View Full Version : Special: Favourite VIC Champs venue

I've had some discussions recently with a few VIC Champs regulars about favourite venue, and have subsequently decided to throw it to the people. I've devised a 'March Madness' style knockout tournament to get this done:

I listed out all of the Thursday-Sunday official courses.
Due to some duplicates I was short a few, so I threw in a couple of the better-attended Monday venues and a special 'wild-card' to round it out to 32 courses.
They were then seeded based on their 2020 Top 100 ranking (https://www.ausgolf.com.au/australias-top-100-courses-golf-australia), with the unranked courses in random order.
I have a table with all of the matches which will be posted here shortly.
I'll provide a link to a Strawpoll each day, which will end at 7pm the following night (I've allowed an extra day for the first poll). The first match will go a bit longer. The results will go up in this thread/ post, and the next link will be provided. I'll update this post with anything else I've forgotten.

Now, the important stuff... your vote should be for your 'favourite' Champs venue. It has nothing to do with the best architecture or conditioning. The Top 100 rankings already does that for us.

Which course invokes the best memories, where did you feel like you were in golfing heaven on earth, which course suited your game better, where did you have the most fun etc? That is the sort of thing you should consider in casting your vote.

To jog some dusty memories, here is a quick summary of the courses and related info:

An absolute crying shame, this one.

Waterford was a very pleasant surprise, and a course I would go back to in a heartbeat.

But the pleasantness of LF, a well-designed sensible course, making best use of land without being ****ing stupid, together with the Lovers v Haters match, it has to go to LF.

THAT is how you build a course in sand dunes. Having BD next door is like having QLD or VIC and some stupid prick putting SA or NSW over your back fence.

Versus a 2am departure from Canberra with Kev to meet a bunch of people from the internet I hadn't met before, getting there 3 hours early so cans in the car park, a busted arse front 9, then a massive comeback from 4 down to square Iain in UCW1.

It’s there to make you choose an option other than mindlessly trying to hit it as far as possible straight down the fairway. You could go short of it, over it, left of it or right of it. Strategy of the hole my ****ing arse.
Oh dear, playing from forward tees and complaining that the designer put a bunker (and surrounding slopes to feed ball into the bunker) at the distance that you would drive it from said tees. Can't really categorize that hole as a forced layup when depending on the tee, wind and your driving ability you have plenty of options. If you want a forced layup go play Half Moon Bay 13....
Just imagine the complete reverse direction this thread would have taken if Lefty had aimed straight at the bunker, flown it using his beast skills and ended up with an easy 170 into the green for his second. The par that followed would have been epic

If we played RMC there'd be no point to this whole thread.

Shouldn't be allowed to vote, didn't play RM. Skewed data. Would be a very small sample size if only people who had played a champs round at every one of these venues could vote. You just don’t want to see RMW knocked out early and open up the draw for Barny to win the title!

20 played Port Fairy.
And there are a few that would have tucked it out of their minds forever already...

Now, the important stuff... your vote should be for your 'favourite' Champs venue. It has nothing to do with the best architecture or conditioning. The Top 100 rankings already does that for us.
This is the only criteria.

BUSHY

So doesn’t matter if you didnt play it during a champs event. Good work.

AndyP
15th May 2020, 02:22 PM
Well, there's a little bit extra, but it is very subjective.

Which course invokes the best memories, where did you feel like you were in golfing heaven on earth, which course suited your game better, where did you have the most fun etc? That is the sort of thing you should consider in casting your vote.

I think that is how I survived PF until late in the round. I had a couple of beers during the round to stay drunk. If I had have taken more, perhaps I'd be the champ.

One of many. The Portland round was the outlier, and I actually did well to hang on as long as I did at Port Fairy, considering the circumstances.

Tough vote for me here....
Obviously had one of my standout rounds ever at the Creek course, which I’ve played a few times now and thoroughly enjoyed...
Moonah Legends is a very good test of golf, I had en even handicap round there on my way to winning the Aus TCC weekend.
Id happily stay and play at both venues anytime in the foreseeable future...

LeftyHoges
17th May 2020, 12:34 PM
Easy vote, Legends is just meh, had no feel about it whatsoever.

Creek is an enjoyable stroll with some underrated holes, and I personally feel it's superior to Beach.

SundayHack
17th May 2020, 12:54 PM
Creek, easy. That round ranks up there with the most enjoyable/fun rounds I have had in vic champs. The Captains back 9 was probably the best nine holes I have seen by an ozgolfer. The pterodactyls were heard around the entire 13th Beach.
