After many discussions after games that we should do a South East Weekender we now have our first one planned.

It can be either a 2 day trip or a 3 day trip depending on if you can get the Friday off work.

Dates are for May Friday 22nd, Saturday the 23rd and Sunday 24th.

We are looking to stay in or near to Millicent.
Everyone to arrange their own accommodation.
Get in early and check with TC as he has something arranged with limited spare rooms.

The Courses and Format
Day 1_Friday May 22nd

Drive to and play Lucindale. Aim for hit off say around 12-12:30. Can finalise this time closer to date.
Drive to accommodation in/near Millicent
Day 2_Saturday May 23rd

Play Millicent. If some are making it a 2 day trip we will play in the afternoon otherwise we might go for a morning time. Can also finalise this closer to date.
Day 3_Sunday May 24th

Drive to and play Robe most likely mid to late morning.
Head home after game
The List of who's going & how many Days:

As this is purposed for a Golf weekend away a little more planning is required so I'll get the ball rolling.

Much discussion has been had about doing a SAOzgolf weekend away down the South East.
Lets get the ball rolling in locking down weekend in either May or June.
With more courses than days available on weekend there's a number of ways of doing this depending on how everyone feels.

Here's a couple ideas to think about if you think we could either handle 3 rounds or only 2.
I don't think travel and playing 2 course on the same day works unless your in carts for 1 or both rounds.

3 Day Trip_Fri-Sat-Sun. 3 rounds or Golf
Day 1. Travel from Adelaide to XX on Friday afternoon to accommodation near Course 1.
Day 2. Play Course 1 on a Saturday morning then drive to another and play Course 2 in the afternoon. Preferably Course 2 has Saturday nights accommodation near by or is still close enough to first nights stay.
Day 3. Travel to Course 3 Sunday morning, play round then travel home.

3 Day Trip_Fri-Sat-Sun. 3 rounds of Golf
Day 1. Travel from Adelaide to XX Friday morning and Play Course 1. Travel to the nights accommodation after game.
Day 2. Play Course 2 either morning or afternoon depending on where accommodation is either night 1 or 2
Day 3. Play Course 3 then travel home.

3 Day Trip_Fri-Sat-Sun. 2 rounds or Golf
Day 1. Travel from Adelaide to XX on Friday afternoon to accommodation.
Day 2. Play Course 1 Saturday morning/afternoon depending on where we stay then go to Saturday nights accommodation.
Day 3. Play Course 2 on Sunday then drive home.

2 Day Trip_ Sat-Sun. 2 rounds of Golf
Day 1. Travel from Adelaide to Course 1, play round then on to accommodation.
Day 2. Play Course 2 then travel home.

From someone who's done quite a few self drive Golf Trips over the years its normally best to travel to one in the middle or furtherest from home leaving the shortest drive for the one closest to home on the last day.

Robe - Millicent - Lucindale - Bordertown

Lucindale looks to have cheap accom near the course (for those that are on a budget)

The Lucindale Hotel offers basic accommodation. Ph 08 8766 2223
Hammersmith Apartments (http://www.hammersmithcornerapartments.com/about-us.php) are central in the town Ph: 08 8766 2118 Mob: 0438 874 988
Park Drive Cottage in the town. B&B available Mob:0407 390 855
‘Holmwood’ is hosted B&B accommodation at Avenue Range 19km west of Lucindale. Mob: 0418 853 635
Andinda Cottages & Cabins (http://www.andindacottagesandcabins.com.au/)Mob: 0429 861 551
Lucindale Country Club Camping Ground offers powered and un-powered sites, hot showers and toilets. Ph 08 87667028
For me Gambie is a little too far, plus I would be too tempted to shoot through to Fairy

If we are pressed for time leave out Bordertown and save it for a future Nhill / pinball / Keith trip

I'm also happy with a 3 day trip, minus the spoon with TC (sorry mate, not my type). I am partial to a good beard though. ;)

Not sure about 2 rounds in the one day, but happy to give it a crack. Just knowing how I felt after 18 at Blackwood I dare say my game would revert to shank city on the 2nd round... hmm, thinking about that, it really won't be much different to round 1 anyway!

