Don’t really mind which tees, I’ll just make sure I bring enough balls this time so I don’t have to buy some in the pro shop after 9 holes like I did at Pac Harbour. 😉BTW, did you get my PM?

For xmas I got a dozen of the Wilson 500 balls (Big W special from the brother). Perfect opportunity to give em a run around Barny!

Howdy Oz Golfers. I just thought I'd send a quick note and thank you. Appreciate the invitation to play at RH last Friday, even if I did get stiffed. You know when you play to your handicap for the first time in 6 months, score 37 points, come 3rd in the event and still never look like winning your match play - that something dodgy is going on!! I reckon Pete the pilot organised that.

A few other things of note:
- to the Queenslanders - no you cannot take our greens back with you. It serves you right for living in a climate that cannot take cool climate grasses :-)
- Jono - I think you need to work on your smash factor mate and dont be frightened to get both feet off the ground when hitting driver
- On behalf of the club, thanks for choosing us to host the most significant even on the OZ golf calendar. Hopefully you all enjoyed the game and appreciated that we are part way through a process of improving our course. You have seen the results of the first stage which is significant widening of the playing corridors. When we started 5 years ago our fairways were 18m wide and the playing corridors were down to 30m in many places thanks to ill advised tree plantings form the 80's / 90's. We have taken out 300 blackwoods and over 350 radiata pines in the past 3 years.
- Our next step is to implement the MP from Richard Chamberlain. Richard was selected because his plan was to work with the existing routing and vibe of the course whilst significantly improving the strategy. I'd like to say he's also a good bloke but you guys know better.

I look forward to hosting you guys again in 5-6 years time when we have hopefully completed the works.

Any feedback on your experiences at the club are greatly appreciated and will be passed on to the GM (pro shop, staff, course, conditioning, food and beverage etc).

Finally it looks like you had a couple of nice days at Barnbougle - that place is magic and I suspect most of you will return there at the very least.

cheers,

As I board the next flight on my journey home I wanted to say another massive thank you to everyone that came this year.

To Lefty and all his helpers that pulled this event together, you’re all superstars and I am certainly thankful for everything you do.

I think we can all agree that the decision to venture down to Tassie for a year was a raging success. The quality of the weather for the entire trip, the outstanding quality of the courses we played and the exceptional group dynamics were second to none.

Congratulations to all of the daily winners and of course the one and only Rob Burgundy who came home with a wet sail to pip Grumpy at the post (and in the process sort my deposit for the 2020 Vic Champs- cheers Ron[emoji482]).

Massive thanks to all my drinking buddies. We had another wonderful showing from a large assortment of characters and it definitely made the trip as memorable as possible.

Thanks to Courty for driving me and Lefty around most of the week. It’s always very much appreciated.

Thanks to everyone one I played with and apologies for some of the substandard play.

If you’ve never been to a Vic Champs I highly recommend you put it on your list. By all reports 2020 will be a doozy so lock it in Eddie and just come. You won’t regret it!!

Until next time thanks everyone.

Thanks to lefty for organizing the event. This was my first Vic champs and I thoroughly enjoyed the golf in good company.

Big thanks to all my playing partners who put up with my regular 3-4 putting and the occasional expletive. Arm lock putting ain’t for me.

Shout out to Brummer, PTP and all the lovely crew at Royal Hobart. I felt very welcomed as a guest and really enjoyed the course. I reckon it’s gonna be an unsung gem once Richard has finished his MP.

Thanks Lefty for organising another fantastic champs. This really is the best week on my golfing calendar. Thanks also to any and all of his helpers. With the hard work from you guys it allows us to rock up and play golf, so thanks once again.

Congrats to the champ Ron. Another to join the Naga2Champ club. Maybe we can get jackets made for next year. Also thanks for filling my pocket with calcutta cash.

Thanks to Dave for driving the clown car and putting up with all us drunks.

Thanks to all my playing partners for dealing with my very average golf.

Thanks to all the guys and Shaz for sharing a few beers and laughs over the week. (Except WB you’re a shit bloke and 3pp you are still a muppet.) This is what this week is all about for me. Golf just brings us together.

How good was kicking the Souths arse once again in the uncivil war with their team stacked with local guns. It was delicious. Seriously though thanks to PTP for getting some top blokes to fill to void this year so this great tradition could continue.

Can’t wait to see everyone again next year

A big Thank-you to Lefty and his assistants for another awesome job organizing the Vic / Southern Champs. I've thoroughly enjoyed every Vic Champs I have attended and this year was certainly no exception. Well done to RonBurgunday on being 2019 Champion, another Naga to Champ story - congratulations on the deserved win.

