View Full Version : My 'away from golf' project

Just thought i would all let you in on why i might not be around here as much, and not playing competition golf.
I have bought a guitar which i am doing up, a charvel neck through model 6, made in japan in 1989. At the moment it has half the paint on it and i have taken off all the hardware.
Tomorrow i am stripping the rest of the paint, and going to sand it for a few weeks before i organise to have it painted.
I will update this thread as the project goes along, with pictures and designs and will be in and out of the forum most likely selling some extra golf gear i have, and to see how everyone is playing.
So if your really good with woodworking, painting or soldering electronics, let me know any helpful hints etc.
Good golfing to you all!

Hmmm, maybe, but im thinking more about a OFR trem with a SD- SD1 with 10-46's and custom paint, better than a 72 at new brighton!

Be sure to manually sand the guitar. Do not make the same mistake as I, when I used an electric sander to try and speed up the process. Otherwise, you will be left with a guitar body that has more undulation than a St Andrews fairway.

If you do a really good job with the sanding (which, in my opinion, is the most rewarding part), you may even be tempted to leave it as a wood grain finish. However, this will also depend on the type of wood the guitar body is made out of.

If you attempt to do the wiring yourself, learn how to solder correctly, and always consult the pickup schematics. I use to be a member of a website that had schematics for any pickup setup you could imagine, they also had 1:1 scaled CAD diagrams, which are handy for doing custom artwork and/or drilling. I will try and follow that up.

Thanks ducky, the guy before me did the power sander option i think, but the body seems to be ok, ill be hand sanding the rest.
As for the electronics, im leaving that to the guys who know what they are doing, and for a good price im picking up all the hardware i need.
I think in 3 months i'll be playing it, but i hope sooner, depends how fancy i go with paint and the like, but i can set it up basic first the fiddle around later.
I'll put pics up after tomorrows effort.

That came out great!

Is your friend a car restorer (or something else that involves painting)?

Make sure you polish up those frets, and it will be looking really slick.

He owns a spray paint shop that will paint anything you want, just need to be careful with it now, pickups are becoming a pain in the ass, but ill get there soon enough!!!
A fret dress and a install of all my stuff and ill be a happy (but poor) guy.

Well its done, and plays so well! i am in love with it!
It took alot longer than i thought it would, alot more time and effort, but for the money, this is the best axe ever!
More pics to come, and some sound samples, this thing plays itself, so quick!
Enjoy!!! As a substitute for golf, im glad ive picked this project!

Matt 3 Jab
23rd August 2006, 06:38 PM
yea, it sat at one store for 2 weeks doing nothing, and i was told "it'll be ready tomoz, it'll be ready tomoz" never touched!!!

That turned out really cool. I was a little worried when you first told me you were going to do a guitar 'project', but the results speak for themselves. What pickups did you decide on (I can't read the writing)? Back in the day DiMarzio use to make great pickups, I'm not sure if this is still the case.

Matt 3 Jab

I have a dimarzio evolution in the bridge, the other pickups are just dummy's, dont work, havn't decided what to use but a fender lace sensor in the neck would be cool.
