Hi all,
David from Adelaide... joined yesterday.

Fairly new to golf, but definitely have the bug. Still trying to find a club close by that isn't too expensive, but is also good quality. Once I've done that I can start working on a handicap, but would no doubt be a 100+ (emphasis on the +) golfer. It's mainly been the range for me to date.

The feeling on getting that tiny ball to land within a few metres of a target 100+ metres away... that's what does it for me.

Anyway, glad to be here and look forward to getting involved and learning from the ozgolf crew.

Hey DMG. Welcome. We've got a good community going in SA, so I'm sure they can provide plenty of advice, and give you opportunities to have a hit with them. They have a round coming up on the 12th, I believe.

I’d take within a few metres from 30.

G’day Dave

Hi David,

Welcome, always pleased to have another SA'er on board.

With regards to looking for a course to join - where are you located and how far would you be prepared to travel for your regular game?

Don't give in to Peppas' pleading (unless you like appearing on Border Security). :)

Welcome aboard.

Thanks Marcel. I'm in Welland and would be looking within a 30 minute drive if possible, in order to help keep it regular. I was looking at North Adelaide because it's 5 minutes away and seems reasonably priced, but after reading some of the SA course threads I'm not sure that's the go. Perhaps I just need to visit some and see which one is for me. I have some really great choices close by... if money was no object!

I'd give Westward Ho a try. Only a little further and a more interesting / challenging layout.

I've no idea what membership options and costs are but will definitely be towards the more affordable end of the scale. There is also a shorter 'executive' course there which would also give variety

Welcome DMG,

In terms of course recommendations I agree with Marcel on Westward Ho. Pete Ormsby did a wonderful job in getting both the pro shop and the course in top shape. I heard he used to get up early and hound the greenskeeper staff to cut the greens and fairways to a good standard.

Being that you have just started in the game I would also consider Regency. In the last 5 years it has been renovated and has some interesting new holes worth checking out.

We also have some ozgolf friends located at North Haven so if you're looking for some good company perhaps setup a round there with Hatchy and HP

Next time we have a social hit come and join us. Im feeling the skins game might not be a good starting point as it is not handicapped with a $20 stake

tc,

I can't believe you didn't ask him if he's left handed and wanted to buy a putter (or 6)

appearing soon on eBay Marcel, keeping most of them mind you

Thanks tc,
Where do I keep an eye on the organisation of social hits? I honestly wouldn't even mind coming out for a walk to watch. I'm keen to get to know as much as possible about navigating the courses, etc.

Looks like I better check out Westward Ho! Appreciate the recommendations. :D

I'm a North Adelaide member - it's a good club with welcoming members (I joined ~10 months ago, mainly for the convenient location). The South Course is far and away the one to play, but don't discount the North Course and Par 3 (if you're a member) for practice. I'd suggest playing at a few different courses around the place before deciding where yout want to join.

Solid advice thanks BYU! Gives me an excuse to get in extra rounds too. ;)

Hi DMG, Welcome to the forum. Our Ozgolf social rounds are organised in the 1st Tee thread so keep an eye on that if you want to know when and where we're playing next.

Huge shout out to HP for a great afternoon of golf yesterday at North Haven. Extremely helpful playing with a member who knows the course when it's your first outing!

Looking forward to many more!

Hi DMG and welcome!

I agree with BYU in terms of playing as many courses as you can before committing to one place. Also scope out what practice facilities each course has as this can be where you will improve your game most. Don't get caught up in playing holes every time you go out if you want to improve. An hour putting and chipping around a practice green will do much more for your scores than playing back to back rounds.

I was a member at Westward Ho for many years and really enjoyed it prior to moving south.

Haven't committed to green fees membership at this stage, for the very reason you state. :)

Totally agree with your advice on practice. Even after the round yesterday I can see I need a lot of work on my chipping (and really any stroke that doesn't require a full swing). I came away with a couple of very clear areas for improvement, so will be working on those to begin with. Will be one step a time for me for a while.

Hi DMG,

Welcome aboard. Hope to see you out on the course soon. We are just organising the Febuary catch up at Blackwood.
have a look in the 1st Tee thread.

I'm not personally a member anywhere at the moment. Just enjoy our social catch-ups.

Thanks wazamac, I'll definitely keep an eye on the 1st Tee thread as I'm keen to get involved once I've built up a bit more confidence. :)

Welcome to the forum DMG.
Jump in the deep end and join us for the Blackwood round in Feb.
Don’t be concerned about your perceived abilities thinking you need to wait to join us for a hit.

Hello and welcome DMG.

As you have seen we try and organise an SA Ozgolf hit each month, nothing serious, more of a social walk/chat really whilst hitting a golf ball all over the place.

I am not the most regular attendee but will see you out there sometime.

Great nadg63, and thanks for the welcome! Look forward to hitting it all over the place with you some time. ;)
