17th July 2006, 02:46 PM
I think I will go and see what the fuss is all about. I'll be inviting my brother along as well.

Anyone available to join me? Would be planning for a morning tee time, but not too early considering there is a drive involved.

August 14 is the Monday before the Ekka Holiday, so if you take the Tuesday off you can have an extra long weekend like me. Yay!

Cost: $50

Do they take IOUs?

And here I was thinking that it would be just my brother and I.
I assume that the cost is still $50 for the weekdays, but I'll confirm closer to the date when I make a booking.

jarro, that's what I heard the NSW guys do at their days.

AndyP
17th July 2006, 03:59 PM
g69, I've had this discussion with stoney before and I share your line of thinking. I'd rather enjoy the course, rather than slogging it out. Plus I'll have my social hacker brother with me. And isn't that why the tees are there?

Choppa
17th July 2006, 04:22 PM
Now, which tees should we go off......

Take this for what it's worth, but I played from the second back markers and didn't enjoy it too much. I am dying to get back to have a go from the tips. I think I would enjoy it much more.
I think the reason was that I was driving really well, and found that it was too easy to fly the traps.

And before you all start, I never said I didn't like the course ok. I thought it was fantastic.

AndyP
17th July 2006, 06:21 PM
From the back markers, my good drives might not even get to the traps.

AndyP
26th July 2006, 03:25 PM
From what I can tell, there are 6 people interested to date, but quite a few in pencil.
Any others? I might give them a ring and make a booking in the next couple of days.

AndyP

Doesn't matter what tees I hit off, the trophy is still in the cupboard and my names not getting erased off the board.

just, if you are still handing cards in to get your handicap, you might want to get one of us to mark and sign your card so you can take it back to Nudgee. You usually only need a minimum three cards from your home club, and the other two can be from anywhere.

Wonder how the boys are going at Pacific Harbour??? Nice day for it, wish I was there....

Anyone bold enough to make score predictions? Here are my guesses...

AndyP - 85. Despite playing from the "appropriate tees", I don't think his Beerwah form will translate into any birdies here. Still, 85 is a good result for first time around.
jaster - 79. Could do anything. He's been in bed for 2 years, so form is unknown. I'm tipping a few birdies from those tees, with his length. Sharing a cart with Alo will be a massive distraction for him, but it should do wonder's for Alo's cart etiquette and pace of play generally!
andylo - 92. If he listens to anything Jaster tells him, he'll avoid disaster and will win the day, nett.
just - no idea. don't know him.

leighthebee - no idea. don't know him.
davemason - 90. Should be used to wide open, breezy layouts, but I suspect will struggle with the many hazards.
CobraSS - 78. He's solid and will stay out of the hazards. Gross winner for the day.

BrisWesty
14th August 2006, 11:48 AM
Ran around 18 holes at Caboolture and then wandered the first five holes with Jaster, AndyLo, AndyP and Just. Good to meet Jaster and Just but I think it's going to be a loooong day at the office.
A few thoughts on the course.
Penal rough.
Very sharp edges on the cups. Anything that hits the edge of the hole keeps going.
Subtle and not so subtle breaks on the green.
It's quite disconcerting to hear the ball impact when it lands on the green, almost like a dead concrete sound.
It's going to be a pretty full on day at the champs. Some BIG scores.
Dicky, kudos to you all. Great effort in constructing the course.

Jarro
14th August 2006, 01:32 PM

well I had 93 off the blacks was 1 over after 4 then all down hill after that, the best analogy that I can think of is a "Broncos (Ponies) end of season slump"

jaster
14th August 2006, 05:48 PM
Choppa got it perfect!!! Thanks for the vote of confidence BV but 80 was no chance today...especially as we played off the blacks!! I really struggled all day with my stomach but pepped up on painkillers so it's no excuse, I had a fantastic day..first 18 holes since last years Ozgolf champs so I am stoked. Bloody tired now though after a 2 1/2 drive back home and being up since 5:30am.