To all my playing partners over the 4 days, Peter_rs, Grandmasterb, Bushy, Jonno, Rightyhoges (aka Tractorboy), Petethepilot, Captain Nemo, Grumpy, Ferrins, Thecollective, Jonno and Courty, thanks guys it was great to play with you all and in some instances meet you for the first time.

To Petethepilot, it was great to play against you in the Uncivil War, your advice and guidance around Royal Hobart was truly generous and appreciated. It was great to finally meet you and I can't wait to get back to Tassie and play Royal Hobart once the changes have been made. A fantastic course will be made even greater. Congratulations to Peter_rs on being another successful Union Captain.

To my clown car buddies, 3PP, SundayHack, WBennet RightyHoges and Ferrins (before he jumped cars to JoeS), it was an honour to be your driver. As I've probably already mentioned I can't remember when I laughed as hard or as long as I did over those 4 days.

Thanks Grumpy for the lift back to the airport - much appreciated mate.

For me, it is also the little things that make a Champs weekend so memorable. Things like having the best toasties I've ever tasted at a small joint before Launceston. The owner of said joint making fun of WBennet's attire and of us in general. The local shenanigans at the Bridport pub on Saturday night and being served by a barmaid who was drunker than the rest of us. Memories that will last a lifetime and some which will become part of Champs folklore.

Forgive me if I have forgotten anyone. Bring on 2020!

The Thursday game includes the crap ball challenge and our team got a win mostly due to Courty being Ron Barassi. The course presented nicely and provided a good challenge. Absolutely awesome shot by Dcanto into the very tricky heavily guarded par 3. Pretty sure anyone who held the ntp on that hole had a bit of a chubby. I ...,certainly did! Count me in for this one!

My girlfriend wanted to go for a weekend away last month and I convinced her to go to Warrnambool so I could sneak in a round at Port Fairy. The only problem was that my back was stuffed the entire time and had to cancel the round.

I died a little just driving past the course having heard plenty of good things.

I realise we've already moved into planning for the 2020 Vic Champs (which, let's face it, is awesome), but now that the fog is starting to lift from my brain and work is almost of back under control I wanted to get a little recap of the weekend out there. Firstly and most obviously, massive thanks to Lefty and his usual band of helpers, SundayHack for the trophies and Courty for the spreadsheets (and no doubt more unsung heroes out there). It must be a massive amount of work to arrange this and it's a privilege for the rest of us to be able to just turn up and enjoy it. Thanks to all of my playing partners over the 3 days, the many drinking partners an even my car and roommate Johnno (aka 2020 Champ).

UnCivil War (Royal Hobart): Thanks to PTP for coming to the rescue just as the Confederates were about to unfurl the white flag and providing a great group of blokes to reinforce the southerners and allow the event to continue. It was great to get my first win in the UnCivil War, thanks in no small part to my generous opponent Collis letting me in on some local knowledge on the greens. By the way Benno they break only half as much as they appear to (oh that's right, you know that already but didn't find out until after the round). The People's Royal (TM) was thoroughly enjoyable and will no doubt be even better when the redevelopment is finished. Somehow I picked a good day land my first ever comp win, also scoring an individual win and the team win with Bushy. Thanks to the Confederate leadership brains trust for picking me in the mystery fireball too. There's another point for the good guys and another loss for Benno. 3 victories in a row is great but we all know Queenslanders are good for 8 in a row so lets keep the domination going!

Champs Round 1 (Lost Farm): Lost Farm is the most spectacularly beautiful course I've ever seen. Thinking about that opening stretch of holes still gives me movement. I'm not surprised they couldn't cut two of them and am glad we played all 20. You know it's an amazing experience when I could play it after driving for 4 hours with a massive hangover and I still couldn't wipe the smile off my face. Also, for a bloke whose home track only has 15 holes, somehow Toddy got better as the round went on which was impressive.

Champs Round 2 (Dunes): The Dunes may be harder than Lost Farm and arguably not as pretty, but it's my pick of the two and the best course I've ever played. Subjective I know. It looks like it has been there forever and was always meant to be there. The flow from tee to fairway to green is just perfect and the options you have at your disposal are endless. I'm sure I hit some rubbish shots there as always, but I've already forgotten them. I also hit some of my best ever shots and those are the ones that will stick with me. As will Ferrins hitting out of that insane bunker on 4 to a couple of feet. Commiserations to Grumpy for the bizarre way we ended up in a playoff. It's the last time I rely on Bushy's maths!

