many others, so it is easy to putt one too far past the hole.

My long game is not good enough to hit greens from 200+ meters. I get more birdies laying up to a number, rather than trying to get on in 2.

This thread got me thinking so I started writing down my lifetime eclectic. Not that many so i think I can remember all. Its quite interesting to me what this has revealed, like how they spread out, the different clubs etc. Theres 6 holes i have never eagled but I have 5 on the 8th, all on 5 different courses, all away.

Saturday and Sunday same pin on the 9th I had 6ft and 5ft straight up the hill and missed both.

Everyone else struggling to improve their eclectic as it gets late in the year?

Last check in was after 13 rounds, and now I'm at 23. I even had a bit of a birdie drought going in the last few rounds, but not today. Two birds for the day. My fifth birdie of the year on 11, when I've had no more than two on any other hole, and my first on the 18. Lipped out a chip on 5 too.

Golf is strange. I've been playing this hole really well this year (index 2, but playing index 15 for me this year), mostly thanks to hitting drives further, and leaving 8I and 9I in regularly. Today, it played tough after lots of rain recently including plenty last night and played into the wind. So despite a good drive, I took a two hybrid to make sure I had enough to go for a safe part of the green. I hit it well to the mid-back of the green, but with the front flag I had a 15m downhill curler. Got the putt to the top of the hill and watched it slowly dribble it's way down and plop in the front. Very enjoyable!

Other peculiarities from the eclectic include not having a birdie on 10 yet, despite it playing as my easiest hole, and the current best streak of no bogeys is the 6th, with 2 under on it over the last 11 rounds, even though it was a trouble hole early on this year.

For me, yes. I've been making plenty of birdies (29 in 17 rounds since my last update), just not on the 6th. I've had a couple of decent opportunities of late, too. 2 weeks ago left one short in the heart. :roll:

I knew that as soon as I noticed this, it would get stuffed up. I sorta expected a double though, and with a shank from my 40m approach, it was a chance.

I've had -19 a couple of times before. There's still time to improve on it but the chances are slim.

Four to go. If the first hole, wasn't the first hole of the round so often, I'm sure I would have birdied it by now, but too often I stuff a shot up. I did have a good look at a putt this week though.

Good drive, smooth pitch to just outside a metre, knock in the putt. That should've happened sooner. Three left, with probably two rounds at most left, but more likely one.

Shaved the edge on 16 too, but I was a bit too aggressive with it, so it didn't turn enough.

I didn't track my eclectic as closely this year, which is a shame because I managed to finally birdie 17 the other day. No eagles (at my home course) this year though, so only -18

No improvements over the last couple of rounds for me. I got a real good look at a bird on 12, but slid it past. I watched a visiting 16 marker playing partner birdie 5 yesterday by chipping in from below the green. Bastard!


The 11th, which I have been doing very well on (2 under from last 13), is being extended at the moment, so I'll have to get my birdie (or eagle) in early this year before the new green opens. ;) Actually, someone had a HIO on it a few weeks ago. Bastard!