Great to meet some of the new guys and also catch up with the other guys again.

I only shared the cart with Alo for 16 holes...he had to go...I'll let someone else share the reasons ;)

AP can do the full tally as I wasn't sure what everyone shot but I had a smooth...89 :p 43 on the front and 46 on the back. Wind picked up for the back 9 and made it a little tougher. Full 3 wood into 17 and it was still 10m short. My putting saved my butt big time, greens were rolling a treat and if you got the right line you were laughing. I only laked 1 ball which was a surprise...damn I can barely hit it out of my shadow now...Alo was 30m past me and AP 50m..but he was 30m in front off the Gold tees hahahahah :D

AP hit Alos Hibore amazingly well but is in denial, man he hit it pure!

Course is looking great but expect to shoot hundreds if you are not hitting it 250m in the middle and not a short game wizard. ;)

I had a new set of irons in play today as well :p

Thanks for the day, guys. It was a fun round. Great to see jaster out there too.

I don't think I really took in that much of the course, but some of those par 3s definitely stand out.

Things from the day that come to mind for me:

A-Lo's tee-shot that skimmed a dozen times across the full length of the water and into the wall on the par 3 7th.
My dramatic long curling putt for birdie on the same hole
Jaster's great putting
just finally having a good stretch of holes at the end of the front nine, before going back to square one for the back
My driver into the wind on the par 3 17th that finished within 3m of the hole (after hitting my first T-shot OOB with the 3 wood
My spanking of the Cleveland Hi-Bore
Briswesty spying on me before next week, and trying to scare me with his drives down the middle while he was there

Lock it down if you want Dean, but the tees we play the champs off is an important discussion. It's a pity we can't play the course twice to try the middle and back tees to be fair to all.

Most likely Black and stableford, I would say, but I'm sure there will be a poll.

If we are of the black most defently make it single stab, and for having two rounds once is enough, nice course but would like to play Bribie Island GC as well

Bribie might be good for our egos after getting smashed around PH ;)

For the hackers on the board:
-If you hit in the water don't go looking for it-the water is tannin stained and black-because you won't find it.
-If you can't keep it straight wear long pants. The grass or grasslike plants in the gardens cut up your legs.
-Most of the gardens are lateral water hazards but in a lot of them if you find your ball you can hit it out.
-In the gardens which don't have hazard stakes you get a one club length preferred lie so it is worth finding your ball-once again remember the long pants.
-The course is short on shade so wear plenty of sunscreen.
-If you like sitting down once in a while, forget it, no benches-get a cart or take a buggy with a seat.
-Take lots of water/drinks with you because there is not many taps on the way around-there are only two-one well placed on the front nine-one woefully placed on the back nine. Having said the the food and drinks cart does come around often and the young ladies operating it were reasonable to look at-although why you need two to man one cart is beyond me.

It was great to play with AndyP, AndyLo and Jaster. Leon sells himself short he was doing a top job on a tough day- I wish I could hit half as well as him, in fact I wish I could just plain hit it.

I am staying out of the golds/blacks thing cause I can't even make it off the golds.

AndyP was a great playing partner but he needs a Hibore to make him better:mrgreen: . He was wonderfully tolerant of my lack of playing ability.

AndyLo needs to teach me the skipping the ball across the water trick-that was fantastic. I hope the job interview went well.

All in all a great day on a nice course.

Damn... another unfinished game... hated it.... :(

Thanks for my playing partner jaster AP and just and I have learnt some course management stuff from jaster.

It was a disaster to drive to there, got out at 6:30 and hoping will be there just around quater to 8 or some sort but ended up like 10 mins late and spend most of the time winding in Bribie island finding my way.....