Dunes round 2: If playing a course like Barnbougle Dunes for $119 is some of the best value in the world, then playing it again for only an extra $31 is inarguably the best value anywhere. As much as I enjoyed the rest of the weekend, this second round is what will stick with me as the most enjoyable round of golf I've ever played. In that late afternoon light, with the company I had, on that course pretty much to ourselves, carrying a couple of persimmons and a half set, playing from different tees and making things up as we go... that's as good as it gets. Special mention to our newly created 125m par 3 from 14th tee to 15th green and blasting balls across to Lost Farm from 16th tee (I'm sure Jono made it over) before Ferrins missing a hole in 1 by millimetres and he and I both getting another kaakaa. Just sensational.

That was the best weekend of golf I've ever had. RH was great and Barny was transcendent. But even better than the golf was the company and it's for that reason that I'll keep coming back. This was my second Vic Champs and I've now managed to finish both last and first. But the result is inconsequential and I had my favourite weekend of the year on both occasions. Golf might be the thing that we have in common and gets us to the event in the first place but it pales into insignificance compared to the banter, good times and general piss taking off the course. Shoutout to the Bridport Inn for one of the unexpectedly better nights I've had at a pub too. If you've never been, you need to get there. If you think your game isn't up to standard to attend you're wrong (and have clearly never seen me or most of the others play). If you've been before then then you know so get your arse back there next year.

So again, thanks Lefty for organising it, thanks to everyone who attended for allowing me the best weekend of the year. See you all in South-West Vic in a years time.

LeftyHoges
4th March 2019, 05:36 PM
Final totals are in, a little down on previous years due to the fact we had no Saturday night auction, and a smaller field than all champs bar the first. But for 19 pissheads and Courty (although we're getting to him slowly), this years VIC champs total is still a pretty god damn amazing effort of $2500. Well done, thanks and congrats to all on your outstanding generosity once again, its for great causes and I can't thank you enough.

For future reference because I promise myself I'll do this every year and always forget, our rough running total of money raised at VIC Champs over the last 6 years (because we were selfish pricks and did 0 at Champs I), is a staggering $17,925!!!! I very much look forward to busting through the $20k barrier at VIC Champs 2020 in the South-West!

Much love, Lefty.

Friday review,
Started with a very enjoyable social round with Joe at Pittwater GC which is a very pretty 9 hole track adjacent to a bird sanctuary. Played a ball offf both tees for a combined score matchplay. On the 5th hole we met a good old boy doing some maintaince on the greenside trap. We chatted about the course and golf things but all he spoke to Joe about was killing all the rabbits. Guess he has that look in his eye😀 Joe then over the next few days enlightened me on the many ways to catch.shoot and prepare this furry vermin.

I've finally managed to squirrel away a few minutes here at work (ssshhh, don't tell anyone) to come up with my thank yous and summations for yet another epic Victorian Champs...

First and foremost I have to say a hearty congratulations to Ron Burgundy, so very well done to take that victory home under immense pressure. I don't know if I can ever recall 1 ball being hit so far, then having the next shot move so little. The 280m drive followed by the 30m pitch from 130m out was an interesting tactic, but I guess it paid off! [emoji38] That 2-putt from the back-right corner will haunt / make me sick / excite / give me wood for the remainder of my days, I don't believe I've EVER seen a shot that good under that amount of pressure. Even the 18-incher you left had me nervous as all shit, but there's nothing new there really anyway. To go from Gnomey to Champy was amazing, and to have it happen a second time is surreal. Well done sir, and you may flog this title to absolute death, it was thoroughly earned and deserved.

Commiserations to Grumpy, who figuratively had 2 hands on that beautiful massive piece of wood, only for it to be ripped away last minute. Congratulations on a stunning round on Saturday, you can be very proud of your weekend efforts. Thank you both for taking the spirit of the playoff in stride too, I've never been a fan of the Countback for deciding a major title, so to have our first decided between two gentlemen was really nice.

Speaking of massive wood, SundayHack, we can't thank you enough for the production of those beautiful trophies, especially relatively last minute when it became apparent Monsta would not be able to get them done for us. The craftsmanship was outstanding. And for once again fleecing us all out of our dough with the promise that if we somehow make a birdie we may be rewarded for it monetarily.

Next, to the man I can't do this without, or at least it wouldn't be done in half the time, Courty, thank you as always for massive contributions. Without your help I'd be doing admin work for this champs for 2 months prior, all the way during, and probably for 2 weeks after. Your help allows me to actually have some fun at these champs instead of getting bogged down in all the intricacies, so I can't thank you enough. Also, for chasing up the Taswegians so that we could have a fair, uncompromised fight in the Uncivil War, greatly appreciated.

