Hey all first time post here so if I have messed up let me know.

I am a weekend hacker, and by hacker I mean I don't even score. I currently use a Bridgestone JGR driver with 12 deg loft and regular flex shaft. My previous driver I was using was a taylormade SLDR 9.5deg loft with stiff shaft. My issue is with the TM i was driving 220 odd however i had a wicked slice. With the JGR the slice is relatively gone, but I am only getting about 180 distance. If i change to a stiffer shaft would that help, or would it help to change the loft to a 9 or 10 degree? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I went through a similar exercise recently...
I had an M1 that would be near impossible to hit straight for me.. Always a big slice

A few things fixed my issues... Not just 1.
- changed from stiff to regular shafts because I don't swing fast enough for stiff.
- less body weight transfer from right to left to stop me from hitting top down
- ball tee positioning. More forward to the left foot/heel
- shorter shaft for better consistency with ball contact

Now I can hit with better control than before and occasional hook if my right hand grips too hard and roll my arms

Okitoki what was your swing speed? Mine hovers about 100 to 105. Also how do you know what length to cut down the shaft? Does it depend on my height or driver length?

I am the epitomy of a hacker and I found playing driver at 44" provided a far better feel for the head (no homo) than std length which ranges from 45-46"

I've only got a piddly 90mph swing and jump between stiff and reg quite often. Most of the drives are usually straight but cut the nipples off when trying to hit it too hard.
Haven't measured my drives much but they would be between 180 and 200m.
Better off playing off the fairway a little further back than breaking your clubs and wrists on tree roots.

My swing speed was around the mid 90s depending on my day.
I'm playing 44" for a 5 foot 8 height... But figured that out by chocking down on my grip and figuring out where is my sweet spot resulting in the most consistent strike zone using those stickers thing that shows the strike marks

Cut half an inch off and hit it. If it's no good cut another half off. Rinse and repeat.

Slice could come from a multitude of things like incorrect setup, swing plane, takeaway, grip etc etc etc. You can work with what you have and keep compensating for the faults, but it'll lead to a lot of inconsistency and loss of distance. If you want to give it a go on your own, there's some good video tutorials on YouTube from "meandmygolf", Rick Shiels and Mark Crossfield (his older videos were much better in my opinion). The driver is what I deem a specialist shot. The way you setup, angle of attack, spine angle, release the clubhead are all quite different from an iron shot.

If your swing speed is where you say it is, I think you are probably better off in a stiff shaft. If you were 90-95 I'd say reg shaft but it's not just all about your SS. You probably do need to look at your technique somewhat but I agree with okitoki, one of the best things I did was start using a shorter driver shaft. I now play my driver between 44.75" and 45" as opposed to 45.5 to 46" and I'm hitting it further and straighter than ever.

Id look at setup, my wife has a wicked slice.....or did, standing behind her, talk to her through setup and alignment and now she hits em dead straight.......and dont try to hit them hard

I choke down on driver as well and probably play at 44” max and drive the ball much better,
Was told once that you need swing speed of 100 mph to use stiff shaft , I would go the set up & lessons route before fiddling clubs and shafts

Use the flexiest shaft you can control. I struggle with control with driver so I use an x-flex driver shaft despite my driver ss being only 100-103mph.