RE courses I'm happy to be a sheep and follow the crowd. Being such a beginner I'm just keen to play as many different types as possible.

For 3 day trip my preferred would be Lucindale, Millicent, Robe

Friday: Travel from Adelaide to Lucindale (3hrs 44m - 343km)
Play Lucindale then travel on to Millicent to stay (54min - 82km)

Saturday: Play Millicent then either stay in Millicent the second night or travel to Robe (51min -78km) and stay there Saturday night

Sunday: Play Robe then travel home (3hrs 35min - 336km)

Seeing TC's post above basing ourselves at Lucindale for the 2 nights might be a good option rather than staying in Millicent.
Lucindale to Robe is only (50min - 79km)

I reckon we play Lucindale Friday arvo

Stay overnight in Millicent - plenty of good/cheap accommodation options

Millicent GC - local comp Sat morning, Sat arvo either a 9 hole bash (back 9 is better from memory) or get hammered^ in the clubhouse with the locals (^beer, not ram ranch)

overnight again in Millicent

Robe GC

Potentially then a quickie* (*golf, no homo sexytime) round either Keith or Bordertown if time and daylight permits

Might be too much travelling around to fit Keith and Bordertown in I think.
Save that for another 3 day another day.
Keith on Friday on way up then on to Nhill. Stay there 2 nights for the Pinball :):) and play Nhill Saturday. Bordertown on way home

There might not be as many close to date as we think. The Minister has already been looking at accommodation in May / June. Having said that there may be plenty but not many to her majesties standard. I just need a bed to sleep in I don't give a crap about everything else it has or doesn't have that we never use any way .

So everyone can plan and book any accommodation in plenty of time we shall now lock it in for May 22,23,24.

Go to Singapore or Malaysia sites and they are starting flights soon going into May. Only about 6 legs to major cities as a starter. Sydney one of them.
Tourism Minister doesn't want flights, yet he wants people to book holidays to try and keep tourism afloat.
People are not going to pay out money unless assured. F@*cking Idiot.

Cheap accommodation available in Mt Gambier - cheaper than Millicent and assured of a having more facilities open (i.e. Maccas), for meals etc.

Turn out Harvey Norman now want me to start ripping down Mrs. Harvey's failed venture of Domayne on that Friday but also might try and wrangle the Friday morning to deliver stuff to the Naracoorte Hotel.
Leave it up to the peasants to play with Domayne.

Subject to (a mutual decision from) my namesake:

Friday arvo: Lucindale
Sat morning: Millicent
Sat arvo: Beachport OR vice versa if ppl coming down Saturday
Sunday: Robe OR Mount Gambier

I might be playing Bordertown Monday morning as I have a pending job in town

I think Robe will be open given the relaxation of intra-state travel and golf playing. Only restriction might be the numbers so they might insist on 2 or 3 balls.

Never played Robe so my preference is there.

Happy with the Milicent/Beachport double.

I too am trying to line up some work but in Mt Gambier for the Thurs and possibly Fri and Sat evenings so I'll probably book some accom there. If that falls through I know where to look next. :)

Happy with the Milicent/Beachport double.

new holes @ Robe look impressive + it's really the main reason why I wanted to do this trip, worst case we can play Gambie Sunday; its a bit of a hike back home though

Beachport looks like a fun 9 hole short course so we could have a comp round @ Millicent and perhaps a hit n giggle afterwards

To be honest im easy and open to anything. If I see Millicent and Robe I will be a happy golfer

Not really sure how eating will work as there still won’t be any sit down an eat indoors allowed. Outside at venue is ok if they have sit down facilities but there will be strict rules around it also. Having the family in tow might make this more complicated also.
It’s annoying as going away getting together around meals after the games is a big part of a trip. Just have to be happy we can actually get the games in the current climate I suppose.

