Going by the above Nov 30th and Dec 1st would appear to be the dates to go for. I already have Marcel looking in to RAGC availability BUT the option is to keep everything southern and play Lady Bay and Mount Compass, this way people could stay down that way for the weekend if they so wish keeping travel to a minimum.

I have just checked out the Mount Compass calendar and it would seem that Saturday 30th would be a non starter there as they have a '4Club Xmas Ambrose' event taking place - but the Sunday is clear!

marcel
15th June 2019, 03:47 PM
I think TC has a spreadsheet tablet handicap app that converts 4 person Ambrose into individual Stableford or stroke

On your list Highercombe came before Mt Osmond. Unless you want to herd some goats Highercombe is likely not to feature as an ozgolf champs venue.

In terms of MO: Whilst not a great course I probably like it more than most on here. It has a good set of Par 3's, some interesting short 4's and a fantastic clubhouse. It's tight and quirky and demands a lot of different shots than your normal golf course.

On the donwnside the Par 5's are not so good and the kike is horrible particularly around the greens. It's almost unplayable this time of year, like one big slush puppie.

Despite playing really bad with severe laryngitis and a swollen leg I thought it made for a reasonable champs Sat round.

Getting back to champs; sounds like its either Lady Boy / Compass OR Compass / RA with TTG as a potential backup

Close. Single stab.

As per 3PP's post, in previous years it has been played as two rounds of Stableford, adding the scores to get the result - and I reckon that is the format we will stick with, (Stroke is too painful!)

BobsYourUncle
19th June 2019, 03:13 PM
Fair enough, I can see why stroke would be a bad choice on potentially unfamiliar courses with lots of hazards/penalty areas.

Marcel has today confirmed that RAGC is all good for the Sunday round, meaning Mount Compass GC for the Saturday venue.

Have updated the OP including green fee cost BUT that is not 100% certain yet - looking at somewhere around $200 to cover both days!?

Now back to the Saturday round at Mt C:- now that the restaurant is up and running again would everyone be keen to have dinner there afterwards!? (saves all rushing off somewhere else)

First initial thoughts are yes that would be cutting it too late.
By the time you get out of the Airport and on the road to the Mount Compass. Defiantly no time to check into your accommodation first.
Daylight hours for Golf is not so much a problem. Finishing time for refreshments and dinner in an open club house could be. Not sure what time they are open to on a Saturday.

Not sure what time they are open to on a Saturday.

Compass is open for dinner on Saturday nights, hence we should be covered with a late finish. See blurb below from website:

Mount Compass Golf Course is pleased to welcome The Range, who have taken over the restaurant and bar. They are open 7 days a week from 11am - 5pm, with the kitchen opening for lunch from 11am-3pm. They are also open Friday and Saturday nights for dinner.

We would be delighted to host your function and group golfing events - please contact us on 08 8556 8022 or via email to dine@mcgc.com.au or play@mcgc.com.au to discuss your requirements.

I played at Mt Compass today, and had lunch in the restaurant afterwards - nearly 20 there today (Monday) for lunch.
Apparently, over half of the restaurant clientele are locals, the rest golfers.
The people (contractors) running the restaurant have been there for a year now - previously at Links Lady Bay (I wonder why they left? Seems obvious now given the hotel bankruptcy. They left before the hotel owners went through the hoop).

Lunch was excellent - I presume TC has booked for the golf dinner.

Course was excellent as well. Lots of kangaroos (big reds, mums, joeys). It really is as good as TC says. Greens play well, but are thatchy. But they play well. If you haven't been since ownership changed in 2016, you will be surprised.

Should be a great 36 holes (54 for those going to Links Lady Bay on the pre-game day).

Appreciate the kind words Benje! Our super organised Nadg has booked dinner. Great to hear that MC won't have any coring done over the period so it will make for a very tough weekend particularly if the wind gets up

What I love most about MC is the green contours and how they differ at multiple entry points. IMO it is a marginally better golf course than Lady Bay. I must admit over a few more games this year I have grown to have less hate for #10, in saying that though I still think it needs a change along with #11 for the course to reach its maximum potential

I heard a rumor of a possible planned bunker renovation in the near future? Not sure if it is genuine information as was mentioned on the grapevine during a round (with a person I didn't know previously)

Benje
24th September 2019, 07:55 PM
They have renovated the bunkers already TC.
Some of the bunkers integrate into the rough/bracken as well as Royal Melbourne and Cypress Point.
I dislike the high entry lips on the bunkers, but that is a minor matter.
MC is about to acquire a bunker ripper of some form - personally I thought the bunkers were excellent and would be low on the 'spend' list.