The new swing seems working for while after warmed up and had a pretty good putt from 7th/8th (I forget) to get my par :)

Have to stop at 16th because I got a job interview at 3pm (touch wood everythings goes well so far... they are even asking for referees from me) I kinda lost concentration after 12/13 holes and keep thinking about the time and interview. The playing pace is awesome just it will take a while to drive back Brissy so its kind of inconvinent. (I am not the one who get to choice the interview time... sigh)

Its a great course and I plan to attack it again sometime soon after I master my new swing :)

are people over estimating the difficulty of the course, perhaps because they've only been once?

there are ample bailout areas on the more difficult holes, just like any other course.

It's not anywhere near as hard as Brooky or North Lakes and for some it would be easier than Cooly River course which I personally find very narrow!

I actually expect to shoot a better score around PH than I do around Bribie - but everyone is different.

I don't beleive we are: -

Blind Tee shots and/or undulating landing areas on most holes
190m Approaches to several Par 4s if the wind is up and you aren't nutting your driver.
Several hit it the right length/direction or reload par 3s
Water water nearly everywhere
Greens that have more undulations than most "regular" courses
If we get unlucky...the wind!
I could list a few more if I thought about it probably.

There is no way this is like a Nudgee/Windaroo or similar, it's ACR is 74 for a start.

Plus this is not a course most of us will/can afford to play more than once or twice before the champs. Sure if it was your home course and you could play it everyday you would learn the nuances but the fact is we'll all struggle unless we are 250m in the middle of the fairway all day...it's really as simple as that. Sure some of the lower markers like yourself won't be as intimidated as the 15+ markers but if anyone breaks 80 off the black then they played a fantastic game.

if nothing else, I'm glad jaster/andyP/andylo and others have now had the chance to play it and contribute to the discussion. We're never gonna find a venue that everyone is happy with! Me personally, i'd prefer a longish and open course like PH than somewhere frustratingly short and tight like CTH River... Put driver back in the hands of the players I say!!

I hope you realise I was joking about the lockdown bris. I'd never do that to ya :)

I just want to say that I actually don't care where we play. Play it at chinchilla for all I care. I just want to get out and meet ya's all. I don't get to do it enough. The only reason I'm for the 2 courses is that it was decided on in the first place. Had it been the other way I'd have support it too. Personally I was just against the chopping and changing. And still am. Next year is another story with where it's held.

And don't forget, while I run the site (ok, andyp runs the site) in essence I have nothing to do with the champs, the poty, the vardan etc etc. You guys are doing that all yourselves. And a good job is being done.

Now lets go play some golf.

i'd rate PH a lot tougher around the greens than North Lakes. North Lakes just has a "dead" side on every hole. Gets a bit tedious after awhile.

I tend to agree with you .

The first time around is the first time you have been on the course and you don't know where to hit your ball except not into the hazards, not having a yardage book didn't help as it was hard to work out where you were on the course eg how far away is all the trouble of the tees, how far are the bunkers away on the second shot of a par 5 .

So the more you play it the easier it will get , the first time I played Brookwater/North Lakes I was in owe of the course but the 2nd and 3rd round you get to know where to put your ball and where all the trouble is.

Can't wait to get up there for the champs.
It is funny but I seem to actually play better at the courses that I think or am told are tough. I think I actually play to my handicap, ie. not play the course as if I am a low marker but as a B/C grader. Hopefully I will play it like that when I get up there.

Just looking for his ball......again, while Westy supervises (and I take a photo). Very helpful!

I think this is the 8th. The green looks relatively friendly from here. It's not. The pin is at the bottom of a tier at the back. Both jaster and I had to negotiate it.

Westy's shirt must have come out from all the running he did that morning.

When he left us, it was at about the furtherest point from the clubhouse you could get. Last I saw of him, he was jogging across the empty blocks back towards the car park.
I'm glad tomorrow won't be a test of fitness.

A few home truths
Supervising? Can't half tell BW is a public servant!
If someone can invent a shirt that stayed tucked in (like they did with those computer socks that stay up), they'd make a killing out of me!
PS. I only ran till I was out of sight, then hobbled the rest of the way because my knee was killing me. It's all about appearances.