Spoke to a very lovely 'Marg' who gave me the inns and outs of everything

- There is no time sheet, turn up and hit off when it is clear
- The course is VERY busy at the moment, Marg's suggestion is tee off no later than 9am
- Green Fee is $30, this INCLUDES the comp, hence we might as well go in it. The comp is given free to visitors so no cheaper without (Sorry Waz)
- The clubhouse will not be open until after 9 but there will be a comp registration form that you can fill out and enter your GL details etc.
- Green fees can be paid after the first 9 or when you finish

I must admit im already enjoying the laid back country vibe!

The Cleveland Cart Bag was my preferred option and is like a sponge. I don't want to be lugging the rain cover as well so the JDM Titleist Staff bag it will be. Tomorrow will now be spent in the shed working out how to make it sit on the Click Gear correctly. The Old Smoothy might end up taking it's place if not successful.

If it has to rain hopefully it's only light and not heavy coming in sideways.

What look pretty miserable on the drive up with constant misty rained turned out to be a good on course with only a couple of misty showers lasting no more than 1 hole and 1 heavy shower that again was gone after completing the hole.

Great trip so far; Lucindale really surprised me in a good way. Great land, excellent greens, a few really good bunkers.

Millicent has some very good holes; really nice backdrop and the soil is pure sand belt. The stretch from 14-17 is very ordinary but besides that lives up to the hype.

Beach port is a flat hit and giggle, fine for a wind down but nothing else.

Really looking forward to a curry (good Indian in Millicent according to Trip Advisor) and then Robe tomorrow morning.

I suggest we do this trip again in a few years

Next up we have Beachport.
Short dead flat and I mean dead flat 9 holes with same tee block both times around. Very wide fairways that tempt jumping all over the Driver. Small push up greens and strong winds off the sea add some challenge to what looks to be a simple course at first glance. The road through the course with 2 par 5’s running up either side raises the eyebrow.

Day 3 at Robe now done.
The 6 new holes are spectacular and well worth the trip.
Unfortunately we got the worst of the rain over the 3 days today. What made it worse was it was umbrella up, umbrella down rinse and repeat all day from start to finish with close to 50% of the day being wet.

What a contrast in holes from the front 6, middle 6 and last 6.
The last 6 is nothing like the front 12 and it’s like you’ve driven to another course to play a flat relatively easy course.
I’ve got a mountain of pics to put in here eventually.

Yes they are the ones in front of the Golf Club and furtherest from the coast. The last is a good finishing hole but the rest are boring.

Couple of choices here.
Try play the hole normal or go for extra length by pinging one off the road.
Result was one lefty blocking safe to center of fairway and 2 righties hitting it straight into the tree not passing the Reds. Road was successfully hit with the third shot.

This short par 4 is no easy push over. If getting one in play off the tee and a pitch to a blind pin on an elevated green is hard enough your faced with a very tricky green you’ll struggle to find a straight putt on.
I made a great dirty birdie here for the only bogey this 6 after blocking the tee shot into lost ball territory.

Tonight it’s Pizza, Ravioli Bol & Gnocchis Bol at Mad Penguin in Millicent. Authentic Italian they say.
Sorry, authentic Italian does not come from packet Gnocchi and Ravioli. Very average at best. Disappointing.
Should have gone to Ginos down the road.

Up on the Tee Block there was much debate if the bunkers were reachable on the right. We played it in a slightly down and across wind adding to the uncertainty. Like most holes on the course its a long walk to the Tee block from where our bags were left so grabbing the Range Finder quickly was out of the question. Hard_Pan and TC went first and went hard left into not so great position. I stripped one that went straight at the traps and came up well short. Only the serious bombers knocking them out 270-280m+ off the back tees where we were will be troubled.

Very hard to find a straight putt on this green and not easy to lag one close from range due to all the roller coaster ride the ball has to take. I was Pin high just off 12-14 feet away and was absolutely stoked to get the ball inside 2 foot. Wasn't feeling confident I wouldn't drop a shot from that position.