#10 worked better for me on Monday - layed up to about 100 metres. Can't attack the pin on the third shot, but you live to play again.
Hit a 3-wood afterwards, which landed high and right, and rolled back 40 metres to near my lay-up.
If you can carry your second to land within 60 metres of the green or closer, go for it, otherwise lay-up.
Some of the gulch has been removed - the left side near #8 tee. Also a bit wider on 7, and a few other strategic removals.

I had more success on #11 as well - played a long second to the left and allowed the ground to work.

Greens have plenty of slope, so are quick downhill, slow uphill and break viciously side hill. They have them at a fair pace though.

They did a light scarify and solid tyne recently. I don't think any other greens work is planned.

'More kangaroos than Karrinyup'.

Benje: If you layup just short of the green on #10 there is a secret way to get the ball very close to the cup. Not really a hard one to figure out but if you texas wedge the ball all the way up to the back bunker lip it funnels down nicely to the hole

A good example of using the green contours at MC

10 at MC is the only hole there I haven't worked out the best way to play for myself.
I've had more than enough rounds there but have no clear idea of where I'd prefer to play the 2nd and 3rd shot from which ultimately results in butchering the hole completely through lack of commitment.
A lot of it stems from not knowing what to take off the tee in what conditions as that can vary a fair bit from the elevated position.

Hatchy: Going right just short of the forest gives you a view but that's about it.

Much easier to layup short of the LHS corner bunker and then pop a 5 iron over the trees just short of the green. I use a 4 hybrid that gives me a bit more height. From there its a putter right up to the top the front lip of the back bunker, then you have yourself a makeable birdie putt

Drive up the middle with a 3-wood, (driver can find trouble either side), second shot draw it around the corner, third aim it out to the far right of the green as it funnels back down and across to the hole - that's my theory on #10, has worked occasionally!

Sounds similar to the last time we played it! I hit a perfect drive short of the bunkers, but then thinned it into the bushes, had to hack it out sideways, 2 shots later I got to play my texas wedge shot, put it to one metre for the double bogey!

Benje
18th October 2019, 06:37 PM
about every 30 minutes, and you don't play when the train is about.

It is a single set of tracks - two stops to the end of the line.
Train goes to the beach, and 10 minutes later it is coming back the other way.

In the clubhouse you can see pictures from when there was a 'golflinks' train stop, with old steam trains.
The platform/stop has gone, and the trains are now diesel.
They were going to be electrified in the 1920's, leading to the club getting MacKenzie to come and re-route the course to get rid of crossing holes.
Course got fixed, and 10 years later the government shelved the electrification and went diesel!

By the way, the line is an integral part of the course. Ozgolfers in previous championships have had to play from the train tracks - it is a near impossible shot but a lot of fun.

Year 3 at Balckwood was the massive wash out with a Hybrid format having to be invented after half the participants pulled out either before the game or during the game.
Year 4 there was no champs

The best and really only way to lock in a permanent Format is everyone plays individual Stableford and the teams scores are averaged. This will cater for odd numbers and not having exactly even numbers from each side in groups is not necessary.
Numbers in teams to be balanced with a random draw from the larger pool to balance the other side where there is a big difference.
I will start a separate thread for all Kitchener Cup Discussion.

Kitchener Cup has been played 3 yrs now with every year being a different format.

Numbers in teams to be kept even with a random draw from the larger pool to balance the other side.

If even teams aren't needed I'd prefer to play on the SA side.

Nothing like match play to get your heart rate up. Being 6 down at the turn and coming back to square the match at this years Vic champs will always be one of my best golfing moments... (sorry JoeS) 😉

Averaging total team score sounds so ... average.

For everyone that hasn't Played Mt Compass before make sure you have a few spare balls as there are plenty of Yum Yums that eat golf balls not to far wide of the 2nd cut on some holes.
It's not uncommon to look for 1 and come out with 4-5 others but not find your own.

I finished with my starting ball last time - the rough has been cut a lot wider.
The lake on #6 is still there though.....

Even #10 has had some scrub removal on the left! (I said 'some', not a wholesale clearance).

What's the rough at Royal Adelaide like at te moment? I've heard that's a good place to lose balls too.

It plays better now.

Also Love the tree removal on #17 past the lhs bunkers. IMO one of the most underrated courses in the country

Uncle Bob

the rough is getting less severe at RAGC. However, there are parts which are just as thick - typically where irrigation spray is getting to the rough.
Left of 5 green is perhaps the worst, whereas dry areas the rough is laying down now.

Large pines on the left of 4 have just been removed - the view of 7green from 2 green (and 2 green from 7 green) is very good. Plusless ball looking on the 4th tee shot than there was. Still having the final tidy up there.

Can I (pretty please with sugar on top) drop the jacket off to somebody South on Friday? Don't really want to lug it all the way to Victor and back with 4 ppl in the car + luggage etc.

Edit: West is also an alternative as I have to go to Grange GC on Friday
