On the article they state a penalty stroke must be added.

My understanding is that it would need to be marked and replaced, and if it fell into the hole after being replaced, the last shot would count as having the ball holed without penalty.

Would love to hear the opinions of some of the rules nutters here.

If the ball was against the flag stick would he not be allowed to move the flagstick and allow the ball to drop in . If it isn’t on the flag and is deemed at rest where would he put his marker if the ball isn’t touching the lip . Assuming it is ,would the rule change where you don’t replace the ball if it moves on it’s own accord and play it where it lies which would be in the hole , come into play

I don't know the ruling, but I'd be taking that twig home and setting fire to it after the round. :)

Pick it up, remove the twig, drop the ball in the hole, penalty, no stroke

Pretty sure its like the wait for long enough it will fall in thing. If it does after the 10 seconds, no stroke and 1 penalty. So same as if you tapped in.

When you guys are saying penalty, no stroke, using the example as if it was after a tee shot on a par 3, it would be considered a birdie for the hole?

Correct

Decision 16-2/0.5
Under Rule 16-2, if a ball falls into the hole after it is deemed to be at rest, the player is deemed to have holed out with his last stroke and he shall add a penalty stroke to his score for the hole. In this case, when the player marked the position of the ball it must have been at rest. The ball must be considered to have been at rest when it was replaced; otherwise, it would have to be replaced again (Rule 20-3d).

Accordingly, the player is deemed to have holed out with his last stroke and must add a penalty stroke to his score for the hole.

Apparently the R and A say it’s a hole in one