Got some Tour Jizz on the second from over on the 13th fairway (best angle to approach from) to just stay up on the top tier 4-5 foot away for the last chance to get my first Birdie of the trip on the 63rd Hole. Like the other 3 good chances from 4-8 foot in the last 12 holes it was a fail. At least this one got near the edge of the cup.
Finished the last 12 holes 2 over which included a dirty Birdie (only putt I made all day) on the 10th after blocking one lost into the goonge off the drive.

takes OOB out of play as well

While Port Fairy is a great course and one I really want to play one day I think it’s a bit of a stretch to do that trip ^.
Port Fairy is a 6 1/2 hour drive from Adelaide. That sort of distance is a hard ask to play then drive home at the end of a few days. From personal experience doing a bit of drive/play or play/drive trips between 4-5hrs is about the max before a stop and stay somewhere is best/smart.

re: Millicent

Millicent has to be one of the best country tracks ever!! Incredibly laid back.

I’ve never played there, but I’d play Millicent again before I went back to Mt Gambier if that helps.

Although Mt Gambier’s back 9 was really good.

We stopped in Millicent on our Vic Champs road trip from Adelaide to Mornington and none of us had cash.

We left a note, BennoR left about 10 voice messages, when we finally got a call back about 2 weeks later it was “Just fix it up next time you’re through” [emoji23]

Now that the week has ended (and I have somewhat caught up in my work) I can summarise the courses a bit more:

Lucindale:
Whilst I was originally sceptical this turned out to be the surprise packet of the trip. A great piece of undulating land with sandbelt soil. Whilst alot of the tee shots feature old fashioned dog leg shots (most left to right) the approaches were top quality. I was most impressed with the lack of tree interaction around the greens and the slope and speed of the various shapes on offer. The standout hole was #8. I took a photo but it was poor quality hence you do not see it above. This course punches well above its weight and is worth the trip.

Millicent:
I have previously played this course on 3 occasions being somewhat blown away by the land, soil and playability of the course. The front nine is very impressive; a wonderful journey through the forest that has been well carved out on a bed of sandbelt soil. The greens are small but clever, bunkering minimal but effective. At times you feel like some of the holes could belong at Royal Melbourne as the land and soil are very similar. Sadly after you complete 10 it slowly starts to go downhill in hole quality until a massive decline from 14-17. 18 is a good finish and tops off what is overall a great country track. With a redesign of the back nine, some removal of overgrown trees this course could feature again in the top 100. I chose not to take any pics as it was quite wet and I had already done so a number of years ago on the forum

Beachport:
This was a hit and giggle. Fine for that with good company but honestly don't ever go out of your way to play this course when in town. Mawson Lakes is an equivalent to this track

Robe:
My first time at this course. I enjoyed the front 6; reminded me a lot of Barwon Heads; similar style of hole and vibe. The new Crafter 6 is what blew me away. Great contouring and use of the natural land. Interesting and very difficult greens but boy did they roll true. The #9 at the top of the hill was spectacular. At times I had similar feelings to what I experienced at Barny. This run of 6 holes has been well thought out and cut to the natural lie of the land. My only criticism was the cut of the bunkers. Very similar to RA with flash faced edges but larger and uglier. I do wonder if there was a potential budget constraint involved here but considering the land they do look a bit unnatural. Of course the playability of them was top notch as you would expect from a brand new bunker. The final 6 were very bland and if I were the committee I would be playing the course as a 12 holer for now, sell the land to housing and cut another 6 out of the dunes with the proceeds (EPA Permitting).

Despite the inclement weather this was a great short trip. I look forward to the next time we head down the Limestone Coast. Due to the push on time I didn't get to wine taste the Coonawarra vineyards but picked up a cracking blend from a boutique mob in Padthaway.

Here is the pic of the approach shot into Lucindale #8 (a bit of acorn editing got the photo looking ok), the ideal line is over that large LHS bunker that has been somewhat merged into the natural sandy wasteland. I also love the Tussock at the top lip. This was a very difficult bunker to get out of. From this entry line the green then feeds right towards the flag. Any ball entering this green centre will kick right. The tee shot features a very wide scope of fairway that feeds right to left. You can basically hit any shape you like to hit your desired part of the fairway

This is a real gem of a hole and I would put it up there in terms of a list of best country holes in the state.