To our stand-in auctioneer (I don't think he minds either, any chance to rip shit through us spuds) wbennett, you've done some outstanding work yet again, and it was great to see you let your hair down on Saturday night instead of being tucked up in bed. ;-) Even if it did COMPLETELY ruin you for the next 2 days.

The two gents above were also the organisers of our Uncivil War uniforms this year, so cheers to you guys for this, and of course as always, our special thanks go to Marto for the supply and tailoring. It's a great tradition of our Champs to have these and we truly appreciate that even though he's not there with us to bleat, a part of him is always with us.

3PuttPete & peter_rs, our two benevolent Uncivil War Captains. Thank you so much for the spirit of the competition, your conduct in battle, and for the organisation of your troops. It is still by far my favourite day in the OZgolf calendar, and I know that is true for so many others. Congratulations to Peter_rs and The Union for another victory, and for the first time taking the lead in the head-to-head battle. We look forward to renewing rivalries again next year.

PeteThePilot, I can't thank you enough for organising JBower, JJ Landman, Brum and yourself to take part in our festivities. I thoroughly hope you enjoyed the format of the day, the spirit of the competition and your playing partners company, and please pass on again our thanks for joining us. We hope you can all seriously consider joining us for the 2020 instalment (except JBower, he's too good).

Kingston Beach, Royal Hobart and Launceston GCs - I've been in contact with all these clubs to thank them for the way they presented everything to us and they wish to pass on their thanks for our conduct and patronage of their courses. Josh @ RHGC has expressly welcomed any of our group back to RHGC should any of us ever be down that way, so (and I can't believe I'm saying this) we may look to do this trip again in 6-7 years time once Dicky has completed his works at RHGC, and I've recovered from the scars both physical and mental of Barny Dunes. A special thanks to our member SMS316 for hosting us at his place of work on Thursday, thank you so much for having us, and despite what you say I enjoyed Kingston Beach, a very solid track, but just with one pond that can **** right off.

Bit of a personal one here, but thank you to Bushy for your contacts on getting the 3 of us onto Kingston Heath with the wonderful Lou, and Ratho Farm pre-champs. Ratho Farm holes 1-14 with the hickories is some of the best fun I've ever had on a course. Shame it all went downhill so quickly from there! [emoji38]

Everyone - You all deserve my biggest thanks. For attending (especially with our first overseas jaunt), taking everything in great spirit, your generosity when it comes to Calcuttas and "Voluntary contributions", and most importantly the laughs that you all provide. It's almost a shame that golf gets in the way of the socialising on trips like this, and the 4 hours sinking piss post-round on the balcony at Barny Dunes was better than the 4 hours that preceded it. I know that this weekend in particular was not cheap, so for everyone to do what they have done over their 2, 3, 4 or 5 days is an outstanding effort.

Debutants - Thank you and well done to these guys, we had 4 weekend debutants this year, grandmasterb for the first time on Thursday, and of course the 3 RHGC ring-ins on Friday. It takes a fair amount of courage to throw money to some stranger on the internet with the prospect of playing golf with 20+ strangers you've never met before, so for taking the plunge we say thank you and we sincerely hope to see you back next year. I must also give a special shout-out for all of you, but especially those that took my brother RightyHoges under their wings and showed him the OZgolf way. I hope you all got along OK, but that I'm still your favourite Hoges.

Regulars - You guys and lady know how I feel. We've had quite a few make all 7 installments of the VIC Champs and a very large number have done 5 or 6, so for continuing to support this event I thank you. Imagine if we could actually get some bloody Victorians to play!!!!

Mrs Lefty - She cops an enormous load from me (phrasing!) in the lead-up to this, when I forget everything with 3 days to go. She did the prize envelopes and the NTP baggies, as well as a multitude of other little things, so thanks hun! But don't worry everyone, I showed her the groups appreciation Monday night!

Well done to Ferrins on taking out the prestigious Gross prize. A true champion. ;-)

To anyone else who has done things that I've forgotten, I can guarantee you that I appreciated them greatly at the time, and I apologise that I haven't thanked you publicly here.

I look forward to seeing you all at the 2020 instalment (https://www.ozgolf.net/showthread.php/55165-2020-VIC-Champs-Come-to-ME-Mountain-SW-VIC), and if you haven't got your name down yet, what the bloody hell are you waiting for?!?!
